    1. Colorado is definitely a business-unfriendly state. And there’s no benefit to the state in being so antagonistic to business. My theory is Roxy Huber has pictures of Hick giving Jon Caldera a hug and is using that as blackmail to keep her job.

ps – I don’t think Roxy Huber hates small business, I think it’s just that she has no ability to run the department of revenue. (I’m guessing she doesn’t have the ability to run a faucet.)

    2. The story is absolutely correct based on my own experience as a CPA.  Incorrect notices, failure to process refunds, inability to reach a live person, etc.   All of it is true.  The CO Dept. of Revenue is neck and neck with the CO Division of Unemployment for the worst agency in Colorado.  Both agencies add unnecessary costs and aggravation to small businesses in this state.

My suggestion: Transfer the excess Div. of Unemployment auditors to the Dept of Revenue call center.  That would be a good start.

      1. at least not from the claimant’s point of view.  At least not if you can JUST use the web presence and not have to speak to a human.  Wait times can be excessive.

I actually think that CBMS is a much bigger computer fiasco than Unemployment.

        1. I was referring to the employer’s side of things with SUTA.  Almost all of my clients have been audited by SUTA, where virtually none of my clients have had IRS audits.  The SUTA audits never find anything and just waste time and effort by the employer.  But, there is one case that I wish I could discuss, that is a true reflection of how this is a renegade agency.  Just like the Dept of Revenue, many CPA’s and business lawyers have horror stories about SUTA.

          1. if I recall correctly, and then shoveled forward during Gov Ritter’s admin.  Gov Hick could be a hero to advocates for the poor, and to county staff, if he would take this on as a priority.  Why do I not believe that will happen? . . .

            1. Owens and his techno-czar croney. Oh, yeah, let’s run government like a business. Hire your (inept but politically compatible) friends.

              1. at the state on which I worked as a subject matter expert.  I have said for years that the first thing a state agency should do before hiring a vendor to design, test and implement new software, is to educate and train the staff who will be working with the vendor.

Agency staff need to examine their workflow, redesign that as appropriate, then learn a bunch about how the software design process works, so the vendor doesn’t cut corners and run roughshod over the people who will be using the software every day in their work.

And a critical issue: The contracts with vendors must be written in a way that allows the state to hold the vendor accountable — and the state needs to understand it is public, taxpayer funds that must be protected in the process.

                1. For a project like that they should have put together a simple version quickly (say 3 months) and had the agency staff use the prototype. Then add additional features based on what the staff said was needed most.

Do that and within a year you’ll have the agency staff demanding to switch over to the new system – and you’ll build the whole thing for a couple of million.

  1. is foolhardy and self centered. All he is concerned about is his biking. This will have giant impacts on kids going to school in the dark. Yeah, the schools could change their schedules and adopt their own time shifting. But, why burden the kids?

Many adults get up early to be at work at 7 AM or so. Darkness in the AM is something much easier for an adult to cope with than a kid.

This is nothing but putting us on the Central Time Zone. If we make a change I’d rather do away with DST. It would still be daylight until 8:45 PM in July.

    1. It shows true leadership that Sen Brophy is standing up and representing hard-working Coloradans who drop $5K+ on advanced Road bikes.

This part of the population has been silent too long in demanding our turn to have the govt bend over to our demands for daylight cycling time!

    2. We don’t need the extra daylight time in the evening.  In fact, it would be nice to have more dark, cooling off time before bed.  And it’s not as if the sun would go down at 5PM in July on standard time. There would still be plenty of outdoor recreation time in the evening.  But having that hour chopped off the front end in fall and winter would put kids out in the pitch dark and mean lots more use of artificial light.  Also more driving as more parents would drive kids who live close to school for fear of having them walk in the dark. Probably more tragic early morning accidents involving kids.   It’s stupid and wasteful. I vote for sun time.

      1. I wouldn’t like this bill because of the kids on school mornings.  But I don’t like MST all year long because the sum comes up too early in the morning in the summers and wakes me up at 5:00 am.  I like it the way it is, just fine.

