What you can do to fight for progress this week (June 14)

Last week, the Colorado legislature adjourned after an historic 2021 session. Although politics in Washington so often dominates the headlines, some of the most important new laws that directly affect our lives passed in the Colorado General Assembly.

And with your help, this year was the most productive and impactful session of the Colorado legislature in nearly a decade. Legislation to reduce the cost of health insurance and prescription drugs, to begin to restore deep cuts to public education funding, billions for road and infrastructure projects across the state, substantial new gun safety legislation, criminal justice reform and police accountability, tackling the climate crisis—the list of achievements from this year’s legislative session goes on and on.

If you haven’t already, check out PNC’s 2021 Winners and Losers of the 2021 Colorado legislative session for more on the highs and lows of these historic past few months. And thank you again for everything you did to help with this historic achievement, whether it was making a phone call, writing an email, or providing testimony on legislation.

It’s summer vacation season after a year—in truth four years—that tested the resolve of all of us. The position we find ourselves today, with a progressive administration and Congress in Washington leading us out of one of the most challenging periods of American history, and a progressive governor and legislative majority here in Colorado working tirelessly to solve instead of ignore the issues we face together, is more hopeful than anything we could have predicted last June.

We’re proud to fight with you, and here are a few more ways to make a difference for the week of June 14:

Denver Justice for Janitors Day 2021

Join over two thousand of our Denver Janitors for a celebration, rally and march on international Justice for Janitors Day! Denver’s janitors, a majority of whom are Latina immigrant women, have been risking their lives and the health and safety of their families to keep us all safe during the pandemic. For many of our city’s janitors, they faced these risks without the proper PPE and protective materials needed to do their jobs. We depend on our local janitors to clean and sanitize the largest buildings in our city, so that we can feel safe to come back to work as we reopen.

One Colorado: Q&A with Representative Leslie Herod

Representative Leslie Herod (HD-8) was elected in 2016 as the first LGBTQ African American in the General Assembly, while receiving the highest number of votes of any candidate running in a contested election. She serves as the Chair of the House Finance Committee, Vice Chair of the House Judiciary Committee, and Chair of the Committee on Legal Services. Rep. Herod also chairs the Colorado Black Democratic Legislative Caucus and the Arts Caucus. One Colorado Executive Director, Nadine Bridges, will sit down with Rep. Herod to discuss her accomplishments and challenges during the 2021 legislative session, as well as the broader racial justice and LGBTQ equality movements.

Colorado Fiscal Institute: Racist Roots of Tax Policy Webinar

The Colorado Fiscal Institute invites you to join us for a zoom webinar to understand the history and reasons behind why racism is at the root of tax policy, and how we can change the tax code to create a system that builds a more equitable future. Join our policy manager, Esther Turcios, and our economist, Chris Stiffer during this one hour event and discussion about our tax code.

2021 Juneteenth Summit

From June 16-18th, the TCC will host its first virtual summit to gather anti-racism practitioners, grassroots organizers, and like-minded movement builders across the nation. This inaugural summit seeks to lay a foundation for a national narrative shift towards conciliation in the United States. Additionally, it will provide attendees with tools for truth telling, unlearning, and accountability for building an anti-racist society.

LOGIC Oil and Gas Financial Assurance Webinar Part 1

Join LOGIC and our co-Sponsors Earthworks, Colorado Sierra Club, and Western Colorado Alliance on Wednesday, June 16 from 6-8 p.m. for Part 1: Oil and Gas Revenue of a three-part webinar on oil and gas and financial assurances. SB19-181 directed the COGCC to undertake a rulemaking to address this issue. Currently, the State has grossly inadequate financial assurance requirements, and research shows that there could be as much as $8 Billion in outstanding, unprotected liability just in Colorado! Part one of the webinar series is designed to give impacted Coloradans the tools we need to pick apart these industry claims and better understand how operates do and do not actually generate revenue for local governments and fracked communities.

2021 Colorado Consumer Health Initiative Legislative Wrap Up

CCHI has worked hard to advance a number of important bills that will improve health care affordability and equity for Coloradans this legislative session. Join us as we wrap up and celebrate the achievements from the session. One Colorado: LGBTQ Pop-Up Vaccine Clinic

Getting vaccinated is the key to beating the pandemic. At the same time, we understand that not all healthcare environments are comfortable spaces for the LGBTQ community. That’s why we are partnering with Denver Public Health and The Center on Colfax to offer a safe space for LGBTQ Coloradans to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. We’ll have goodie bags, snacks, and drag queens to make your vaccine experience as enjoyable as possible!

Generations of Drag in Colorado

Reproductive rights don’t exist in a vacuum — they are inextricably linked to collective liberation for all people. Queer rights are reproductive rights. Ther rights of Indigenous, Latinx, and other people of color are reproductive rights. Youth rights are reproductive rights. This is why Cobalt is excited to partner with Fortaleza Familiar, Tracks Denver, and Anthony Aragon (Miss Gay Pride Colorado) for a multi-generational drag show celebrating the colorful history of drag in Denver.

Planned Parenthood Denver Healthy Neighborhood Lit Drop

Support your local Planned Parenthood health center and the surrounding community by dropping off literature at doors about PP’s health center services. This will be a fun, socially-distanced event in order to continue to be cautious of the COVID 19 pandemic. Gloves, hand sanitizer and masks will be provided for anyone who needs them.
