  1. AP points out the on-going hazard of driving on I-70:

Mudslides force more than 100 to spend night on highway

Mike Goolsby, a regional director for the transportation department, said the area was affected by about 10 slides, some 12 feet (4 meters) deep and up to 150 feet (46 meters) wide.

“I’m very grateful that no one was hurt. … We’ve tried our hardest not to have people in the canyon when these flash flood warnings hit, but it was the best case scenario for all of us based on the outcome this morning,” he said.

More rain in the forecast — leading to a flash flood watch.

  2. It all makes sense now.

Rep Boebert's mom can leech off of welfare and any other public assistance because she never married her baby daddy, nor could prove who it was so that the states where she was living could pin the child support on him. And it is ok.

Rep Paul Ryan can claim helping invisible hand from Social Security and it is ok.

Hell, even Ayn Rand can go on Medicare and Social Security and it was ok.

See, none of them wanted it. It has nothing to do with anything that they were white, it was all about their lack of desire.

Tucker Carlson does not want people to die of covid, so it is ok that his half baked, dangerous 'only asking questions' conspiracy laden allusions kill people. He needs ratings.

    Clean air.
    Clean water.
Forests that do not burn uncontrollably.
    Functional Social Security and Medicare.
    I vote yes.

  3. Who's going to break the news to Reppy le PewPew that of the two nations that exist for the glory of God, one of them is about to roll out a third round of vaccinations?

The Science Says Everyone Needs a COVID-19 Booster Shot—and Soon

The example of Israel clearly suggests as much. Because it was the first nation to mass vaccinate its population, scientists around the world are paying close heed to events unfolding there. The government began rolling out the first doses in January and by July had achieved two-dose immunization of 58 percent of its population over 12 years old. Though an estimated 1 million adults still refused vaccination, the government eased nearly all behavior-restricting regulations, including mask-wearing.

But by July the Israeli miracle sobered up, revealing that fully vaccinated people were protected against severe disease and death but not necessarily against infection. In early July, the Ministry of Health announced effective immunity among the fully vaccinated had dropped to 64 percent, from the 95 percent level measured two months previously. Then, on July 17, the ministry reported a surge in breakthrough cases involving the delta variant. Most cases occurred in people either who had been fully vaccinated more than four months previously, indicating the waning immunity problem, or who were just completing their shots in July, too recently to be completely effective.

    From Vox

    Covid-19 vaccine boosters in Israel

    • In Israel, which had an early start on the vaccination campaign, the prime minister is announcing a program to provide Pfizer/BioNTech booster shots to people over 60 who had their second shots at least five months ago. [CNN / Amir Tal, Jacqueline Howard, and Andrew Carey]
    • The delta variant has led to a new wave of infections in Israel, where case counts rose from the single digits to over 2,000 daily new cases in a month. [Times of Israel]
    • About 30,000 Israelis have already booked booster appointments. Prime Minister Naftali Bennett’s goal is to get all 1.5 million people who qualify to get their boosters within the next 10 days. [Jerusalem Post / Maayan Jaffe-Hoffman]
    • Bennett compared the boosters to receiving an annual flu shot to accommodate mutations and the vaccines weakening over time. Israeli President Isaac Herzog, 60, was the first to receive the new jab. [Washington Post / Shira Rubin]
    • Israel’s Health Ministry found that while the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine was still 88 percent effective against hospitalization and 91 percent effective against death, it was only proving to be 39 percent effective against the delta variant, necessitating the booster. [CNBC / Berkeley Lovelace Jr.]

  4. "exist for the glory of god……." Don't tell Two Gun or any of her far right evangelical supporters that Israel's laws on abortion are among the most liberal in the world.

  5. Hmmm….is Ben Kuck just playing his crowd like a fiddle??

House Republicans’ Cynical, Empty Threats Against Big Tech

The actual antitrust proposals in the Jordan agenda range from limp (expedited trial court procedures) to inane (direct appeal of antitrust cases to the Supreme Court). But all the proposed changes to “antitrust” law are superficial. The truth is that Reps. McCarthy, Jordan, and other Republicans who remain “conservative” about antitrust don’t really want to change the antitrust laws. Instead, they’re making empty gestures about changing antitrust law so they can look like they’re doing something against tech companies perceived to be hostile to conservatives.

    1. Informative article, thanks. I found this FTC page helpful as an antitrust primer for those of us who need it.

Yup, Bucko is one of the most cynical and opportunistic politicians around today, which is a high bar.

He’s still beating that “anti-Big Tech” drum in his weekly constituent letters, but trying to seem moderate and touting bipartisan bills with Democrats. But when he hits up his presumably unhinged donor network, he amps up the crazy, and somehow neglects to mention working with Democrats at all.

      1. . . . especially if I were the anchor baby to my redneck mommy’s teenage schemes to achieve the glamorous and glitzy life afforded to hangers-on on the fringes of 1980’s professional wrestling . . .

. . . and, in order to spare himself a Franklin a week, my steroid-addled lecher daddy later sought out, criminally conspired with, and hired a known-for-sale medical technician sleaze to help him to continue to hide and deny his one-nighter contribution to my existence . . .

. . . But, hey, wasn’t this the script from some Disney princess pilot?

          1. No, her family isn't dignified enough for the The Bold and the Beautiful.

Her family values more closely resemble the Gallaghers in Shameless.

    1. Eight years ago this morning we had the fortune of gathering for a very special Colorado Day. The opportunity to not only fly the hemp flag for the first time over a state capitol, but to celebrate a young man's journey one-year anniversary of being 'seizure free'; a life made possible thanks to a hemp plant, a mother with a heart and the drive the size of Pikes Peak, a group of brothers committed to the industry and a state with the gumption to be the first legal state in America.

All that, and a (then) Congressman, Jared Polis, who believed in our industry enough to take the fight to the House floor just over one month prior, setting the course for a national pilot program.

This young man has been an inspiration to so many. Watching him jump the steps at the capitol that morning, smiling, interacting was a real blessing. It was a moment when just one of the many benefits of the plant went from intangible to tangible.

  6. What the effin’ heck is this annoying “google snippet preview” icon (purple circle with a white symbol that looks like an overhead view of Starship Enterprise flying towards 2 o’clock) that appeared on this site yesterday, without any notification or announcement (… WTFF?), and now follows me around constantly when I’m signed in (stays in the lower left hand of my screen everywhere I go)?

And, more importantly, how the hell do I disable it!!? — Completely! Permanently!

    1. The Google Snippet preview is a tool that properly should only be used when writing a diary. It allows the writer to specify how the diary will show up in Google Search results.

It has to be a mistake to allow that icon to follow every Pols reader or commenter, not just diary writers. It can’t be disabled in one’s Pols profile- I checked.

My guess is it’s yet another tool to allow Google to track what we read and write, and so to customize the ads that we see. For example, when I comment about right-wing violence or white supremacy, suddenly my ad sidebar is filled with camo clothes, menacing neck gaiters, and inquiries about whether I think that Trump is President. If I type something about being female, I get girly clothes and makeup ads.

It appears to allow me to edit the Google preview for any post I comment on- for example, I just edited the Weekend Open Thread Google Snippet to vjkfchjcjkgv and then back to

“If we do not maintain justice, justice will not maintain us.”

      –Francis Bacon

It has to be a mistake to allow any random commenter to do that.

Pols, if you can disable this tool, at least for casual readers and commenters, please do. It’s annoying.

    2. It was something none of you were ever meant to see.

Even now, as time goes by, we become less certain you saw it at all. Perhaps you were mistaken. Probably best to just pretend it never happened and move on with your lives citizens.
