  1. Iraq isn’t going well.  Afghanistan is still smoldering.  And there has been no real oversight of the poor decisions and failures of the Bush Administration — because the rubber stamp Republican congress is more interested in holding onto power than holding anyone accountable for the serial mistakes and poor planning.

And to hell with the consequences for the military and their families, let alone the long-term consequences for the United States and its loss of prestige, power and influence in the foreign policy arena, which ripples out to everything — trade negotiations, weapons proliferation issues, environmental degradation, energy price negotiations…the loss of the US reputation as an honest broker in the international arena is hurting us.  For the long term.

Our soldiers deserve better.  Our nation deserves better.  Our children deserve better.  And a correctly functioning government provides accountability for bad decisions so that we do not continue to repeat our mistakes, further hurting our long-term efforts.  That has not been the case with the Bush Administration and the rubber stamp Republican Congress — and it is high time that all of them were held to account for their failures.  (h/t Firedoglake)
That means don’t reward Beauprez, Musgrave, or any other Republican with your vote. This country needs a serious change of direction.

    1. Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld have obviously made a huge blunder in Iraq and deserve to be fired for incompetence.  In hindsight there was no reason to ever go into Iraq.  That’s past now, though, and so now we’re forced to deal with the mess we created.

I don’t really like what I hear from Democrats either, though. Ned Lamont says bring troops home yesterday, but I’m not sure that’s the best solution as it would surely mean disintegration in Iraq.  Still, at least he has a concrete idea — a lot of other Democrats don’t seem to know what to do.  “Cut and run” is actually preferable to the paralysis that we see now.

Truth is, I don’t know what to do in Iraq — it’s kind of like asking what you do when you’re down by four touchdowns in the fourth quarter.  Stretching the analogy — maybe it is time to pull the quarterback and fire the coach, but I’d like to hear someone speak up with a detailed enough plan on how to get us out of this mess.  I haven’t heard much of a plan from either party.  I’d certainly vote for anyone who shows some leadership on this issue, though.

      1. One one hand we need to keep to our commitments under Geneva in rebuilding Iraq.  But on the other hand, Iraq is not looking like it’s going to be in any kind of civil shape to allow that rebuilding.  We had a chance when we went in to do the job; that chance is slipping away and soon will be gone in all but the most abstract way.  To “fix” Iraq right now we would need the help of the rest of the world – it is beyond our unilateral ability IMHO.  Pulling back to a point where we can provide over-the-horizing support may be our only option for now; provide monetary and material support for rebuilding where we think that money won’t be wasted.  Our only other option is to isolate one city at a time and rebuild it to the point where the Iraqi government really can take over; I’m not sure that will work any more, either.

The Democratic Party doesn’t speak with one voice on exactly what to do, but we do speak with one voice when saying that the current plan isn’t working, and we can do better.  We can work together to come up with an effective strategy; we can start listening to the planners that Bush has been ignoring for years; we can reach out and solicit ideas and resources that maybe we don’t even know about now; we can reassure the world that Bush isn’t driving this country with the permission of all its citizens, and that there is hope around the corner for a more diplomatically involved U.S.A..

No more cronyism, no more stagnation.  We need a new direction, and Democrats are looking to be that new direction.

    2. I somewhat agree.  It seems to be an ongoing struggle between crusaders trying to convince voters they owe an undying loyalty to their party and voters trying to convince politicians that they owe an undying loyalty to their community.

Right now, I’d say Republican Party leaders are currently ahead in that struggle and a setback would do them some good.  If the Democratic Party is currently any better in that regard, it’s only because the minority party is forced to be a little more responsive to the community.

I think it would almost take a decade of Congressional elections where the majority swapped parties each election before either party really gets the message.

  2. According to the Denver Post:

Earlier this year during a taped discussion on gay marriage, she asked: “Do we allow a man to marry a sheep? I mean at some point, you have to draw the line.’

Rowland made the remarks in March when she was a guest on Rocky Mountain PBS’s “Colorado State of Mind.”

The host asked whether polls showing support for domestic partnership and a ban on gay marriage were “irreconcilable.”

Rowland began her answer by noting that she has gay friends and respect for gays.

“But I believe marriage is between a man and a woman. Homosexuality is an alternative lifestyle,” she said.

“That doesn’t make it a marriage. Some people have group sex,” she said. “Should we allow two men and three women to marry? Should we allow polygamy with one man and five wives? For some people, the alternative lifestyle is bestiality. Do we allow a man to marry a sheep?

