And I'm out!

  • by: SSG_Dan

Just a quick note – after a month of being 100% CoPols free, I’ve decided to punch out and walk away.

And sorry ‘tad, it wasn’t you. Or the depths of ignorance from some of our more “noted” Polsters like The Beej.

It was Mostar and Dubrovnik.

After just not quite twenty years, I went back to see the rebuild cities of Dubrovnik, Croatia and Mostar, Bosnia. It shocked me that these cities had rebuilt from the smoldering ruins of bloody civil war and returned to their past glory.

My last images of these cities were hellish scenes of flames, smashed buildings and former neighbors trying to kill each other in the most personal of combat. Now they just want to sell you delicious food, wonderful handmade Bosnian Coffee sets (of which I bought) and odd trinkets made from 127mm machine gun shells.

It was inspiring enough to make me realize I need to stop creating elections with my keyboard so that a select few can do the same. So I’m off to back up one of my threats I’ve promised to do.

Maybe I’ll go and do political commercials for the Dems….or work on a national campaign staff….or become the Leftie version of O’Keefe, only with talent and journalistic standards.

You’ll figure it out when it happens.

“Aye, in my heart thoult have a place,

Among the friends held dear,-

Nor shall the hand of Time efface

The memories written there.”

Mark Twain

What should SSG Dan do instead of posting on Colorado Pols?

  1. Keep in touch, man. You do good work. I think I found you on Facebook one time, but I try not to know who people are if they didn’t tell me, so I didn’t add you and I consciously put the last name out of my head. Now I regret it ’cause I won’t know what you’re doing.

Come back and tell us where you land, eh?

  2. I just went to Dubrovnik in June with family for 10 days for the first time.  That is quite a coincidence.

We stayed up the hill from Banje Beach (Petra Kresmira), spent a few afternoons in Lapad, walked the old wall around old town, sea kayaked around Lokrum Island, etc. etc. etc. Also took the cable car up to the top of the hill to see the war museum.

The first night we were there we went to a biker bar and the owner got tired at midnight and just told us to leave our bottles on the table when we were done. Awesome. Karlovachko is awesome too !

I have been all over the world and some pretty damn nice places and I have never, NEVER, seen a place as wonderful as Dubrovnik.  I want to go back next year and the next.

Super clean, crystal clear water, wonderful friendly people, great food, very low crime, zero trash, no grifters or scammers or rip off artists, great nightlife and bars and all at a reasonable price.  Our apartment was 900 Euros for a week.  Not bad considering the view and how beautiful it all was.

Above all though the Buza Bar was the best.  Where in the hell else in the world can you order a beer then dive off a 100 foot cliff ?

Watch out Italy, France, Greece.  Serious tourism competition has arrived from Croatia.

      1. Dubrovnik is peaceful, beautiful paradise.  You would never know a war was there, except for old houses in the surrounding areas that haven’t patched up the old bullet holes.  That was the only thing I could see.

Next year we may go to Split, or Zagreb, or both.

        1. Is full of gems and wonderful places.  I spent a few weeks checking out the islands and coast (and inland) around 2005.  Dubrovnik is very nice.  I liked Split too, and some of the less visited places like Sbinik (sp, I’m sure), and Kotor in Montenegro.  Korcula is very much worth visiting.

When I was there there were definitely lingering resentments (and I heard the range of perspectives…), but it was coming back strong and people were generally hopeful and glad to show off and share their nations (as well as their opinions and stories).

I want to get back and go down into Albania next.

        2. The pictures from the Battle of the Bulge make it look like it was pretty much leveled. But all the buildings are there, in good shape (but old), and you still see bullet holes everywhere. And this is 65 years later.

  3. What a loss to this community.

If this isn’t what you want to do, good luck with whatever else holds your interest.

But your posts were always my favorite reads here.  You are leaving a huge vacuum.

      1. .

        but you knew that.

and I guess she’s better known for saying

“The good you do today, people will often forget tomorrow; Do good anyway.”

but I think she also said the other.

        .

  4. that you are leaving us. Sarge, your posts, as Ralphie said, were my favorites. Your departure from these pages is a significant downgrade. I hope you will someday reconsider…

    Vaya con Dios, Amigo.

  5. Although I’ve never liked “czar” designations. Seems like that would be helping others.

But the more I think about it, the O’Keefe angle gives you a chance to have some fun going off on people. Might be something that gives you a spring in your step in the morning.

As for the vid games on hydrocodone: sounds like a great way, long term, to ruin your eyes and (due to the acetaminophen in the Vicodin) your kidneys.

Whatever it is, make the most of it. And enjoy!

  6. You’ll be back though. Many people have said goodbye only to return later.

In the meantime, whatever you decide to do, do it with the same passion and style you showed here.

  7. assume you meant 12.7 mm machine gun shells, about .50 caliber, not 127, which would be about a 5-inch gun like those mounted on destroyers.  Seriously, Dan, take as much time off as you need but don’t opt off of pols.  Your insights and passion are needed.

  8. And thank you to the service you gave to our wonderful country!

I gotta say this though – I left for California, cashed out of politics and did my best to invest completely in my film career – not out of bitterness – it’s just the right next step

(….but ColoradoPols proves to be a woman that I’ll just NEVER give up – my admiration if you can)
