We need more straight allies in the room when and testifying when Civil Unions goes for a vote in the house. You wouldn’t believe the people who show up to voice their extreme religious views. I have hundreds (thousands?) of friends or acquaintances who believe in civil unions or gay marriage, yet many were working yesterday. Please, join me to stand up for our friends in the lgbtq community from here, will you? I promise you it will be one of the most interesting (and important) things you’ll ever do.

Judge Vaughn Walker’s opinion in the California prop 9 case convinced me otherwise. I guess it’s a step in the right direction but it still leaves children raised by gay couples under a stigma. It’s time to just authorize gay marriage, repeal DOMA, and get on with more important things.
Like figuring out who Scott Gessler is, without goggling and without snickering too much.
At some point I realized that the only reason I was comfortable with civil unions but not gay marriage was that, for no particularly good reason other than not being used to the idea, the concept of gay marriage just had a certain ick factor for me and that an ick reaction was not a valid reason for opposition. Time goes by, things change, and at this point it’s hard to remember what that ick factor was about in the first place.

which undoubtedly you have all seen. GM posts a record profit today for their 2011 results. 7.6 billion of revenue on a little over 105 billion.
Think about how much security and livelihood that gives thousands of workers that were staring down the precipice not long ago. Think about the multiplier effect that has on the overall economy.
Think about where GM would be today without President Obama. Think of where GM would be today if Romney were elected president back then.

I had something positive to say today.
GW actually authorized the GM/Chrysler bailout to the tune of $17.4 billion. Obama kept it policy and made it happen but Shrub’s finance folks made the case and why not saddle Obama with even more debt & economic chaos.
if Bush was part of it, give the man credit where it is due. Saving US industry is money well spent.
GM announced today that they’ll be transitioning into a 401k plan for their salaried workers and ending their pensions.

with all of the ex-US West employees (like me) that they inherited when they acquired MediaOne/AT&T Broadband. My pension has gone up in smoke so that Brian Roberts can have a bigger bonus next year.

Look at as many as you can and don’t be discouraged. The world is your oyster right now as a buyer. Have fun with it. I ended up on the night before Halloween looking at a vacant house on almost an acre, built in the early 1920s and abandoned for years. I was by myself, in the dark, in wind and rain, with only my agent by phone (sick in bed with flu) for company. Half the lights didn’t work, and the basement featured a terrifying solid concrete hallway barely wide enough to walk through with about a 5’6″ ceiling, which was the only route to the “third bedroom.” Not exactly the house for me, but definitely my favorite experience of the whole process, besides of course finding mine…

I absolutely hated every moment of buying a house, and I’m dreading the fact that I may do it again soon. Then again, some people don’t like math, so who am I to judge?

1. Figure out which car you want.
2. Call every local dealer at 9:00am and tell them you are going to the dealer that offers you the lowest price at 5:00pm that day to purchase.
3. When they tell you that you have to come in to get an offer – tell them you’re hanging up in 30 seconds and do they want your phone number.
I once had one dealer refuse to give me a price. They hate it because they know you are getting the lowest possible price – but they’ll do it.

