If we only spent a fraction of our time building bridges to
the dummycratsour consumers that we do bloviating about our boot-strappin’-way-of-life on the prairie maybe we could make some progress? Or, we just steady the course and remain all-but-irrelevant in Colorado politics?The "just leave us alone" attitude is a losing proposition. Attitudes change across space and time. Images of chickens crammed into cages does not help create a positive image for agriculture.
Adaption is the key to survival in the long run.

Rod Pelton represents the worst of what the Eastern Plains has to offer. Every time he opines, I wonder why the hell voters picked him over the qualified and progressive Bethleen McCall.
If he really wants consumers to “respect” the meat industry, said industry needs to get real about respecting and protecting its low-paid immigrant workforce. Covid ravaged the workers and closed meat plants, while management and politicians like Pelton, Sonnenberg, and Gardner ignored it- they were mostly brown people, after all. And working conditions haven’t improved much since those outbreaks.
Consumers are cautious about meat for good reason.

1. Stop the press! Old white guy with an R after his name on the ballot wins over misunderstood younger women with a D.
2. Has the 65th ever been represented by other than an older white man?
3. He may be a jerk but he is our jerk. I am unaware of word to describe that phenomenon, but if there is one it would answer at least part of your wonder.
As to 2: be careful what you wish for. This area was once represented by Marilyn Musgrave whose many faults did not include being old and male.
Sigh.

Bethleen McCall was not a “misunderstood” younger woman running for the 65th. She was well known for her work on various boards and the community college. Her talents are now hard at work representing the hemp idustry to the NE Ag community.
And she got 23% of the vote in the general, in contrast to the previous ~ 20% “older white guys in cowboy hats” who ran as Dems in that race. Also see V’s flashback above on Marilyn Musgrave, who as far as I know never conceded, and still thinks she’s repping US CD4. Also Betsy Markey, who did a much better job of it. And Dr. Karen McCormick, who lost the 4th CD race, but now ably reps Colorado’s HD11. So yeah, women can win in that area….someday even in HD65.
Do you live in the 65th? What did you do to help Dems win in that district?
Bethlene is an amazing woman. We would have been well-served by her in the State House.
Kwtree, Marilyn represented the 65th in the House and later the Senate in the lege before she went to Congress. The district leans right politically but isn't prejudiced against women, as long as they are bat-shit crazy!

Help D win the 65th? I did the same thing I did to help a D win in all kinds of knee-jerk red districts – contributed someplace else where a D could win. Specifically last cycle were D candidates in US senate races.
The “agriculture” that sustainably husbands this planet’s land (air, water) and animals, and treats their workers well, has my utmost respect . . .
. . . The “agriculture” that treats any or all or the above as nothing more than expendable commodities, and operates their business as just another rapacious extraction industry, not at all.
Where is that first one? I want to go to that place.

This Indiana farmer is advocating for the stick approach by calling for the end to the federally subsidized crop insurance system. His point, well-taken, is that subsidized insurance is a crutch; farmers aren't proactively shifting their cropping patterns to be more resilient (and profitable sans the half-trillion dollars in farm subsidy payments paid out since 1995).
He's not wrong.

What's left unsaid is that 1) these intelligence briefings are provided for real presidents, 2) any intelligence briefings provided for Trump likely will find their way to Vladimir Putin's in-box.
