I went looking for “good news” today, and came up with this April 2021 Harvard poll that shows:
Attitudes among young people (18-29) show that they are more politically engaged, approve of Biden’s job performance, (and they know he won the election), and most striking to me, most are hopeful about the future.
What a relief!
That is good news since they will turn out en masse and vote Democratic next year, tipping the Senate in favor of the Democratic Party, and saving the House.
Maybe the young will turn out … but the 2021 general elections did not show a tremendous surge of young voters in local and state elections. In fact, as Newsweek pointed out,
I wouldn't put too much stock in the turnout from just a couple of states' off-off-year elections. And the last couple of years have been such a hot mess generally, that a lot of people just let it fly right past them. I think next year will be a much better barometer of participation overall. Just the same, GOTV efforts matter more than ever to combat the right-wingers' cynicism.

And I am stuck in the airport because I wouldn’t enter the terminal where workers are striking for the simplest of reasons.
New pay structure that reflects that the workers have not seen any increase for five years and health insurance that never costs the worker more than 34% of a workers pay.
Company offered a variable increase where some workers get almost 12% increase spread over the next 4 years, in a 7 year contract – workers asked for 14% spread over the next 3 years. For health care, in a way that should anger so called “conservatives” everywhere, company offered Medicaid application forms.
There a thousand ways to get home to DC from Phoenix by Thursday. But this strike should be completely unnecessary.
That reminds me of stories I heard years ago about Walmart. They underpaid their employees and had the forms to apply for social assistance in the breakroom so the state could make up the difference. And some people wonder why I’d only be caught dead in one.
I don't know if they still have it, but there was a similar program at McDonalds named McServices. Pretty pathetic.
