  1. A couple of their greatest creations.

Jerry Leiber, lyricist of of the legendary team Leiber and Stoller. (Sorry about the commercial on the front end)

And Motown songwriter, producer, and performer Nick Ashford, the husband and partner of Valerie Simpson.

(And one of my favorite James Jamerson bass parts, too.  Turn up the bass)

    1. She collapsed in his arms on stage and died days later – he thought it was because her boyfriend beat her.  It really changed him (Obviously Gaye and Terrell, not Lieber and Stoller).

      1. Look at the chemistry between them in that video.

There’s a story that Valerie Simpson did all of Terrell’s unfinished vocal tracks on the last album just to give the family a payday because of all her medical expenses.

  2. of truly great roasters.

All kidding aside, one of my very favorites from Billy Ward and the Dominoes:

(Forgive the goofy video, it’s all I could find on youtube.  Hang in there for some uproarious vintage Jerry Lewis.)

  3. Lou Reed’s uber-competent backup band, more or less, from his Rock & Roll Animal album coupled with his own, uh, high-pitched nervous system combine for this fairly hilarious live version:

  4. intended, but I figured the video accurately portrays many of our home “lives” living in our mothers’ basements. The only other message may be that I have lousy taste in music, but you knew that.

On the other hand, they mention a bus late in the song, which thus ties in with the COPols theme today. There’s death, too, which ties in with another of today’s themes. Also, I think I spotted Khadafi (sp?) in one scene.

  5. after running into this band. I loved their musical ability, her songwriting ability, and her Patsy Cline star quality (ok, I’ll take some flak for that PC comment).

So, this is for “Irene” (I was thinking of choosing REO Speedwagons “Riding the Storm Out):

      1. I had no choice. As a man of Science, I know you’ll understand.

And yes, I am a pretender. That is my confession.

You Sir, are not a pretendor.

        Ok…the suit.

My definition of a suit might be different than yours.

        TOUCHDOWN PACKERS!
