Both the Denver Post and Denver Daily News report this morning that Stephanie O’Malley is not running for re-election as County Clerk. In her announcement she made no mention of possible future plans.
Stephanie was appointed by then-Mayor Hickenlooper in Jan. 2007 when it was an appointed position. That same month, the voters (in a VERY small turnout) voted to get rid of the Election Commission and have the County Clerk elected and the Clerk would oversee Elections (as is done in nearly all other counties). Stephanie ran for the seat in May 2007 and won.
The only other person filed to run at this moment is an employee of the Clerk’s office, Jacob Werther. However, with Stephanie’s announcement there are likely to be more to follow.

Glad you posted this Dan. I know and like Stephanie O’Malley, and I think she’s done well as Clerk. I believe she’s a reserved person, not all that comfortable in the political arena. During her one run for office, she was personally low-key, but she had a juggernaut of political machinery ready behind her (Dad and Mom). Maybe she’d just like to be out of public office.
(Dad and Mom) = Wellington & Wilma Webb
It is hard to tell what happens next. Is there are deadline for candidates to run for the office? Has it passed?
I know of one announced opponent, but that was before anyone knew that O’Malley would not be running as a secure incumbent.
That is March 9th. Tuesdsay is the first day they can be circulated.
I saw on DenverPols that Debbie Ortega moved from Council-at-Large to the Clerk’s race. Tom Downey has actually filed for the Clerk’s office.
I expect more will follow. Anyone know what Rosemary Rodriguez is up to and if she may be interested?
You can call Senator Bennet’s office and ask for her, she’ll tell you.
I’m interested in your take on the Denver Mayoral race. It’s early, but who do you think will lead the pack?
I am seeing a 5-way race right now: Romer, Hancock, Mejia, Linkhart, and Boigan. The others are pretty much just noise. I think Boigan and Mejia need to step up their game to remain viable in this 5-way. So far the attention has been mostly focussed on the other three.
I can see it easily becoming a Romer vs. anti-Romer race in which case Romer has the initial advantage because the anti-CR vote would be split up, but I doubt he, or anyone else, will get a majority in May prompting a run-off.
Then it will depend on who the two are and how the supporters of the rest of the pack align themselves.
That is my ” off-the-cuff” analysis. I actually am not too focussed on the mayor’s race. It is the County Clerk’s office I are most about.
Today, February 2, Debra Johnson, Aurora City Clerk, filed her paperwork for the Denver Clerk and Recorder race. Debra has the professional clerk experience, training and education necessary to ensure the security and integrity of the election process.
A little disclosure: I am her campaign manager.
