Pawlenty Backs Romney--Will It Help?

One month ago Tim Pawlenty was on a stage in Iowa debating against Mitt Romney, but today the former Minnesota governor – no longer in the presidential race – became a national co-chair for Romney’s campaign.

“Mitt Romney is fighting for the same things I fought for as governor and during my campaign for president,” Pawlenty said today. “As a former blue state governor, I appreciate what Mitt was able to do in Massachusetts. He created jobs and balanced his budgets without raising taxes – even with an over eighty percent Democrat legislature. That ability to get things done is what we need in our nominee.”

It’s generally agreed that Mitt Romney did well in last week’s debate against Texas Gov. Rick Perry–critically for Romney, as a poor showing would have only added weight to polls showing Perry erasing Romney’s frontrunner status. Romney’s Friday fundraiser in Denver went well, at least based on the very limited press coverage he received, and the endorsement from Pawlenty is helpful…well, we’ll have to get back to you on exactly how it’s helpful, but we assume it is.

Don’t expect that any of this is causing Romney’s staff to breathe a sigh of relief, though–any “stability” that Romney is hoping to show after last week’s debate isn’t yet reflected in poll numbers. The polls show, no matter how many local GOP luminaries co-host his fundraisers or also-ran candidates join Team Romney, that he is the candidate with everything to lose.

Now you see the wisdom of Colorado Republicans who supported Romney last year and are sticking with him this year. Perry can also beat Obama (hell, my cat could beat Obama if the election was today), but Romney has staying power and broader appeal.

    Obama has lost his mandate to lead. Next years voters will show up like this for Obama …. No registered GOP votes, 3 of 10 independent votes, and 5 of 7 Democrat votes.
    
    The country is seeking a leader who will bring balanced and accountable change. We are looking for a new day.

        We went with the safe candidate in 2004 and paid for it. I voted for Kerry, but he was far from inspiring.

        Fantastic man, huge personality, he’s the guy you want as your neighbor.
        
        I suspect Perry is too, but not having met him I can’t say that.
        
        You all really should consider a sit down with Obama and at least run over the idea of having Hillary run in his place. Get Biden out of there too, the guy is killing you.

        Christ, ‘Tad, even you should be smart enough not to use the “would drink beer with” candidate selection method.
        
        Vote for the best potential President, not the best personality. Any presidential candidate has a larger than life personality when they’re “on.” They wouldn’t have gotten that far without some charisma. Even Tom Tancredo, Bob Barr, Ron Paul, Dennis Kucinich and other “not a chance in Hell” presidential candidates are charming in person.
        
        I mean, far be it from me to judge you for having a silly crush, but please don’t actually vote on that basis. You don’t see me writing in Jo Calderone or Shirley Manson or even James Mejia for President, do you?

        So how they come across in person doesn’t mean much. Romney looks like he’s trying to foce himself to be exciting and it doesn’t look natural. He comes across as a guy that can’t really relate to the common American. After all, how much is his new mansion going cost? It’s like John Kerry going wind-surfing in Nantucket.
