What you can do to fight for progress this week (July 12)

It’s All-Star Week in Colorado, and as you may already know there’s a story behind the big game being played in our state.

Joe Biden won the 2020 presidential election, and it wasn’t particularly close, but one state where the margin of victory was close was Georgia. However, recount after recount proved the election was legitimate. In retaliation for Biden’s narrow victory conservative politicians in Georgia passed a controversial vote suppression law to make it harder for people of color and disadvantaged communities who helped swing the state in last year’s election to vote.

It wasn’t just Major League Baseball who spoke out against Georgia’s vote suppression law. Coca-Cola, Delta Airlines, and other major Georgia corporations all condemned this spiteful assault on voting rights and the “Big Lie” behind them that the election was somehow stolen from Donald Trump. Big corporations don’t always do the right thing, of course, but they always have the freedom to.

And that’s what happened. Thanks to quick work by Gov. Jared Polis of Colorado and Mayor Michael Hancock of Denver, [1] Colorado’s best-in-the-nation election system (and love of baseball no matter how bad the Rockies’ season) resulted in one of the sport’s biggest events relocating from Georgia to Colorado. This is a win that everyone in Colorado should be proud of, and it’s a shame that Trump loyalist conservatives aren’t able to celebrate with the majority of Coloradans.

Now it’s time to take Colorado’s election model national. Despite some disappointments, the fight isn’t over to protect and expand voting rights in Washington. It’s more important than ever that you let our U.S. Senators know voting rights matter to you as a Colorado voter. Take a moment right now to sign up for action alerts from the Declaration for American Democracy coalition as we continue to fight to protect voting rights utilizing every available option.

Colorado’s redistricting outreach campaign is rolling along! The independent redistricting commissions who will draw the new maps for Colorado’s congressional and legislative districts are touring the state throughout July and August. In Colorado, citizens have more power over the redistricting process than many other states–but that’s only a good thing if we use it. This week, residents of Arvada and Denver in particular can testify on keeping their communities intact and ably represented. No matter where you live in the state, commissioners want to hear from you. Click here to sign up to be notified about upcoming redistricting hearings in your area.

Thanks as always for everything you do, and here are a few more ways to fight for progress for the week of July 12:

With ongoing orders from the Mayor, our 𝘵𝘢𝘹 𝘥𝘰𝘭𝘭𝘢𝘳𝘴 are being spent on ’cleanup’ efforts that dehumanize, abuse, & displace 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗵𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀. In just 13 short weeks, Denver was able to find a home for the 𝗠𝗟𝗕 “𝗔𝗹𝗹-𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘀”—but city officials in charge of housing still 𝙘𝙖𝙣’𝙩 𝙨𝙚𝙚𝙢 𝙩𝙤 𝙛𝙞𝙣𝙙 𝙖 𝙝𝙤𝙢𝙚 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙢𝙤𝙨𝙩 𝙫𝙪𝙡𝙣𝙚𝙧𝙖𝙗𝙡𝙚 𝙘𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙯𝙚𝙣𝙨.
