Democrat Peggy Lamm continues to have a hard time anticipating, and responding to, obvious attacks on her campaign. Last night Channel 7 opened their 10:00 p.m. newscast with a story about how Lamm may have committed voter fraud by voting in Jefferson County last November while potentially not completely eligible to do so.
Our first instinct was to say, “Give us a break — who cares?” but as the story unfolded, it became clear that Lamm walked right into this one and then wasn’t prepared to answer the questions when they came. This doesn’t excuse the fact that Channel 7 opened their newscast with this “investigation,” pumping it up as though they figured out who had shot JFK when all they did was help out another campaign that had clearly leaked it to them. Nevertheless, Lamm’s campaign deserves criticism for screwing this up.
The essence of the story is that Lamm has a house in Superior and rented an apartment in Arvada, so that she could say she lives in CD-7 and try to avoid the carpetbagger issue. Since she lists her primary residence in Arvada, she voted in Jefferson County in November — again, obviously to try to avoid the carpetbagger issue. But apparently she didn’t do all the necessary paperwork, like changing her car registration to her Arvada residence. The error is especially bad because Lamm renewed her car registration after she changed addresses to the Arvada residence.
This seems like a minor thing, but Lamm should have taken care of it — or somebody advising her should have told her — because you had to know it would come up eventually. Now the Jefferson County District Attorney is investigating whether Lamm committed voter fraud, and to make things worse, she agreed to a sit-down interview with reporter John Ferrugia in which she basically admitted that she didn’t really live in Arvada (she claimed to live there at least some of the time, but anybody watching the story could read between the lines). Then, Ferrugia hinted that a Jefferson County investigator has been to her Arvada residence and noted that it was basically just a campaign office.
Is this a huge story? No, it isn’t — but it should NEVER have happened. This was completely preventable, and even after the fact, Lamm made it worse by screwing up the interview; she did the same thing last year when it was revealed that she once endorsed Republican Bill Owens for governor, making the story much worse (and extending the media coverage for days) because of her bumbling response.
If Lamm is going to be a viable candidate in CD-7, at some point she’ll need to stop tripping over her own feet. With all of the money she is paying out to staff and consultants (Lamm has spent about as much money as she has on-hand, which is not the case with opponents Ed Perlmutter and Rick O’Donnell), you’d think somebody would be helping her out with this stuff…or at least willing to fall on their sword once in awhile.

What’s yp witht hese democrats–first peggy lamm, now Chris Romer–don’t they get iT??
I agree that, minor as this might end up being, the interview made her appear fairly clueless. Viable candidates just don’t say things like “I appreciate when people try to follow the law.” She should have been prepared for the interview and the campaign should have done something to head this off. As of right now her website STILL tells us how she feels about drilling in Alaska. This is campaign/image management? Might be time for some new advice in the Lamm campaign.
Losing campaigns always whine about dirty politics when they mess up the response. If you can’t play the game, you shouldn’t step on the field.
Tim,
Excellent assessment. Fits for Paul Hackett’s announcement today also…

Your candidate is being investigated and you say the real story is who told the media? Way to go, Karl Rove.
I suppose you feel the NYT should be investigated for reporting the wiretaps, Valerie Plame should have been compromized because her husband told the truth about Niger yellowcake, and Abu Gharaib would have been fine if nobody had taken pictures.
Republicans blame the whistleblower. Lets take responsibility and let the chips fall where they may.
As a citizen of Jefferson County and a party activist, I was shocked and dissappointed by Peggy Lamm?s and the Colorado pols flippant attitude regarding voter fraud. What is the definition of fraud? The American Heritage Dictionary defines fraud as 1. ?a deception deliberately practiced in order to secure unfair or unlawful gain?. And 2) ? a CHEAT.? The question posed by 7 News was ?did she [Lamm] vote illegally in Jefferson County?? Lamm responds??I think it?s important if possible to vote in the county where you?re trying to represent.? Later, she implies she doesn?t know where she lives. Isn?t she deliberately attempting to deceive the voters by saying she is one of them in Jefferson county by ?living? and voting there, only after having set up a sham ?residence? there. I know where I live. Do I want a congresswoman who can?t even be honest about the most basic questions?
Lying and cheating in this Republican ruled nation has got to change. Ms. Lamm discusses her son, what kind of example is she setting for him? Unfortunately, Ms. Lamm is a fraud, by her own response both verbally and on television (see thedenverchannel.com/video/703937/1) and the Denver Post article today.
She shows us that she would be another ?politics as usual scofflaw? who considers herself above the law. She fails to follow not only the letter of the law but also the spirit of the law.
Voter fraud is a felony and Jefferson County. Since Ms. Lamm can?t remember where she lives, the county D.A. should subpoena her staff and others who are familiar with her Jefferson county campaign office/ home to determine for her and the voters of Jefferson County where she really lives. If, in fact, Ms. Lamm does not live there and really lives in Boulder, the D.A. should prosecute her to the fullest extent of the law.
Once again, ColoradoPols unabashedly shows how pro-Dem it is. Had this been a story about a Republican, Pols would have been demanding an answer and full-scale investigation.
What? We’ve never “called on” anybody — or demanded an explanation or investigation — for anything. That’s not what we do here. We talk politics and give our opinion on how a particular story may affect the current slate of races. We’ve never “demanded an explanation” from any candidate or campaign…for anything.
How is that someone can be referred to as “not completely eligible” ?
Is that like being “almost pregnant”? Or perhaps “not completely dead”?
Way to spin, COPols, way to spin.
…”almost allways”
As in, “I almost allways go the speed limit officer. Please let me off with a warning.”
See how far that gets ya…
Well, she was eligible enough that someone allowed her to cast a ballot, but she hadn’t made every change. Therefore, she was “not completely” eligible. That’s all we meant by that.
Oh please, isn’t this the state where you can vote if you walk in with a Utility Bill?
The real question is: How many times did she vote for George Bush in 2004?

