  1. Steinem offers wisdom for our time. Generations can and should learn from each other.

To delve deeply into what teaching and learning about race in America actually looks like in elementary through college classrooms, check out the documentary “Civil War – Who do we think we are?“, directed by Rachel Boynton, produced by Brad Pitt , Henry L Gates, and others.

The faux-conservatives decry the nonexistent teaching of “critical race theory”, but what they are truly upset about is the kind of deep, searingly honest instruction, discussion, and history that this film documents.

Civil War is on Peacock and Hulu now, also available via podcast.

    1. Thank you.

My 2021 vision board included a goal to spend at least 1/3rd of my screen time on documentary and other non fiction.  The themes here cause me anxiety anyway, but add the revelations of Q: Into the Storm and others and  I seriously doubt the stability of American style democracy.

  2. My favorite Churchill quote was when he was first lord of the afmiralty and proposed some innovation that he was icily told was not in the tradition of the British navy.

"Ahh," he replied.  " The traditions of the British Navy: Rum, buggery and the lash! "

    1. It’s impossible to deny the man had a way with words. I’m rather partial to this:

Indeed it has been said that democracy is the worst form of Government except for all those other forms that have been tried from time to time.

      1. I also love his response after he was criticized for sending aid to the USSR after Hitler attacked his former lickspittle Stalin.

“If Hitler invaded Hell, I would at least make a favorable reference to the devil in the House of Commons.”

That’s my attitude in building a united front against the Trump blatherskite regime.

    1. Funny thing about such pay-outs:  courts find out a policy violates the Constitution, our treaties, or our laws, we think people who have suffered deserve some recompense.  Smart lawyers, knowing what damages and penalties COULD be assessed, suggest talking to see if a settlement can be reached that is LESS expensive than the likely outcome of a trial.

I'd bet that if some police agency separated your drivers and your trucks for a year or two, you might want to sue for damages.

    1. Normally, I am not been concerned with online grammar and spelling except to knock some stuffing out of the swells and living unaware Dunning Kruger models.

I am sure you mean they are worth it, which would contract to they're worth it, as in they are.

      1. Roger and I have disagreed in the past because we define conservatism differently. I'm a hard core, rabid, frothing at the mouth, Never Trumper. But, I can say that I don't recall Roger making overt racist statements at any time.

For what it's worth, some types of cheese don't work for me either because I'm lactose intolerant.

        1. “Overt” is a fairly high low-bar.  Pfruit dog whistles with the best of the worst real Republicans.  I recall his comments about not needing to speak Spanish, when he was getting his sorry lactose intolerant ass flogged by shorter Coffman — along with dozens of other immigrant digs, here

Old Time Dem ain’t wrong. And, Pfruit ain’t “lactose intolerant” as much as he’s simply Mexican “intolerant” . . .

Lactose intolerant?  Why, sure, that’s gotta’ be what he was indicating . . . FFS

          1. Yeah, and the old stereotype of laziness are textbook racist jokes.

I’m not looking to start a thing, but that kind of thing is exactly what is worrisome about this site.

Overton’s window is moving and”harmless” jokes are doing whistles just out of herself range, but younger ears are more attuned and quick to learn.

        2. It really doesn't matter if you don't remember if "Roger" made racist statements before, because he just made one now.

For what its worth, defending racists is kind of racist, too.

                1. Old Time Dem: thank you for confirming that you are “woke.” This gives you power and authority to restrict freedom of speech and to unilaterally determine what speech, if any, is harmful or racist. With your power, you can then try to isolate and freeze out anyone who disagrees with you.

Reminds me of the “woke” culture on the right where all Republicans are “required” to provide unquestioning loyalty to the Trump personality cult.

                    1. The freedom to say stupid shit depends entirely on not ever being called into question for saying it . . .

                      . . . just sayin'.

                    2. It’s the logical next step.

Allow me to introduce KW to: “The threat from the illiberal left.” This was the cover story from the September 4-10, 2021 issue of The Economist. It’s usually behind a paywall unless you know someone with a subscription. Or, one of the local JeffCo libraries may have it. Very informative reading.

You might also go online for the October, 2021 issue of Centennial Review, from the Centennial Institute. Centennial is ran by Jeff Hunt, a nasty version of Jon Caldara. The article in this issue quotes, and has an interview with, Mike Gonzalez. Among other things, he equates diversity, equity, inclusion with critical race theory.

