I see a story about gangs within some sheriffs depts. in LA and this morning about how you can be a citizen cop in Mesa county.

Well…after scouring the MCSO website, the "Crime Watch" program seems pretty straight forward as a community resource, it seems to include quite a bit of recruiting for deputies.
Asking the question themselves; Why choose the Mesa County Sheriffs office? Their answer is that Mesa County is a "cop-friendly place". I don't pick up anything nefarious from it, immediately, but it presents a very facile and low key way to create a cop-backed militia. You know…to take care of sensitive and non- official business.
Oathkeepers are still actively recruiting for their militias. It’s a far right hate group- its members are often members of the armed forces or of law enforcement, and well-trained in weapons and tactics.
Their basic premise is that government is the problem, all government is overreach, and their allegiance is to a post Civil War posse commitatus version of the Constitution. They see themselves as the Good Guys With Guns. Their membership overlaps with the Constitutional Sheriffs and Peace Officers group(CSPOA)
Oathkeepers used to keep open membership lists online, but since their leadership in the Capitol insurrection, their email and hosting platforms have been cut, and they have become more cautious. Steve Reams, Chad Day, Terry Maketa, and Sheriff Arpaio are some of the notable Colorado and southwest area officers.

Morgan County’s Jim Crone, and John Cooke, who was active in all kinds of recall-Polis and anti- ERPO shenanigans and lawsuits, were also “Constitutional” Shefiffs.
Chad lost his re-election in 2018. He’s now ‘citizen Chad Day’.
Interesting list…it is a little outdated I suspect. I didn't check but it lists Stan Hilkey as Mesa Co Sheriff.
I am not sure about current sheriffs' status.
It is an old list- but interesting because it shows the historic associations of Colorado sheriffs and politicians with Oathkeepers and “Constitutional” Sheriffs. Sheriff John Cooke is now State Senator John Cooke, for example Those groups were heavily involved in the Capitol insurrection.

The SPLC published a data spreadsheet of candidates for office in 2020, who were associated with right wing extremist groups. Lauren Boebert and unsuccessful HD13 candidate Nathan Foutch were on this list. So are way too many current elected officials from other states.
CSPOA and Oathkeepers no longer publish member’s names to the public. Their email and server access has been curtailed since they are now considered possible domestic terrorists.

From what I've seen, Duke, is the Mesa County program is mostly aimed at keeping political support for the sheriff and loading that pesky paperwork on volunteers.