I’ve bought two cars this way – one turned out to be local and the other was in Texas, Even though the TX car cost $400 to retrieve (approx) – I still saved more than $6k from buying locally. And the local dealer still likes me.
No stress, no high pressure, no funny-money stuff.
I loved the process. It’s like a treasure hunt, and you get to see so many interesting things that give you the most intimate window into the lives of people you’ll never know anything else about. One I almost made an offer on had been abandoned hurriedly, with red candlewax still dripping from the windowsill in the living room. I imagine them as a sweet old hippie couple. Another house turned out actually to have been moved–the entire house–when I-70 was built, and its stucco exterior was daubed on to hide a crack caused by the move. Then there was the one where there were still a child’s drawings hung in the bedroom… that one was sad. There was one with a flowering bush in the backyard that was covered in hundreds of calm, friendly, sated honeybees.
I mostly looked at foreclosures, short sales, and other various sorts of vacant homes. The showings where people were still living there weren’t fun; I felt I was intruding.
Bidding on foreclosures? Ugh.
The housing search in Boulder is probably a lot different than in many other places. Prices never dropped here after the market crash, so house-hunting was just a stream of crappy condos completely trashed by their college-student tenants, or dinky rowhomes miles from anything yet still somehow crammed together like office cubicles. For half a million dollars.
before it gets completely Boulderized. We finally decided we didn’t want to pay $ 400 K for 100 sq. ft. with an unfinished basement, so we started looking elsewhere. Half the price, excellent schools and homes, and very nice town. Seriously. DASH is available to Bldr too.
$200K seemed kind of steep for a house the size of my bathroom. 🙂
Louisville is probably the only place I’d consider.
I chose to enjoy the learning experience. I didn’t do the auction thing — mostly the Homesteps program homes from Freddie Mac. Easier to avoid the depressing that way really, since most of those were pretty obviously unsuccessful “flips,” not somebody’s family home they lived in for 30 years then couldn’t keep. Of course I sympathize with unsuccessful investors, but not the way I do with families who lose the homes they live in.
(I don’t sympathize, on the other hand, with house flippers who add cosmetic upgrades specifically designed to camouflage major structural flaws and health hazards… saw plenty of those, too. I looked at almost 500 homes online and over 60 in person.)
If you’re going to end up with a place you hate that cost way too much, do the longer commute instead. Maybe somewhere that will eventually have light rail to Boulder?
Fantasyland is a great place to think about houses, but it’s tricky to get financing.
Anti-abortion “personhood” bill clears Oklahoma senate
Okie’s just might win the NutFlakes race. Seems the OK Senate approved their Personhood bill and now it’s up to their GOP-run House to approve and their GOP Gov to do nothing.
Yep siree, Okie embryos & fetuses are gonna git “all the rights privileges, and immunities” of other citizens (though they just might not be viable citizens yet). Ya know that stirs the loins of our homegrown nutflakes and gives them more reason to think 3rd times a charm come Nov — let’s see if we can better the spread once again.
They pass it, then outlaw birth control, and we then see what voters in a deep red state do when they face the consequences of that law.
And yes it sucks for the residents of Oklahoma. But they’re the ones that elected people to their legislature.

I’m not saying I want OK to pass this law. I’m saying if they do it’s going to be interesting to see if it lasts very long once the voters see the ramifications of it in action.

Snakes, every plant has stickers, wind all the time, softball games called on account of dust storms, 150 people and four churches including two different kinds of Baptist and one church whose members occasionally got into trouble for letting a kid die because they didn’t believe in doctors. Very nice neighborly people but I was the only woman in town over 18 who didn’t have a child yet. They all pretty much got pregnant and married, in that order, right out of High School at the latest. Our landlady was a 36 year old grandmother. I don’t know that they’ll notice any lack of birth control availability.

Will the frozen embryos in OK have legal representation? I mean if they are “people” is it really appropriate to keep them stored? Does OK have that whole life, liberty, poh, thing?
Could they be certified as a class and sue the storage facility? Could they sue the parents?
Could one become an emancipated minor? Could they own property? Could they inherit?
What if someone is conceived in OK – does that make them an OK citizen, even if their parents remove them to another state? What if they are removed from OK specifically to expel them? What if the parents had no idea they even existed? What if the parents are foreign nationals visiting OK who happen to create one. Does the zygote-person then become a US citizen by virtue of having come into existence in OK?
And on and on and on. We can all see that once upon a time, a zygote-person will end up being someone’s boss.

Mitt’s folks changed their RSVP to “too busy to attend” as he scrambles to save face & tamp down Frothy’s surge. It’s only like the 8th CNN debate and about the 20th thus far — so how much harm can come from skipping just one? But remember, optics are everything!
Does it still go on with just 3 of the stooges? Does this pull-out make Mitt look scared or hangs him with a foreshadowed scent of fail? If he loses on SuperTue does this cast a darker shadow? Frothy might now cancel so I guess without Mitt it’s just not a