          1. DST change now comes too early.  I don’t  mind sticking with the changing times spring and fall but definitely would NOT like permanent DST.

  2. For some reason he’s focusing on his education background. That a Mejia thing, or just because he doesn’t have anything else (besides MMJ and trolleys)? Seriously asking for insight…

    1. Romer has as solid a background in education as Mejia, whether you agree with everything he’s done or not. Why would he concede that issue to another candidate just because the other candidate has made it his signature issue?

        1. Romer and Mejia are ahead in the polls, so it makes sense for Romer to go after Mejia — steal some of his thunder, maybe help a weaker candidate make the runoff. And what better way than to challenge Mejia on what is generally agreed to be his strongest issue. It’s a smart move by Romer, though who knows whether it will work.

          1. That he’s chosen education as his initial salvo, doesn’t diminish his other experiences and capabilities. And RG is not a jerk about everything. Like most of us, he’s just a jerk now and then. 🙂

  3. Actually, the rich didn’t vote Tory, the Tories in Disraeli’s time were just trying to keep the power of the aristocrats from being wiped away by the power of those in Trade without Breeding or Culture. Remember Conservatives are always trying to maintain whoever is in power this generation, in power forever.

  4. I’m taking bets on how long the left continues to support Obama now that he has vindicated every single one of Bush’s foreign policies (Guantanamo, Iraq, etc.) My gut tells me they will continue to blame Bush while praising Obama… for the exact same things. Is it because he’s black? Young? Republican? The world may never know – there is no logic in a liberal’s mind.

    http://coloradopols.com/showCo

The clear implication based on this is that the R’s should embrace Obama.

The Obama tax cuts were even bigger than the Bush tax cuts.  It was the Bush tax cuts, PLUS, reduced Social Security payroll tax (11, 12), reduced withholding tax (09, 10).

But R’s like the one who posted the quote above do not embrace Obama.  Is it because he’s young? Black?

But I’ll take that bet – the R’s will not win the White House in 2012.

I still have concerns about Obama being alive through election day 2012, so I’ll be that the R nominee doesn’t win.

    1. The Repub mind is a dark and dangerous chamber. And, having no logic in my mind, I’m not qualified to play psych doctor for a mere third of the population. Who knows why they think the way they do? Maybe we don’t have to know all the answers to the universe, ours or theirs.

      1. Didn’t mean the double post.  Did mean to put an exclamation point or 12 at the end.  Computer flashed and there it was, posted twice and sadly exclamation-pointless.

  5. Not morally, of course, but economically; maybe Colorado Republicans will get a clue.

…”I don’t believe that anyone, including myself, foresaw the national and international reaction” to April’s bill, said Glenn Hamer, chief executive of the Arizona Chamber of Commerce and Industry, who said estimates of lost tourism business ranged from $15 million to $150 million. “Now we have that experience under our belts. We know these measures can cause economic damage; it’s just a matter of degree.”

  6. The Orange Man has now been in charge of the Republican’t Congress for 77 days, and after hearing the voters declare, loud and clear, that creating jobs should be their first priority….they haven’t. AT ALL.

    http://www.addictinginfo.org/2

    Can’t lead, can’t balance the budget, can’t keep their campaign promises…the RepubliCAN’T party…

        1. the wrong people.

So many legislators at the state and federal level have little interest in solving problems.  Instead, they have giant egos that need to be fed regularly (why does the original “Little Shop of Horrors” keep creeping into my mind . . .).

      1. Where the hell is Harry and the Senate? The whole Democratic Washington establishment, Obama included, has rolled over and is playing dead. In the middle of the road. On a trucking route. With no speed limit. Where the drivers are all drunk. And Smokey’s in the diner eating donuts.

Hey, Mark and Michael, turn on your CB’s. You Democrats in Washington are a bunch of ‘possums. Keep it up and you won’t just be playing…dead.
