In a federal lawsuit filed against the Obama administration, Colorado Christian University alleges that HHS recommndations requiring all new insurance policies to cover birth control compels the University to act against it’s religious beliefs by covering abortifacients. Which might be a compelling case if: 1) Obamacare didn’t explicitly prohibit federal requirements for insurance coverage for abortion and 2) the drugs that Colorado Christian University lists as abortifacients…um…aren’t.
CCU specifically identifies Plan B and ella, two brand names of emergency contraceptives, as abortifacients that would be covered by insurance under the HHS regulations. True, they would be covered contraceptives. False on their being abortifacients. The truth – at least for those who accept medical science and modern pharmacology as credible sources – is that both prevent pregnancy from occurring by inhibiting ovulation. Here’s the simple science:
1. Inhibit ovulation –> prevent release of egg
2. No egg = fertilization cannot happen
3. No fertilized egg means no embryo to implant in a uterus, ergo…
NO PREGNANCY
But don’t take my word for it. Ask Don Downing, a pharmacist from Washington who is an expert on the pharmacology of contraceptives and lectures internationally on the topic.
