Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour, a top GOP fundraiser but also a bit of a political moron at times, sure looked like he was positioning himself to run for the Republican Presidential nomination. But as Politico reports, he’s out:
“This has been a difficult, personal decision, and I am very grateful to my family for their total support of my going forward, had that been what I decided,” Barbour said in a statement.
“A candidate for president today is embracing a ten-year commitment to an all-consuming effort, to the virtual exclusion of all else. His (or her) supporters expect and deserve no less than absolute fire in the belly from their candidate,” he added. “I cannot offer that with certainty, and total certainty is required.”

various GOP wives who have been less than thrilled by their husbands. presidential ambitions this time around and his was one of those. He maybe a blowhard who can’t help saying things he has to walk back but he’s no fool. He probably is fully aware that he has no real chance and the downside of all that scrutiny might be more than the upside of a presidential run, strictly for attention and increased clout and fame garnering purposes, is worth to him.
One fewer adult on the Repub side.
Increases Bachman’s chances.
I do love crazies.

Palin seems like a certain fail at this point, though she might be able to tough it out. Trump is booming but not necessarily in a way that’s going to win him an election. Newt is out. Mitt can’t seem to get traction and is flip-flopping around like a fish on land. T-Paw still isn’t getting a lot of respect. Huckabee says he’s out. I’m rooting for Bachmann. Barbour’s out. The rest don’t really bear any mention right now.
The GOP has three directions to choose from now. The really out there wing, represented by Palin, Trump, and Bachmann; the “meh” road, represented by Romney and Pawlenty; and the “someone not currently getting attention” route. It’s beyond my predictive abilities to say where they’ll go, but I wouldn’t rule out any of them.
“Haley Barbour is like the racist sheriff out of some 1990s Lifetime movie about the 1960s south.”
Ever since I heard that, I can’t picture anything else when looking at him.
as Boss Hogg.
I think Barbour recognized that he was a caricature of the typical old southern conservative good ole boy, which just dosen’t fly on the national scale anymore.
He was the real deal – an actual southern conservative good ole boy. And yes, that won’t fly…