                    3. Diversity + equity + inclusion = critical race theory. Do you agree with him?

Diversity is good for the economy

Equity is good for the economy.

It must be the inclusion part. I will look it up and get back 2U.

                    1. Please excuse my intrusion on your reply button…I ran out. This is for CHB.

I went to the CCU site..the Centennial Institute…and looked up Mr. Hunt himself.

I could get to nothing regarding the comparison you attribute to Mr. Hunt. Can you provide a link?

            1. I also missed that . . .

. . . Maybe it occurred during your anointment to the diagnosing of lactose intolerance in the dog whistling of real Republicans?  (I missed that one, too . . .)

  3. Rep. Boebert is in elite company:

    Oct 27th, 2021

WASHINGTON, DC – Leaders of the Renew America Movement today released a list of top Republican targets in the 2022 election. Dubbed “The Dividers,” the list includes 13 infamous conspiracy theorists, overt white nationalists, and prominent election deniers – including members of House GOP leadership – who in various ways have posed a threat to a healthy democracy and a well-functioning republic…. Lauren Boebert (CO-03).

She beat out 200 other Republicans in the delegation to make the list.  I'm betting she's planning a fundraising pitch based on this recognition.

    1. Of course, unless they are planning on primarying her, it is unlikely they can unseat her.

That said, highlighting her antics here can be useful in races elsewhere.  The company you keep wot wot

I expect her January 6th indictment to drop around July 2022

  4. Reportedly COP26 attendees were fed a vegan meal last night, which has set off a fury of responses from the meat industry. Who’s going to tell them vegan meals are made from plants?  The kind farmers grow?

I love a good piece of meat as much as the next guy. This hysteria doesn’t help their cause.  When you’re explaining in an elevated pitch, you’re losing the debate. We need hooved animals on the land to restore carbon. If only we hadn’t spent the last decade demonizing the carbon-climate discussion maybe they’d take us more seriously … 🤷‍♂️

  5. I just want to report that I had a great day today.

The Tennyson Business Association had a Halloween event on Tennyson Street in Denver. A zillion people showed up. No one was masked because we have all had our Covid vaccinations. The kids got candy. The adults got beer. The dogs in costume got to compete for major prizes. The weather was perfect —sunny and warm.

    1. It was a perfect autumn day. Several dozen of us showed up to canvass for Democratic candidates in Lakewood, and there were a surprising number of people home, and willing to at least listen and take the literature. Trying to goose those ballot return numbers.

In Jeffco, we're like 25K Dem ballots returned, 22K R returned, and 27K UAF returned.

Statewide, Rs are turning in ballots faster (at a higher rate) than we are.

I can barely imagine what it was like when we had to wait to vote until election day. I feel bad for people in red states. On the other hand, our easy and secure elections are the major factor in why we are a purple state now.

  6. The question of the day is…

When will Chuck Todd go to work as a paid employee of Fox News? He is such a Biden basher, I am surprised he doesn't have a "Let's go, Brandon" sign on his set.

      1. Which reminds me of a MAGA conversation this past week in the north woods. I’ve been assured that Democrats are funding research on operations that will make men able to carry – gestate babies. It’s a real thing. They heard it somewhere. They were also compelled to share with me the delivery would have to be cesarean.

This is our ‘Merika.  Four billion years of evolution from the shallow end of the pond.

        1. Free community college for millionaire’s kids, critical race theory preschool indoctrination, algorithms, jewish laser space stations, microchipped toilet paper, male maternity delivery, a designated quarterback rule, . . .

. . . there’s a lot of things most people who can’t or won’t read aren’t aware of in that infrastructure bill.

          6,000 years of right-wing dinosaur rodeos . . .

        2. Well, there was a trans-man who had a baby.  But biologically, said parent was a woman whatever he was psychologically.   So don't panic just yet, guys.

    1. Cool story, thanks!
I had no idea that Children’s was running the Pfizer kid’s vaccine trial, but I’m not surprised.
Much respect to the families and nurses who worked to save our kiddos.

  7. Pulitzer Prize writer and historian Jon Meacham has been "uninvited" from speaking as part of the upcoming inaugural activities for the new president of Samford University.  This was done in the wake of a large right-wing student protest against Meacham, who (for me) has been one of the great voices of sanity and moderation in the wake of our most recent upheavals.

I’ve had the chance to meet and talk with Jon twice in the last three years. What a gentle soul with a great sense of humor.
