The Strange Case of Mark G.

  • by: Aristotle

UPDATE: Made this more of a “diary” and less of a “comment.”

It seems Mark G. keeps saying things that get deleted by the administrators of Colorado Pols. I know of at least one instance where he used a certain anti-gay slur that begins with the letter F. Another comment, which was in response to something I said, is also gone, although I believe it was because someone upthread used that same slur in a mock-quote of Mark G.

As one commenter noted, once-prolific Polster Steve Harvey got banned in part for using the word “cracker.” Why isn’t Mark G. in the penalty box, Pols? If one contributes to one person’s permanent ouster, the other ought at least to contribute to another’s temporary banishment.

    1. but it was something about Ludwig von Mises being too busy hiring gays (and he didn’t use that word) to be credible. (It’s still in sxp’s sig line as of this moment.)

      1. had corrected MG about Mises. MG, in a bit of a huff, explained that the poor guy couldn’t get a job because others were forced to hire gays.

So the answer to raymond is that it was completely random. There wasn’t any real context, or discussion of anything like where that went.

  1. about this instead of emailing Pols or asking this in an open thread. Why not try one of the other options?

Sorry, but this is so not diary worthy, Ari and kind of strange, coming from you. What am I missing that you felt this deserved a one sentence diary post?

    1. I wanted visibility and discussion. Diaries generate that better than entries in the open thread.

Don’t worry, it’s not a portent of things to come.

    2. Also, I don’t believe there’s anything inherently not worthy of a diary. This doesn’t merit front paging – for that, there are (or should be) limits – but for diaries in general? I don’t think there should be. They stay on the right margin til they drop off, easy to ignore if they’re talking about something you’re not interested in.

      1. That’s not for you to decide.

        It’s up to Progressive Cowgirl.

        And Ralphie.

        And Not Michael Ellis.

BTW I agree with you.  Troll all you like, we’re free to ignore you (and should), but bigotry and group slurs should be punishable.  Calling someone a fucking idiot should not.

              1. Questions, inquiries, outings, banned users, et al–I usually hit them up privately.

If it’s pertinent information or replies to questions like Ari is seeking, he can always ask if he can reprint their answer here for all to see. I’d say by their lack of response thus far, this wasn’t the quickest way to get the answers he is seeking.

            1. THAT is something a private email wouldn’t accomplish.

Besides, I wasn’t calling for Mark G’s penalty per se. I wanted to see why he hadn’t been boxed – is there some gray area here? Do you have to do something in combination with other transgressions to get a temporary or permanent ban? All the regular polsters ought to be able to see why.

                1. Guess I’ll have to take that as a brain fart on the part of the govs.

So, let me ask flat out – why do you seem to have a problem with my approach? Or am I misreading your vibe?

    1. If a comment is so egregious that it warrants removal, it should warrant some kind of action (warning) or at least an explanation.

If a coment doesn’t warrant an action, then leave it in place for the whole community to at least see what kind of fucking idiot we’re dealing with.  (or, if MarkyG is soiling his pampers, no reason Alva should feel obligated to put him in a clean pair?)

  2. I also think many egregious personal attacks, and the rampant use of unnecessary profanity, occur here everyday. I will never understand why MOTR and Ralphie do not LIVE in the penalty box. I have pretty much come to the conclusion they must have some kind of special rank here at Pols. Nothing else makes sense.

    1. The reason you see “egregious personal attacks” is because you so often see words in comments that aren’t there, or give words meanings they do not have.

In short, I wouldn’t worry much about it.

Except what you just did. Well, don’t worry about that either. They probably won’t demand boxing. Looking forward to your six paragraph rebuttal…

      1. I don’t see any reason for the name calling –does it really add anything? I am used to blogging on Huffington Post and Daily Kos in addition to here. Kos is tame. Huffpo gives community monitors permission to delete personal attacks or very profane posts. I like that. Not trying to be the manners police, just saying a few people here go a little overboard with the name calling.

To each her own, I guess.

    2. that this was a site for adults, therefore adult language would be tolerated. If you feel that it’s rampant and unnecessary, well, that’s just how the cookie crumbles around here. And it’s not like other sites are free of it, either. Certain administrators of other sites are actually known not only to be profane, but to instigate egregious personal attacks themselves, which explains the light traffic they receive as well as the true echo chamber quality of their diaries.

My advise, if you’re feeling picked on, is to ignore it and let it go. If someone’s going to be a jerk, let them have the last word and move on. It’s only an internet forum, after all.

    3. For that matter, so are blogs.

I occasionally use “profanity” when it seems appropriate. I believe “profane” is a relative term.

I don’t know how much time you spend on other blogs, but the language here seems tame compared to some.

As for the egregious personal attacks. I think it is a mistake to take ANYTHING you read here personally. I have always enjoyed reading your stuff and agree with most things you say. I see no harm in the freedom we exercise in the way we express ourselves.

The occasional swearing and name calling are just part of the fun. I am truly understanding that you feel it inappropriate, but this is one rare instance where I respectfully disagree.

      LYJTS   🙂

      1. Agreed — profanity should not be a big deal. I personally don’t get the point of the name calling, but you are right — each of us makes a choice to log on.

Changing the subject now — glad we can all agree anti-gay slurs are unacceptable!

  3. this certainly generated a lot of responses.  Was just taking a look at the available ones since there seems to be a shortage of anything much new today while some recent front paged diaries are just  sitting there with few comments. It would be my suggestion that diaries that attract a lot of attention have kind of proved they deserve front page consideration. Not that anybody asked, of course.

    1. … I’d rather that front page diaries be restricted to ones actually dealing in politics. It’s why I asked that this one not be promoted. I’d had other silly ones (like polls about the relative merits of beej’s ideas and arguments) that were promoted by elected FPE’s, which I found a bit embarrassing. If anything of mine gets promoted, I’d rather that they were my more serious and thought-out posts.

I’d probably be okay if this one had been promoted, since it was about another topic concerning everyone (namely the fairness of the penalties doled out by the govs – this was prompted by Mark G. not being boxed when someone using a much milder epithet was booted (albeit in conjunction with “outing,” something I still disagree had happened in that case).

I think the lack of comments on the Pols-authored diaries may reflect either lack of interest or, as this becomes a more and more liberal blog in terms of participation, a lack of disagreement. Discussion is more lively when people have different opinions. Granted, quality conservative comments have been as rare as black diamonds for a long time here, and the trolls only inspire so much reaction before it becomes tiresome…

      1. This is a housekeeping matter; probably most Pols visitors don’t actually comment or even read long comment threads. Housekeeping doesn’t belong on the front page no matter how interested the people who do comment are on it.

You turned on a light to show there was a roach in the corner, Pols put it in the roach motel, all is well.

        1. on one of our dull days with little new or stirring much interest on the front page, would it be such a bad idea to put something that is clearly generating a lot of interest up there regardless? Just asking.

          1. They also have a rule about timing – they don’t want a bunch of old stuff at the top. And, OTOH, they did promote beej’s religion diary that one time, but it did get hundreds of responses, so maybe there’s something to it.
