From MSNBC:
President Barack Obama on Friday declared an end to the Iraq war, one of the longest and most divisive conflicts in U.S. history, announcing that all U.S. troops would be withdrawn from the country by year’s end.
“As promised the rest of our troops in Iraq will come home by the end of the year. After nearly nine years, America’s war in Iraq will be over,” Obama said.
“Today I can say that troops in Iraq will be home for the holidays.”

Many families will have a happier holiday this year with a loved one home from Iraq to share it with them.
Next order of business: Making sure they’re not all returning to find orders to prepare for deployment in Afghanistan in their mailboxes.
Next order of business after that: Integrating these young veterans into civilian society and supporting their recovery from their physical and/or emotional injuries sustained during deployment. We cannot abandon another generation of veterans simply because austerity and “no new taxes” are the GOTP’s current talking points.
Finally, the end. How bittersweet. Terribly, terribly bitter–wonderfully, wonderfully sweet.
It was one of those lump in the throat moments watching the President’s speak. I had two grandchildren serve in Iraq on more than one tour (one was in Afghan as well). I’m in one of the families that had the good fortune to have our children come home to us but so many of their friends families were not. God Bless those families. I’m sure they ask themselves everyday – Why were we there to begin with?
On the one hand, I’m glad we’re getting our troops out: W’s excellent adventure, which Obama has responsibly wound down, was a first-order disaster from start to finish….a terrible blunder in American foreign policy.
On the other, having spent two years of my life in civilian service there, and possibly more to come next year – and given the enormous sunk cost already incurred in America’s blood, treasure and international reputation – I’d hate to see Iraq spin apart centrifugally if a continued presence of 10,000 – 15,000 American troops could make the difference.
Time will tell about that, but yes GL, this is indeed a bittersweet announcement……
to the best of their ability when called upon by their country, whether in military or civilian capacities, but it was a completely unnecessary war, the most wasteful, the most damaging to our long term interests in empowering Iran for no good reason, and a tragic human and economic disaster from which we may never recover in the foreseeable future, ending and blighting thousands of young American lives and destroying the prosperity of our middle class. Once again, all for no good reason and for nothing that could not have been accomplished without the horrendous waste. One war down. One to go.
That’s the part that just makes me want to scream–and get into a pissing match with a skunk, or something else just as hopeless. America didn’t have to send her children there. What a tragedy.
When is ever going to figure out that he can say whatever he wants when he’s campaigning but no one expects him to really do it?
Seriously – if Congress would just help, he almost wouldn’t need a 2nd term.
to know what the international risks are and act in the best interests of this nation.
for fuck sakes its over so bring them home. If Iraq can’t stand by itself now it never will. Did we all forget we invaded Iraq based on a complete lie in the first place ?
