(This is a slippery slope, and we’d prefer to stay off of it. This bill sucks. – promoted by Colorado Pols)
In another under-publicized but overreaching government attempt to curb our Internet freedoms, Senators will be voting on what is known as the “Ten Strikes” bill this week. This bill, sponsored by Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), would make it a felony to stream copyrighted content more than ten times-and could result in jail time for offenders.
Will you contact your lawmakers and tell them to oppose this bill? (http://act.demandprogress.org/letter/ten_strikes/?page=sk)
This law wouldn’t just apply to sites that stream television show and movies. As TechDirt points out, “people embedding YouTube videos could face five years in jail…it could also put kids who lip sync to popular songs, and post the resulting videos on YouTube, in jail as well.”
Make sure your Senators know of your opposition. By emailing them directly, you’ll be standing up to big business lobbyists and making a stand for a free and uncensored Internet. Click here to contact your Senators and tell them to vote agains the Ten Strikes Bill (http://act.demandprogress.org/letter/ten_strikes/?page=sk).

Create more prison guard jobs.
Speaking again as someone who has had people post videos we own without permission – this is a penalty so far beyond what is reasonable that I can’t believe it is being considered.
Yes theft and misuse is a problem. But the answer is not to throw kids in jail. It’s not that serious of a crime. The studios in Hollywood are still making money and they have faced problems like this from their earliest days.
. . . still, the prospect of no more caterwauling Russian tart videos does have some positive merit.
But that’s it.
I thought Pols were threatening the penalty box for bad YouTube videos.
he’s posting stuff that will never be posted again and has never been posted.
But, this is really going to far
How on earth am I to know which are ok to post? Some artists want their videos out everywhere while others don’t.
to err on the side of caution. You don’t want to spend your golden years in a Siberian prison.
David–to be completely sure, post NO Russian music videos.
Because I know the two of you would be devastated if the videos stopped 🙂
If the law passed, I’d turn your ass in.
Nothing personal. Just because I hate Russian pop music.
What a waiste of taxpayer money on such a crap bill. Are you kidding me? They are worried about copyright laws when our debt ceiling is peaked, QE3 is about to be implemented, thus forcing hyperinflation?
Here are some facts:
Obama bragged about 54,000 US jobs created last month. 15 Million US citizens are out of work. 7 Million US citizens are under employed. Approximately 20,000 LEGAL immigrants cross over into our country a monthy. More cross over into our country illegally and work under the table, shipping earnings back home – out of our economy. You do the math. What is Obama bragging about? www.numbersusa.com
