Mark Of The Beast, Anyone?

  • by: Colorado Pols

Rep. Lauren “Q*Bert” Boebert (R).

If you haven’t had the pleasure of reading Revelations chapter 13, here’s the Bible passage Rep. Lauren Boebert is referring to in the New International Version:

16 It also forced all people, great and small, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hands or on their foreheads,

17 so that they could not buy or sell unless they had the mark, which is the name of the beast or the number of its name. [Pols emphasis]

18 This calls for wisdom. Let the person who has insight calculate the number of the beast,  for it is the number of a man. That number is 666.

Just so we’re clear what’s happening here, this is an elected member of Congress from Colorado seriously suggesting that the choice of wearing a mask or getting vaccinated against COVID-19 is tantamount to what End Times-believing evangelical Christians call “The Mark of the Beast.” For those of you who don’t know the story, that’s as bad as it gets if you believe in the book of Revelations. Anyone who wants you to “take the Mark” works pretty much directly for Satan at this point in the story and if you do take the Mark, it’s lake of fire for you no matter how pious a person you may have been in life. If you die or otherwise suffer persecution because you don’t have the Mark it’s all good, because Jesus is coming back soon afterward to Armageddon things right.

If you’re one of the millions of faithful Christians who has either been vaccinated or wear a mask to protect yourself and others until you are or the pandemic ends, apparently you’re in the service of the devil now! Sorry about that, we don’t make the rules.

In an era of American when nothing seems able to shock the conscience anymore, we’re taken aback once again. It’s not that this kind of talk is new. It’s that it’s coming from Congress, and speaking for Colorado.

That is indeed scary.

  1. Given her penchant for the literal reading of the Bible, unless she’s wearing her mask on her right hand or on her forehead (not that I’m discounting the possibility she’s doing that) – she can continue to buy and sell all the GQP bullshit she can dream up.

    1. No, no, no, MichaelBowman.  That is the "too literal" reading of the scripture.

Those of us who read Revelations as a document of its place and time, addressed to those around them, obviously do not understand "the meaning" of the Bible, which apparently is unchanging (when someone wants a section to be unchanging and literal). We may be taking it seriously, but not literally.

Those of you who read Revelations as a "common language" document, where one verse deserves the same level of meaning as the next, obviously to not understand "the meaning" of the Bible, which apparently is unchanging (when someone wants a section) and not (when they do not).  You are taking it TOO literally, and not seriously (or you'd agree with the "real" meaning, as explained by the true believers).

Ms. Boebert is taking it "just right."  Just like a Momma Bear ought to.

      1. So I can have the latitude to interpret that section as the real mark of the beast being what’s left on one’s right hand following a trip to the bathroom after eating one of her pork sliders?

  2. 16 It also forced all people, great and small, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hands or on their foreheads,

17 so that they could not buy or sell unless they had the mark, which is the name of the beast or the number of its name.

    Ttump, 45!

    Make America Great Again!

    . . . so, NOW she’s seeing a problem???

    “Scary.”

    1. You have unlocked the biblical prophecy. D-O-N-A-L-D is 6 letters. His family name, D-R-U-M-P-F, is 6 letters. His middle name, in the native tongue, J-O-H-A-N-N, is 6 letters. I have used my wisdom to calculate the number of the beast (Trump), and "that number is 666."

  3. Most schools and child care centers are still requiring masks, since most kids haven’t been vaccinated. I expect we’ll see a lot more bare faces outside.

Wonder what Boebert’s kids are doing?

  4. Ronald Wilson Reagan – 6 letters in each of 3 names, so 666. But wait, there's more! He once moved to a house with the address of 666 St. Cloud Road in L.A., then had the address changed.

  5. Dear Representative Q,

I’m happy to learn that you’re finally applying some of your GED reading skills to the Bible as well as the Constitution.

As you continue to study these documents more, please keep in mind that there is far more to the meaning of both of them than just a selected, preferred string of any few couple of words taken out of the much larger context.

    Yours,

    Me

  6. "The beast was given a mouth to utter proud words and blasphemies and to exercise its authority for forty-two months. 6 It opened its mouth to blaspheme God, and to slander his name and his dwelling place and those who live in heaven. 7 It was given power to wage war against God’s holy people and to conquer them. And it was given authority over every tribe, people, language and nation. 8 All inhabitants of the earth will worship the beast—all whose names have not been written in the Lamb’s book of life, the Lamb who was slain from the creation of the world." Revelations 13:5-8.

Donald Trump poses with a Bible during protests in Washington D.C. on Monday.

  7. Some "light" reading from my personal library, as a conservative response to Ms. Boebert. Feel free to visit your local library, Barnes & Noble, or Amazon……

**Science and Religion, Are They Compatible.  edited by Paul Kurtz

**Piety & Politics, the Right Wing Assault on Religious Freedom.  by the Reverend Barry Lynn

**Who Wrote the Bible (Old Testament — hint: it wasn't "god").  Richard Elliott Friedman

    **The God Delusion" Richard Dawkins.

I also recommend doing a browser inquiry for The Secular Humanist Manifesto