“I mean at some point you have to draw the line,” she said.

She made the comments in March. Five months ago. Not last year, not ten years ago, and not before she had been elected into office.

Someone better give her speaking lessons. Because I think she’ll melt under the pressure of the media.

  3. You’re quoted in Campaigns and Elections Magazine this month as being the site that leaked the rumor that Gigi Dennis was going to be Bob’s running mate…..

  4. Today’s a RED and ORANGE ALERT day. How odd. They just caught the British guys with the chemistry sets. But when these guys were about to blow up airliners, the USA was on YELLOW alert. That’s a “lowered” threat notice.

According to the press office from the Department of Homeland Security, lowered-threat Yellow means that there were no special inspections of passengers or cargo. Isn’t it nice of Mr. Bush to alert Osama when half our security forces are given the day off? Hmm. I asked an Israeli security expert why his nation doesn’t use these pretty color codes.

He asked me if, when I woke up, I checked the day’s terror color.

“I can’t say I ever have. I mean, who would?”

    He smiled. “The terrorists.”

America is the only nation on the planet that kindly informs bombers, hijackers and berserkers the days on which they won’t be monitored. You’ve got to get up pretty early in the morning to get a jump on George Bush’s team.

There are three possible explanations for the Administration’s publishing a good-day-for-bombing color guidebook.

    1. God is on Osama’s side.

    2. George is on Osama’s side.

    3. Fear sells better than sex.

If you picked #3 you get a gold star.

  5. This guy doesn’t have to stop at Denver.  He could whomp BWB’s butt, do 8, and then move east. He would be tough to beat even if BWB didn’t keep screwing up. He might even be able to win in the Springs.

  6. Anyone who wilts under the withering pressure of a Public Television interview to the point where they equate gay relationships to men marrying sheep… well, wait until the pressure REALLY starts to mount in September while Beauprez is away courting lobbyist money in D.C.

I predict this first-term Mesa County Commissioner will make some Mel-Gibson-like comment from which there will be no plausible recovery. It’s just a matter of what:

    – Stopping the scourge of bestiality?

    – Requiring creationism to be taught with evolution?

    – No limits whatsoever to weapon ownership? (Machine guns for all! Whoopeeee!)

It’s insulting to think Rowland was put on the ticket to appeal to the “average soccer mom.” Women don’t vote based on hems and hairstyles. There seem to be more political sense in the average soccer BALL than this individual has demonstrated so far.

  7. I was just push polled by Pro mark for the Bob Caskey team.  I talked to the manager and evidently it is a firm from the south (Ten?).  She said that they had several of these polls going and that she knew nothing about who they were for, or when/if they would be published.  The person who gave the questions could barely read and slaughtered all of the names…It was obvious that she knew nothing of what she was inquiring. It seemed like they were polling about the governor’s race, as well as the Caskey vs Buescher race.  Maybe Caskey wants to know just how close he should be to BWB, even with Rowland on the ticket.

At first it was not sure who the poll was for, but after several minutes it became complety obvious that they were fishing for the best possible dirt that the Caskey campaign could use to trash Buescher.  One question went something like this…Would your opinion of Buescher be more or less favorable if you learned that he supports the public payment for sex change opperations for prisoners?  Others had to do with support/not of immigrant college tuition, referendum c and tax stuff.  There were a few other things, but I don’t recall them because of my glee at scewing thier poll.

IMHO Buescher has been a great rep. He is one of the most genuine and humble people that I have ever met who mad a living in government, and he is a true moderate who works well across the isle. He is a great example of why CO is turning blue/purple. It is unfortunate that the RRR’s (as they have become known here) are about to do their best to trash him with stuff like sex changes for prisoners. I only hope that my fellow west slopers do not buy it, but these are the same sheeple who elected Rowland.

        1. Bernie should do a poll that says, “if you knew that Bob Caskey voted for Rep. Buescher would you be more or less likely to vote for Caskey?

    1. First off, Buescher made his living before going into politics.  Buescher is authentic.  Do not label him as a professional politician like Lew Entz who has been under the dome for several decades.

Caskey is still digging for any issue to campaign on. Caskey is not right person to represent Mesa if he doesn’t know what he stands for, let alone what the people want.

Buescher has experience and has done the West slope right.

      1. A good politician always lets others  blow his horn Bernie!  Maybe you should start your door knocking now…Caskey’s got the jump on you there pal!
