      1. No, CHB.  The Sinking of the Reuben James is Woody Guthrie.  Duke is citing Kenny Rogers.

Kingston Trio, however, did do a cover of the Guthrie anti-fascist classic.

        1. Correct.

          The two are unrelated, AFAIK.

The song was written by Alex Harvey and Barry Etris about a poor black farmer. Don't know how they came up with the name.

            1. Well…me, too. The K.Rogers one. I don't know the Woodie Guthrie tune. I will look it up.

I used to perform,  with the Troy Douglas Band, a Woody Guthrie classic called "Refugee". It's a great song.

      1. Anyone know how to prove Rep. Bimboebert fits into the terms?  Pretty clear she took the oath on January 3 and was allowed to be a member of Congress. So, how does someone go about showing she "shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same, or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof."?

  1. Josh Marshall’s good take on “The Elon Musk Razzmatazz

This whole move to faux-civic-ize the platforms is wrongheaded. They’re not the public square. The actual digital public square is the open Internet. Facebook is a private company that makes untold billions of dollars by selling ads against digitally manipulated “engagement.” Twitter is the same. They just manage not to make money. That’s why it’s never really about “free speech” because the whole thing is really about algorithms that make certain kinds of speech more visible than others and do it for profit. So Facebook makes money by doing that. That’s what it is. Twitter somehow manages not to make money by doing that. But same difference.

Anything that bloodies up the idea that these company spaces are the public square is thus a good thing. If Musk really is the Lex Luther comic book villain people make him out to be (and which he really may be) I’m ready to see him treat Twitter like his own maniacal toy because he bought it and therefore he can. That’s good because it will be more clear that Twitter is not the public square. It’s a company impersonating the public square that a nasty person can buy. If people flee to other sites or find ways to operate around his malevolence I’m ready for that. That’s why my reaction to this is just as much “let it burn” as “oh no.” Probably a bit more so.

I don’t think it’s good at all that Musk has purchased Twitter. But the real threats to civic life aren’t content moderation. It’s private companies impersonating the public square in our civic life. Things that break down that deception are not a bad thing.

        1. I've never tweeted, either. However, Twitter is an essential tool for journalists in keeping up with events. I follow several twitter users on the Ukrainian conflict, and that is the only way to follow things. You do have to curate to who is knowledgable and who is smoking crack. Having responses to your BS is helpful.

          1. I initially thought about Twitter like Maureen Dowd: "I would rather be tied up to stakes in the Kalahari Desert, have honey poured over me and red ants eat out my eyes than open a Twitter account."

But after a while, I found it almost essential if you want to follow fast-moving events, or find out what's trending early in the game. A lot of it is shallow, surface-level, even dumb, but done right you can find important stuff and dig deeper if need be. I will be bummed, though not terminally, if Elon screws it up.

    1. "Bless these heinous instruments of death..may they kill thousands of innocent Ukranian families and children in this totally unjustified, purely evil invasion designed to gratify the post-soviet expansionist fantasies of a dictatorial madman"

      Or something like that…
