I’ve been involved in a big argument on my favorite right-wing state senator’s facebook page about the proper role of government in taking care of people who need help (specifically health care, but it has branched out into other areas). It is very easy for me to see a zillion reasons why I believe my deity would be a member of my political party, or at least support its policies. However, there are obviously many people who believe in the same deity but belong to a different party and vigorously oppose my party’s policies.
Since we have many people here who have wildly divergent political and religious views, I thought I’d throw out the question: If your deity were here among us now, what political party would He/She/It join (or support, or find closest to His/Her/Its teachings)? And why?
I’m pretty sure mine would say, “The political system you live in is irrelevant; you need to get off your fat ass, turn off your computer, and go feed someone who is hungry, care for someone who is in need, take a sick person to the doctor (and pay for it),” etc. I’m equally sure He/She/It would whisper in my ear, “And you should continue being a Democrat, since that’s what they are all about and the Republicans keep throwing up road blocks between the poor and the help they need.”
I strongly suspect some of you would disagree … so please do so! If you don’t believe in a deity, but follow ethical and moral precepts of some sort, then I’d love to hear your answer to the same question with reference to those precepts.

Radio talker Camping, 89, spoils End Times cottage industry by announcing EOW on 5/21/11 Is that why you posted today so you could get in under the wire?
Seriously was not going to comment since it is too easy to mix up notions of a Diety with ‘support’ of that Diety via organized religion. Perhaps that is why no comments so far. American Christianity has always had a duality between Puritianism and Social Gospel. You seem to favor social gospel. So do I.
At the root of all great faiths is the commandment to take care of your neighbor. I don’t understand why anyone would be interested in religion otherwise.
Well, there is the whole what happens to your soul for eternity thing, for those who believe in that kind of thing.
to ponder that. There won’t be much else going on.
I’ve never had the slightest interest in eschatology. As a former priest said, the world will end for all of us some day. Whether it’s all at once or one at a time makes no difference. However, this guy says the world will end the day before my wedding anniversary; maybe I shouldn’t buy a cake until the 22nd.
Your mention of Puritanism reminded me of this line from the Big Bang Theory: “I don’t object to the concept of a deity, but I’m baffled by the notion of one that takes attendance.” I think (hope) that God is more interested in social justice and love than following the rules man has made up in an effort to please Him/Her/It.
I envision thinks very much like me and would not be affiliated with either party.
She would say something like, “There are many kind and thoughtful people in both parties. Unfortunately, there are more mean-spirited and short-sighted people in those parties and they do not come from a place of compassion when making their decisions. Avoid both parties; make decisions and take actions with compassion in your heart. Trust your heart because sometimes your head over thinks. Try to do something good.”
to be involved in politics
.
He actually addressed this in specific detail when He appeared to Saint George the Bush.
I can’t remember what He said; perhaps a Republican has a link ?
.
I normally don’t admire conceit, but this thing about Democrats doing God’s work by taking from me, under color of law, to redistribute to others whom God has determined are more worthy,
that’s admirable in its sweep.

.
The front page
http://www.americanconstitutio…
praises God for setting the USA above all other nations (paraphrasing.)
I’ll get the scriptural citation that conclusion is based on and post it below.
.
I disagree with your characterization of “redistribut[ing] to others whom God has determined are more worthy….” I would say to those who are more needy, not more worthy. Jesus never said one person was worth more than another, but he did say that those who have much also have a holy obligation to support those who are needy. That’s a whole different thing.
.
let’s have THEM decide who needs what.
Take such decisions out of the hands of busy folks like me.
.
could give a shit less about politics or political beliefs.
If he helps me get through today without bitching, complaining, or shooting dumb asses, he’s happy.
