“No man chooses evil because it is evil; he only mistakes it for happiness, the good he seeks.”

  1. Wollstonecraft was an optimist.

Hannah Arendt had a different view, elaborating on the “banality of evil.”

It is indeed my opinion now that evil is never “radical,” that it is only extreme, and that it possesses neither depth nor any demonic dimension. It can overgrow and lay waste the whole world precisely because it spreads like a fungus on the surface. It is “thought-defying,” as I said, because thought tries to reach some depth, to go to the roots, and the moment it concerns itself with evil, it is frustrated because there is nothing. That is its “banality.” Only the good has depth that can be radical.

Too often, evil emerges not because of some true pursuit of the good … but because people just accept an easy routine.  Describing Eichman, she wrote

What he said was always the same, expressed in the same words. The longer one listened to him, the more obvious it became that his inability to speak was closely connected with an inability to think, namely, to think from the standpoint of somebody else.

Sounds fairly prescient about the person we had as a *resident.

  2. Colorado's Doug Lamborn, the rigid ideologue who represents El Paso County, is now set to become the ranking minority member of the House Subcommittee on Strategic Forces, which has jurisdiction over nuclear weapons and space-based defense considerations.

Lamborn, first elected in 2006, takes over for Ohio's Mike Turner, who moved over to fill the spot on the House Intelligence Committee vacated by Trumper Devin Nunes. Nunes left to run the Orange Man's media company.

According to a quote provided to Roll Call and published Monday, Lamborn is focused on threats from Russia and China. Happily, the eight-term Republican from Colorado Springs used the word "triad" when discussing nuclear weapons, which may indicate he is not completely ignorant about armaments.

The Subcommittee on Strategic Forces, part of the Armed Services Committee, oversees "Department of Defense and Department of Energy policy related to strategic deterrence, strategic stability, nuclear weapons, strategic and nuclear arms control, nonproliferation, nuclear safety, missile defense, and space; Department of Defense programs and accounts related to nuclear weapons, strategic missiles, nuclear command and control systems, Department of Defense intelligence space, space systems and services of the military departments, and intermediate and long-range missile defense systems; and Department of Energy national security programs and accounts."

If the GOP wins control of the House this coming autumn, Lamborn will presumably become chair of the subcommittee.

        1. Union has rejected having a federal mediator. News coverage says the union is refusing to negotiate. Last night, 9News interviewed a 12 year King S. employee and 12 year union member. He said Kim Cordova wants a strike no matter what. 9News is not known as a hotbed of anti-union sentiment.

          1. two wrongs and a right, post hoc ergo propter somethingelse

            9News is anti union.
UFCW and Kim Cordova want what they want – and don't see the mediator route as the best way to get it at this time. No law or rule or even tradition says they have to accept mediation now.
So it is the union that is refusing to mediate – they remain willing to negotiate.
