Santorum Pulls Out, Cleanup Begins

Politico:

Word of Santorum’s plans to pull out leaked out in the minutes ahead of his formal announcement. One source supportive of Santorum told POLITICO the former senator is expected to address some of his top backers directly in a 3:15 p.m. conference call. A source familiar with the call said Santorum reached out to RNC chairman Reince Priebus and told him ahead of the press event that he would be suspending his effort.

Now that Santorum is finished as a candidate, Romney may now turn his attention to the general-election fight with President Barack Obama and the task of uniting a fractured Republican coalition.

We haven’t heard yet if spoiler Newt Gingrich plans to stay in the race now that Rick Santorum is out, but we can’t really see why he would. As they say, “mission accomplished.”

As Juan Antonio Samaranch said of every Olympics, this was the greatest primary ever.

  1. Rick Santorum, with this decision, has affirmed his status as a leader of the conservative wing of the GOP. He has helped the party in the quest for the White House this year, and left the door open for his next attempt. History dictates that the runner-up in the GOP nomination often gets it later.

This is a great day for Republicans in our fight against Obama, so naturally I expect typical Pols readers to ignore the news completely.

    1. “This is a great day for Republicans in our fight against Obama, so naturally I expect typical Pols readers to ignore the news completely”

…which is why there are comments all over this blog today about said subject….

    2. The GOP runner-up gets the subsequent nomination when the candidate that gets the nomination loses the general.  Reagan, who finished second in 76, got the nomination in 80 because Ford lost.  Dole, who was second in 88, got the nomination in 92 because Pappy Bush lost. Ronmey, who came in second in 2008 gets the nomination in 12 because McCain lost.  The only way Santorum has a chance to ever be the Republican nominee is if Romney loses. Even then, he will have to beat a much stronger batch of candidates next time when there will be no incumbent.

    3. “Rick Santorum’s campaign for President was the political equivalent of drunk sex that goes on to the point of chafing in spite of the fact that neither party is capable of orgasm.”

Wasn’t it like 3-4 weeks ago when the math was that Frothy needed to win 70% of the remaining delegates to get the nom?  Yeah that’s doable — just 70% in New York and 70% in CA, and 70% in PA … seems like finally the Pope had an epiphany and figured out he’s a LOSER.

He was just a Ditka mustache and a shaggy haircut away from being Ned Flanders. With some cats eye reading glasses and a pillbox hat he coulda been the Church Lady.

AGOP must really have faith if he’s gonna hold out for Frothy 2016.

    4. This is a great day for Republicans in our fight against Obama…

You are against Obama… and not for the policies that help working and middle income families. “Anyone but Obama” won’t win this election for you — especially as the economy continues to grow and unemployment continues to go down.

      1. The hatred of Barack Obama has led the neo-cons to the brink of disaster.

He is trying to save this nation.

They are trying to keep him from doing it.

The American people are wising up to that dynamic, and the republicans and their plastic candidate are about to suffer one of the most crushing defeats in modern history.

You can almost smell the sweat…  🙂

        Impeach John Roberts!

  2. He was the boat anchor to Santorum pulling Santorum down so he could never compete with Romney.  No Santorum no need for Gingrich to be the dirty spoiler for Santorum.  I bet Gingrich bows out sooner than later.  He work is done.

  4. We know he was the better candidate. He let us know even Jesus Alou was no match for him. In fact I heard rumor that more than one god asked him for advice.

He should have stayed in. This quitting thing is going to hurt his election chances. We can hope for a brokered deal though, can’t we?

Maybe he will campaign for Gingrich or Paul?
