Today is "Haha, we beat Barnes to the first post day."
This morning has me wondering who is going to be the champion of the Not-Trump GOP. Danielle Pletka said yesterday something I have been saying for a while now.
It is and will be the Trumplican© party until someone steps forward to lead the opposition. At this point, no single individual has claimed or been awarded the mantle of leader of the GOP, sans Trump.
The autocratic nature of Republicanism allowed Trump to hijack the party. It is that same predeliction that is hobbling the effort to fight back against the terrorist movement that is the Orange Horde.
Republicans will be ineffective in resisting the toxic presence of the Orange Destruction until they find a leader they can rally behind. Conservatives don't lead by committee…they need a hero.
Who will that be? Kinsinger? Hogan? Romney? Caitlyn Jenner?
Any bets?
Jenner’s been inconsistent on Trump, and the hardcore compensatin’ base won’t vote for a trans woman.
My bet would be on Liz Cheney- even if removed from present leadership post, she’ll survive in long run.
She would likely have the support of the Bush family, unless one of them is hot for the job… nothing from them…not that I have heard, anyway.
There's an ambitious next-gen Bush in Texas politics. He's probably at least one election away from having credible national hopes, though.
Agreed. I met him at a veterans conference in San Antonio two years ago. VERY impressive young man. He’s the head of the Texas Railroad Commission – a stepping stone to the TX governor’s mansion.
Someday, someone's gonna have to sit me down and draw me diagrams to explain Texas politics; how the various commissions, etc. work in the larger scheme of things It's just one more way Texas is like a whole 'nother country.
Read the Molly Ivins archive. Gawd, that woman died far too soon. She could explain Texas.
I want to see what happens to Cheny in 2022. I know that her opponents are quite loud right now, and she is going to lose her leadership position. But her roots run deep in Wyoming, and you can never underestimate the stupidity to rises to the top of the Trump swamp.
My question is when does Trump stop being the de facto leader of the party. He has lost the presidency, lost the Senate, and the House. By any measure, he is extremely unpopular with anyone that is not a deep red republican. And, on top of all of that, he is petty, stupid, and incompetent. When and how do they pull the plug? Do they have to wait until he dies?
As much as I distaste Trump, I hope the Republican party enthusiastically embraces him to the bitter end until its just him and the kookiest of kooks. If you just look back, he has been impeached twice, he lost the popular vote twice, he lost the Presidency, the Senate and the House, he helped ignite a deadly riot at the capitol, he had massive turnover, disorganization and criminality in his administration, and he was completely ineffective in handling Covid.
His popularity and voice are waning as he is kicked off of various platforms, and he may indeed see some jail time along with Rudy. He's a demonstrable liar, a disgusting pig, and a man with no dignity. Let the Republican party tie themselves to this anchor and let them sink together. I could be wrong, but I think it's just going to get worse and worse for the Republican party as long as they continue to kiss the ring at Mar-a-Lago.

The GOP party apparatus has been completely taken over by Trumpists.
Cheney & Romney represent the old, establishment of the Party. This "wing" or the GOP has influence with lobbying shops, pundits, think tanks, and some corporate pacs, but has basically no actual constituency of voters.
Collins, Murkowski and even McConnell are dinosaurs (if not turtles), who will not survive the next four years.
@PH: Collins and McConnell aren't up for re-election until 2026. News article recently on Yahoo revealed that the RNC concealed recent polling showing that Trump isn't polling as well now in unidentified battleground states as he was earlier this year.
Lexington's article in the May 1-7 issue of The Economist is enlightening: "In praise of the Mormon right; Utah offers a lesson in pragmatic conservatism that the Republicans badly need." In other words, Trump doesn't control the Republican party in Utah. Yes, Romney got booed at the convention, but that was about it. Governor Cox remains opposed to Trump and his grievance politics.
Also of note that in a two major candidate presidential race, Trump polled the worst of any Republican presidential candidate in Utah since Goldwater in 1964.
You're right. Five more years, and then they're done. Manchin is done also, as the Republicans will run a candidate to his left on economic issues and to his right on cultural issues. He'll be left punching right and left, and fizzing about like a released balloon.
Silver linings; let's hope so. I agree that Trump is probably more of a drag than the bluster implies. I also feel he has passed his done-by date, and his popularity will continue to decline.
The big dark cloud. The Republican Party, with or without Trump, has taken a turn toward neo-fascism – power no matter how. They will use nativism and culture wars to dominate the news cycles. Democrats will propose popular policies, but will get creamed by the Fox News bubble;
One solution that would benefit America. All the non-Trumpian Republicans who get canceled should turn around and run as third-Party or write-ins: PA, WY, AZ… I don't think it will actually happen, as they are stuck in the Republican Party of the early 2000s.
Another item to send chills up & down….. Biden won the popular vote by over 5 million votes. But, a switch of around 43,000 votes would have given Trump WI, GA, AZ, and the presidency.
And the former guy would have easily picked up those 43,000 votes if he had approved a stimulus payment of any amount in August or September, 2020.
The biggest political misstep in history.
CA Governor Gavin Newsom understands this. He’s proposing $600 stimulus checks to 2/3 of CA residents while he is in the midst of a recall election. That is political genius.

realist, the key is finding the embed code. My ipad won’t show it for some reason, but my laptop will. Find the video on youtube, click share, find the embed code, which is a big block of code, and click copy. Then go back to Pols, click the “source” button, and paste the embed code.

Sure I'm expecting a diary soon, but University of Colorado President Mark Kennedy is on his way out. The beginning of the end of an error, and Exhibit A for what happens when you give the GOP power over institutions. It appears Cheney is facing a secret ballot, per this evenings’ news. If that holds up, she might win it. Trump will do everything he can to make it a public vote. He must, if he is to rule by fear. He may be about to lose some friends.
If Trump wins this vote, he will lose so many moderates, insurrection will be his only path back to the presidency. As it is, his sway diminishes by the day. C’mon GOP…now may be your last chance to escape political oblivion.
Trump is a loser. All that bullshit about “winning” was just that…bullshit. The thing I worry about the most, I think, are his (and Putins’) operatives at the Pentagon and the DOD. He is destined to lose again, but how many people will have to suffer in order to get us there??
