Michele Obama is like a main character in Planet of the Apes. Are you howling with laughter yet?

(Stay classy, talk radio – promoted by Colorado Pols)

When it comes to being insensitive toward minorities and women and others, sometimes the line between humor and insult is obviously in legitimate dispute, and, in any case, the best course for those offended is to ignore and move on.

But there are cases when, clearly, righties (and lefties) deliver racial slurs and other verbal assaults that I don’t want to sit there and accept as ok.

Here’s an example from the Jimmy Lakey Show, on KVOR-740 AM in Colorado Springs.

A caller says Michele Obama reminds her of “one of the main characters in Planet of the Apes.”

This comment sends talk-show host Lakey into complete hysterics, howling with laughter.

You really have to hear it to believe it. It’s only 30 seconds, and here it is if you’re interested.

I contacted Bobby Irwin, Operations Manager for Citadel Broadcasting, which owns KVOR, to find out if he agreed with me that Lakey’s behavior crosses the line.

Here’s Irwin’s response:

Thanks for the opportunity to respond for your blog.

Regardless of whether one is rightie or a leftie, the comment from the caller was unfortunate. Neither Jimmy nor the station could answer whether

his laughter following her Michelle Obama observation was out of humor or simply discomfort.

I know how I would have preferred him to respond, but our station can not dictate what callers say, and as long as our hosts are observing FCC

guidelines, we will not dictate how they are respond to callers.

Lakey could level some horribly indecent insults and remain within FCC guidelines, but Irwin is correct, isn’t he, that we don’t really know why Lakey is laughing. Maybe he’s uncomfortable. Or maybe he thinks it’s hilarious that Brenda said something so brazenly offensive. I mean, it’s possible.

The easiest way to know what he was thinking is to ask him. Maybe he’ll apologize.

I tried to contact Lakey, but he didn’t get back to me. Here’s an email address (jonathan@jimmylakey.com) and phone number (888-285-4669) I found for him, if you want to try your luck. Please forward any response you get to me.

  1. of both Brenda and the host. His laughter and then reminding his audience that someone else had characterized her as some sort of animal. No matter what Lakey says I’ll think he was laughing to indicate agreement with a racist caller which is intended to encourage others.

Never heard him, or even of him. He is apparently trying to be Rush/Glenn junior. Anyone with any kind of sensibility might have asked “What makes you say that Brenda?”

    1. an articulate, bright and clean African-American. (Biden)

Or…that she was light-skinned with no Negro dialect. (Reid)

Both in reference to the President.

      1. this type of behavior has been fully vetted by HTAT and is now clearly acceptable behavior because he sees an unintentional flub as equivalent to hardcore ugly racism. Whether or not you mean it is now moot because he can demonstrate 2 dems who did it by accident, so we should thereby condone all of it wholesale.

Thanks for your contribution. I’m glad you’re in charge.

      2. They usually justify every sleazy thing conservatives say or do by claiming they aren’t sleazy things at all. It’s librul pc police,or libruls are playing the racism card, whatever.  But when it’s so obviously sleazy or bigoted or racist they just switch to the but Johnny does it too argument. They never, ever say it was despicable, I deplore it and there’s no excuse.  Ever.

  2. will be happy to explain why you are completely out of line to  see anything amiss here. You may be told, as I have been, that you just see racism everywhere.  Uh-huh.  Or should I say riiight!?

    1. Maybe he meant one of the humans. I mean, walking into the Tea Party dominated Congress as a Democratic First Lady must FEEL a bit like discovering that your homeworld has been colonized by gibbons, right? That’s probably what he meant. Clearly not racist! You hypersensitive liberals, you!

      1. … he once called out Mark G for bigoted verbiage. Other times he puts on the partisan blinders to deny that Fox’s Obama-is-lazy-and-foreign meme is racially tinged, but unlike Arap or Lib, he’s capable of at least a little nuance on race

      1. I don’t see any comment from Ralphie here complaining about snarky imaginings of what ArapG is doing. Interesting.

But what the righties really should be looking for are examples of any Rs or TPers calling some white Dem pol they dislike an ape.  That would show that reaching for ape images has nothing to do with race.

They say lots of insulting things about Joe Biden, for instance, but do they ever compare him to an ape or e-mail cartoons depicting him as an ape?  Dennis Kucinich is much farther to the left than Obama.  Do righties compare him to an ape?  If ArapG or Markie or ‘tad can produce plenty of ape images or jokes from righties in reference to white pols (and their wives) whom they oppose then we’ll have to concede this kind of thing has nothing to do with racism.  If not….not.
