Clean energy polls well, and is the right thing to do for three reasons:
1. Energy independence/national security
2. Better environment means better health and more tourism, and anyway clean energy often pays for itself.
3. Jobs
(4. Avert catastrophic climate change, although oddly this one might not poll as well, outside the base. Then again…)
Investing in good public education, and innovations to improve outcomes across the board–in good and bad schools alike–especially investments in early childhood education, polls well and is the right thing to do for three reasons:
1. It’s investment in a Democratic future. As Republicans are fond of saying, civilization is only one generation deep.
2. It pays for itself, in terms of keeping people out of prison and out of the safety net, and increasing lifetime earnings.
3. Jobs.
(4. Education is the silver bullet. Again, oddly, not sure this one will poll well, outside the base. Then again…)
Equality under the law for all Americans polls well and is the right thing to do, and here’s three reasons.
1. Every American should be equal under the law. Anything else isn’t democratic. Everyone is somebody’s daughter, sister, father, true love–and each human being deserves less than equal treatment under the law. (The well duh argument.)
2. States that are more equal attract the top talent, both individually and on the corporate scene.

(4. Would you rather this guy married your daughter?
5. Societies where women are advantaged, advance.)
Standing up to special interests polls well and is the right thing to do, and here’s three reasons:
1. It’s essential to our democratic future. If special interests own our legislators, then our legislators are not spending their time listening to us or planning for our future.
2. Subsidies to mature industries waste tax dollars that could have been left with the people or invested in education or clean energy, and thereby destroy jobs. Regulations such as licensing regulations that inhibit competition without a compelling justification (say, limiting malpractice among medical professionals, or abusive lending practices from banks) stifle economic growth, and kill jobs.
