GOP Targets JeffCo School Board?

  • by: Colorado Pols

We’ve previously discussed right-wing Jefferson County Board of Education member Laura Boggs, censured last December for her “erratic, disrespectful and inconsistent” behavior toward other board members–the first such action against a board member in the history of the district. From fighting against desperately needed grants to physically sneaking into a JeffCo teacher’s union meeting, Boggs’ brief term on the JeffCo school board has been lively to say the least. Boggs even actively campaigned on behalf of the “Bad 3” initiatives, last year’s Amendments 60, 61 and Proposition 101, after voting with the board to officially oppose them.

Having failed to gain traction for…whatever her agenda is from present fellow board members, it would appear that Boggs is calling for “Tea Party” backup. And some GOP big names.

Boggs is sponsoring a meeting at the Arvada Public Library on June 15th to discuss JeffCo school board elections in November (details follow). JeffCo’s school board will have two seats vacated by current members who are term-limited. According to the announcement, a “Tea Party”-sounding group, Revive Our American Republic (ROAR), is hosting this meeting.

ROAR is registered with the Secretary of State’s office as a nonprofit, with the filing agent listed as notorious GOP attorney John Zakhem. What we’re hearing about the JeffCo school board today is eerily similar to ambitions expressed by Republicans prior to the takeover of the Douglas County Board of Education in 2009. High profile elected Republicans like Sen. Ted Harvey joined in that battle, which ended in GOP “nonpartisan” victory–this year bearing fruit in the form of a controversial new voucher program funding private schools.

A voucher system to siphon resources from an already strapped–but still very proud–school district would face a much more uphill fight in Jefferson County, with much greater political consequences. Our first thought is that JeffCo surer than hell isn’t DougCo, and were it not for a heavy hitter like Zakhem involved, we would dismiss this as a fringy fool’s errand.

But given the history, maybe we’d better not be so dismissive…

  1. Launch Tea Party backed school dismantling campaigns in MY neighborhood, will they? While the ACTUAL bastions of educational choice, alternative schools and experiential learning programs, are being targeted for closure thanks to the GOP-beloved CSAP program, which measures test-taking competency rather than preparedness for college and the workforce?

Everyone welcome, huh? Let’s test the veracity of that statement.

  2. I didn’t know what I was going to spend the summer and fall defeating, and now I do! You’re damned right this is not Castle Pines. Laura Boggs, you will take my property tax dollars and give them to your Jesusland schools over my cold, dead body.

    Consider the gauntlet thrown!

  3. Eleven years ago we decided to get the hell out of the pathetic Aurora school district.  We looked at Jeffco, but decided against that since all of their school bond issues failed at that time.  We chose the Cherry Creek School District and have been happy ever since.

Don’t fund schools? Then, kiss your Teabag property values goodbye.

        1. When I think of conservative school “reform” all that comes to mind is “return to basics” – the very definition of orthodox and ossified.

          1. But that could not be further from the truth. Republicans are the champions of innovation and reform of public schools. The enemies of reform, the defenders of the ossified status quo orthodoxy, are the teacher’s unions who resist any attempt to change the way they do things, and resist any accountability for their failures.

When Democrats practically have to have a civil war to pass extremely basic teacher performance standards like SB-191, it becomes obvious to the public who is “ossified.”

        2. The so called Republican reforms may be innovative but what have been the results where the local school board implemented them. Not much has changed with the “innovative” reforms. The test scores remain the same.

Blaming the teachers union is nothing more than the same old Republican “ossified position that if we get rid of the union everything will be ok. It won’t.

What do you think about these potential reforms:

          1. Standardized tests should reflect the same level of knowledge that it takes to enter college or the university system. In other words, if we are going to “teach to the test” make it one that requires real learning. As reported on CNN within the last two weeks many states have supposedly “dumb downed” the standardized tests so they qualify for federal funds under President Bush’s No Child Left Behind Act.

          2. Require those who want to enter the teaching profession to pass a test that establishes they have the intellect to be an above average teacher.

          3. In conjunction with number two above, attracting the best and brightest to be teachers will require more funding. At this moment, the most successful K-12 education systems (e.g. China, Canada, Finland, Japan) peg their teacher salaries at the high end of their respective civil service jobs or at the level of some of the top professions (e.g. engineers).  Of course, the Republican “ossified” position is no new revenue ever, for any reason whatsoever, even, as here, where it could mean the difference between remaining a great world power or declining into a second rate nation.