?I watched the 10:00 pm news on KMGH Channel 7 with great alarm last night,? said Danielle Radovich Piper, Ed Perlmutter?s campaign manager.

So a Perlmutter shill is shocked, shocked that gambling is going on this establishment. Before someone says “Your winnings, Madam,” shouldn’t she have demanded that the usual suspects be rounded up?
Remember, Democrats, issues mean nothing. Seat time is what counts! Vote for whoever has lived in the district longest. And remember that rule in November, when you face lifelong resident Rick O’Donnell!

True enough, but there is sure a lot of “half-massed” text posted on this board including, in all fairness, many of my own 😉

AP picked up the story
So why is dear Peggy still pulling 6-1 on The Line?
Is The Line broken? I think it is for Peggy.
“I live both places. And I have said that all along. I’m a single mom, and I’m trying really hard to do a good job raising my son,” she said.
……………
The amazing “in 2 places at once” woman!
What’s this “single mom” crap? That alone should disqualify her. Women who rely on that martyrdom should aren’t fit for office, says this “single dad.”
And the best thing she could do for her son is have a dad around.
Ironically, it’s liberals like her whom have contributed to the breakdown of the nuclear family and helped cause a lot of kids not to have two parents, and especially caused a lot of dads to be driven away from their families.
Try getting a restraining order because your wife beat on you, or try getting custody even if your ex is out of her mind. Rarely happens.
Iron Mike,
She didn’t walk in and vote. In a painfully self-defeating gesture, she mailed her vote in from somewhere.
You do raise an excellent point. Does she have a utility bill from the 7th district? When your campaign HQ is your ‘apartment’ do you pay for the lights or does your PAC pay?
I think that residency rules and disclosure laws might put her into a possibly embarrassing double bind. I am sure there are ways to do the accounting properly, but what are the odds that she navigated that mine field when she didn’t bother to change her Driver’s License?
How nice to have two places to live and not remember which one is your principle domicile or how often you sleep in each one at night. I don’t know about you folks but I am struggling to just keep one little place, pay for health care..such as it is, high gas prices, grocery store increases, property taxes, house insurance all on a fixed income. Saw my retirement go to the PBGC. Not sure how that is going to play out. To old to have had much of a 401K. I am not complaining it is pretty much of what a lot of Americans are facing today. This is my first time posting something. Makes me feel like I have a say. So here goes. Mrs. Lamm I saw you on TV last night. I am going to give you some good old sage advice take it or leave it. You looked embarassed and you should have because you have embarassed the Democratic party at a time when we need hope for our future. Here we are working hard to prevent voter Fraud and here you are propelling us ten steps backwards. Sarcastic as this may sound but I have to say it How nice to have other people paying for your two homes all the while you are telling people how hard they have it. Mrs. Lamm you need to go raise your son and don’t try to give us any more help. Your kind of help we do not need.
Thank you to my grandaughter who taught me how to post.

As a grandfather myself, I’m always glad to see some of the voices of experience being heard. Here’s to you, Gram!
Sorry guys, but your whitewash won’t fly. The fact that she doesn’t live in the district is a big issue, not just with Democratic voters but with voters in general, and this story just emphasizes it all the more. She is from Boulder. Never lived in the District and has no connection to its voters. She is an opportunist plain and simple and people recoginze it.
FYI to the guy who loves that simpering wimp of a Republican candidate who has never held a real job in his whole life, Perlmutter is a life-long resident of the district too. Just read every press release he puts out.
Has anyone ever scrutinized Both Ways Bob Beauprez’paperwork to see if it was all legal and valid after he moved from his Lafayette estate to a dinky duplex in Arvada, in order to avoid the carpebagger label?

Yes, the same person who scrutinized Peggy Lamm’s paperwork also did the same for Bob Beauprez on behalf of Mike Feeley

Perlmutter is a lawyer who runs interference for Wal-Mart … and you call that a “real job”?????
Just a horny handed son of the soil pulling down $300 a hour from developers for rolling over citizens, huh? No wonder shills like Chris are so afraid of Peggy Lamm — she has had “real jobs” and raised a family too.
Don’t know about his paperwork, but I know for a fact that Rep. Beauprez doesn’t split time between his Lafayette house and Arvada, because he has rented out his Lafayette house. Oh, and to call it an estate is a bit much. Very nice home, yes, but an estate calls to mind acres and acres with outbuildings…
Wildly obvious when Lamm’s people get on here and try to spin the issue around on her opposition. If her campaign’s idea of damage control is to get on a blog and try to spin things back around on Perlmutter then her race really is as done as this story indicates. I don’t see a lot of citizens of the district getting on here to stick up for her. Why? They see what’s going on and they don’t like it.
Of course, IF Peggy Lamm is held accountable for her fraud and IF she cannot paint herself a victim, courtesy of ColoradoPols, she will sue to get away with committing a crime. Like a good Democrat.
