    1. Of all the things Biden does well, delivering stirring, soaring rhetoric is way, WAY down the list.

My caucus got over swiftly, so I heard Biden as I drove and when I got home, missing the first 15 minutes or so [I'll read the text later].  I wasn't surprised — he delivered lines that got applause, but only from one side of the room.

he'd be better off doing a series of fireside chats, 10-15 minutes once a week, sounding reasonable and focused on one issue and mentioning whatever else is going on briefly.

    1. First time with two women?  Sure … there has not been a female President of the Senate (eg, Vice President) before.  Nor has there been a female Senate President pro tem filling the seat of an absent VP.  In the other chair, "Nancy Pelosi is the 52nd Speaker of the House of Representatives, having made history in 2007 when she was elected."  [now also the 55th Speaker].

  1. I'm guessing that Louie Goehmert missed out on the SOTU address because he was busy in Texas losing his primary for attorney general.

    1. I think unifying appeals are going to be more persuasive than extremist rhetoric David in the upcoming election.  People want to come together and experience peace again.  It's an innate longing and people like Biden who advocate working together are going to have an effect on this upcoming election.  People who work together can achieve great things like the Webb space telescope.  Biden is no orator like Obama but he can deal with multiple things at the same time.  Having people in the chamber without masks really speaks volumes about the Biden Administration efforts to deal with the pandemic.  It shows results in a huge non-verbal way.  Biden talking about helping those vets affected by burn pits was a forceful moment.  Talking about the many casualties of war.

  2. Of course, the person giving the GOP response is corrupt and under investigation for misusing $450,000 in COVID funds. I only saw the SOTU and responses today, as I was caucusing, but the choice of Iowa Governor  Kim Reynolds to respond to the SOTU tells all we need to know about the moral compass of today’s  GOP.

    1. the  “other” response to the state of the union – Daily Best describes it as

Rashida Tlaib’s State of the Union Response to Biden Is a Gift to the GOP

Her remarks reprised the year-long arguments within the Democratic Party over the aspirations of the progressive agenda versus the inability to marshal the votes in the Senate. The congresswoman, a member of the leftist activist group in the House dubbed “the Squad,” didn’t name names— but she didn’t have to. Everyone knows who she means when she talks about “obstructionist Democrats” and “corporate-backed Democrats.”…

“They have the mistaken theory that standing up to Joe Biden is going to help them get what they want,” says Elaine Kamarck of the Brookings Institution. “All it does is alienate all the Democrats they need to make friends of. It’s a wing of the party that wants to act out their fantasy.”

      1. Tlaib should be sitting in the catbird's seat … but isn't.

When the reckoning comes in November and Gym Jordan is selected speaker in January, most of the moderates from swing districts will be gone leaving the Squad and Dems from solidly Democratic districts.

Ordinarily, that would mean that Tlaib and her cohorts would have a bigger platform but since she, Ilhan Omar, Maxine Waters, and Adam Schiff have all been targeted to be kicked off committees, they are going to lose some of their platform.