Please describe the Republican “innovative” policies and the results where they have been implemented. Some specific examples are in order since your so sure they work and they certainly haven’t been blocked in every school district.  Theory isn’t enough . . . what are the reults.

Blaming the teachers union or the Democrats doesn’t get it.

  4. My daughter just finished 1st grade and I plan on her graduating from a Jeffco school, so Jeffco’s success is a big deal to me.

Regan Benson seems to subscribe to the “YOU’RE DOING IT WRONG!” school of activism. This is where you stand back and shout, “YOU’RE DOING IT WRONG! WHY ARE YOU DOING IT WRONG? STOP DOING IT WRONG!” then stop listening and refuse to help in any constructive way.

Here’s some examples from the Columbine Courier: http://www.columbinecourier.com/search/node/regan%20benson

And some examples from Mothers Against Debt: http://www.mothersagainstdebt.com/index.php?s=regan+benson

I appreciate that she has the time and resources to look into the spending habits of Jeffco Schools because I know I don’t. However I don’t approve of the way she goes about it. There are 2 reasons to ask someone “Why?”. You can ask to get an answer or you can ask to antagonize someone. Benson only seems to antagonize.

  5. Clearly some on this thread are the problem of a poor education, as is what their children are receiving in JeffCo.  Are you ok with that?

    Don’t be quick to judge!

    Here are the facts:

AT 18 YEARS OLD, JOHN QUINCY ADAMS WAS FAIRLY PROFICIENT IN LATIN, FRENCH, AND GREEK. HE HAS STUDIED ENGLISH AND FRENCH LITERATURE, MANY OF THE GREEK CLASSICS, ROMAN, ENGLISH, AND GREEK HISTORY, THE THEOREMS OF EUCLID, PLANE TRIGONOMETRY, ALGEBRA, DECIMAL FRACTIONS, GEOMETRICAL PROPORTIONS AND CONIC SECTIONS. HE WAS A LITTLE WEAK IN CALCULUS.  THERE WAS NO INTERNET OR COMPUTERS OR CALCULATORS BACK THEN.  HOW DO OUR 18 YEAR OLDS COMPARE IN STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT TODAY?

    The Problem:

    •  PARENTS HAVE LITTLE TO SAY ABOUT WHAT GOES ON AT SCHOOL AND IN THE CLASSROOM

    •  PARENTS ARE CONCERNED ABOUT CLASSROOM TEACHINGS AND CURRICULUM THAT ARE INCREASINGLY ANTI-GOD, ANTI-COUNTY, AND ANTI-MORALITY.

    •  PARENTS ARE CONCERNED THAT THERE IS TOO MUCH ANTI-AMERICANISM AND ANTI-FOUNDING FATHERS AND DISLOYALTY TO THE CONSTITUTIONAL PRINCIPLES TAUGHT IN THE SCHOOLS.

IN THE PAST, EDUCATION WAS UNDER THE DIRECTION OF PARENTS FOR IT IS THE PARENTS’ GOD-GIVEN RESPONSIBILITY AND INALIENABLE RIGHT TO RAISE THEIR CHILDREN, NOT GOVERNMENT.

Do you know how much you are paying in property tax for your child’s education?

Do you know it cost almost as much to educate your student in public school as it does in the best private school in the state?

Do you know public school graduation requirements are not meeting the minimal entry requirementes for Colorado’s own colleges?

Pouring money into the system won’t fix the problem as proven in other districts across the county.

DID YOU KNOW “NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND” IS A SCAM?  IT BRINGS MORE FEDERAL DOLLARS INTO SCHOOLS.  IF A CHILD DOES NOT FIT “IN THE BOX” THEY BECOME SPECIAL NEEDS AND SPECIAL NEED STUDENTS DRAW MORE FEDERAL DOLLARS.

DID YOU KNOW THAT ON AVERAGE ABOUT 20% OF EDUCATION DOLLARS GOES DIRECTLY TO THE STUDENTS?  MOST IS ALLOCATED TO ADMINISTRATORS, FACILITIES, AND TEACHER SALARIES.

Don’t be quick to judge and evey parent should be paying more attention.  Don’t believe what you hear.  Do your own homework…the facts are available on the JeffCo website…student proficiency scores are horrible, even in the best schools.

You are ok with this?  I know Boggs and Benson are not, and neither am I.
