Clever Stunt. Now What's the Point?

  • by: Colorado Pols

A group of young Republicans at Mesa State College in Grand Junction held a marriage ceremony between eight students and goldfish yesterday in an effort to…um…well, we have no idea what point they were trying to make. Take a look at this story from the Grand Junction Sentinel:

Mesa State Young Republicans President Allen Haggerty, a 20-year-old junior, said the group doesn’t think legalizing same-sex marriage would result in the legalization of fish-human unions. The group does believe marriage is defined as between a man and a woman, and that it is also the best family structure.

“We need a line drawn, and it’s already drawn,” Haggerty said.

Haggerty, wearing a Bob Beauprez campaign sticker, said the event was not to show support for lieutenant governor candidate Janet Rowland’s comment earlier this year about same-sex marriage and bestiality.

“I support Janet Rowland,” Haggerty said. “I think bestiality is taking it to the extreme.”

Okay. So they were protesting against a same-sex marriage display at the college, but…seriously, we have no idea what the point of this was supposed to be.

    1. If Gecko’s hanging out with this crowd, I guess I begin to see his point.

So they perform a ceremony between eight students and goldfish, but say it’s not about fish-human unions.  And it’s not about Rowland’s comments, and talking about bestiality is “taking it to the extreme”.  But they still performed the ceremony anyway.  “Because a line needs to be drawn, and it’s already drawn.”  Um, either it needs to be or it already is.

Note to Republicans: don’t let the College Republicans out of your sight; make sure you have some say in their events.  Because they’re embarassing if you don’t.  (PS – you might want to add right-wing talking heads, Senators, Representatives, State Representatives and Senators, Governors, Presidents and Vice-Presidents, and just about anyone else that’s survived the RRR nomination process to that list of people you keep under control…)

  1. You gotta love ’em. There are no groups in the world with a worse case of little man syndrome.

Keep it up, boys! Brilliant stunts like this will save the world from the tyranny of liberal professors.

  2.   Who threw the bridal bouquet?  Did it float?  And what was served at the reception? I trust it wasn’t fish?  Was Mr. Limpett the best man?  Daryl Hanna act as a bride’s maid?

  3. > The group does believe marriage is defined as between a man and a woman, and that it is also the best family structure.

Is anyone discussing what’s better?  There is no better.  There just is.  BETTER is what makes every individual happy. I think a gay man might not agree that marrying a woman is a better family structure — for him.

    Idiots.

  4. I hope all these brilliant higher ed students have been issued plastic stomachs so they can see where they are going when the have their heads up their A__.

  5. with all of their concern about bestiality, I am becoming convinced that Rick Santorum, Janet Rowland and Mr. Haggarty may be concerned that, were it legal, their spouses (or future spouses in Mr. Haggarty’s case) might just opt for the dog/goat/goldfish in their stead.  They are worried about the competition.

    Were I them, I would be too…..
