Boebert Asks for Permission to Continue Shtick in Congress

Lauren “Q*Bert” Boebert

Republican Lauren “Q*Bert” Boebert was elected earlier this month in CO-03 with a fairly simple strategy. She apparently sees no reason to alter that approach now that she is Congresswoman-elect Q*Bert.

As The Associated Press reports, Boebert has asked permission to bring her sidearm to the U.S. Capitol on a daily basis:

Boebert asked Capitol Police officials about carrying her weapon when she and other House freshmen taking office in January were in town recently for orientation programs, according to two congressional officials. Both people — a Democrat and a Republican — spoke on condition of anonymity to describe her request…

…A 1967 regulation says no federal or District of Columbia laws restricting firearms “shall prohibit any Member of Congress from maintaining firearms within the confines of his office” or “from transporting within Capitol grounds firearms unloaded and securely wrapped.”

Lawmakers may not bring weapons into the House chamber and other nearby areas, the regulations say, according to a letter Rep. Jared Huffman, D-Calif., wrote in 2018. Aides can carry lawmakers’ weapons for them on the Capitol complex, he wrote.

Boebert won in 2020 by virtue of being a Trump-loving Republican in a Republican-friendly Congressional district, but to get there she had to first knock off a fairly un-interesting incumbent in Rep. Scott Tipton (R-Cortez). Boebert upset Tipton largely because of a shtick that she had been honing for years: She was the plucky young mom who wrapped herself in an American flag and carried a gun on her hip everywhere she went. Boebert painted a simple caricature of herself and rode that puppy through a Republican Primary and the General Election in November.

There was not more to Boebert than this character that she created, but it was enough in 2020. Voters didn’t seem to mind that Boebert refused to debate Democrat Diane Mitsch Bush. They didn’t mind that she had no relevant experience and no real policy positions and, as a result, generally avoided media outlets not related to Fox News or Breitbart. When Boebert did talk to media outlets that were not reliably-right wing, she usually made an ass of herself. Voters in CO-03 didn’t even seem to mind that Boebert was not exactly an upstanding citizen of the district.

Keeping Boebert out of debates and away from reporters was part of the campaign strategy, and it seems that letting others speak on her behalf will be a continuing theme in Congress. The AP tried to talk to Boebert about her desire to carry a gun around Washington D.C., but were rebuffed:

Aides to Boebert, who Trump endorsed as “a fighter” who will “never bow down to the establishment in Congress,” did not make her available for an interview.

“This was a private discussion and inquiry about what the rules are, and as a result the Congresswoman-Elect won’t be going on the record,” Boebert aide Laura Carno said in an email last week.

We wouldn’t want Boebert talking to reporters, either, but it seems untenable that staff could shoo away the media and lean only on pre-approved statements for the next two years. But it worked during the election, and that seems to be the plan going forward: Give Boebert her prop gun and make sure she doesn’t have to speak for herself.

  1. Because you never know when the shit's gonna go down in one of the most safe high security facilities on the planet.  Could run into a bear, or something.

    1. How about we stop using the term Trump Loving Republican. That is not a thing. The Republican party is dead. Trumpian ideals are not Republican ideals. You can support Trump or be a real Republican but you cannot do both.

      1. How cute!

        That is 1980's, Ferris.

The Republican party you dream about is gone, long gone. No, you ain't never gonna see that party again.

Find that guy on 5th Ave, he'll tell you

  2. With QBert as an example the US House should be understandably reluctant to award CO another seat if the census results indicate that as expected.

Is she really an improvement over Tipton? That's not asking much at all.

  3. The Western Slope will not be represented the next two years, except for Joe Neguse, whose 2nd District pokes a little way into the mountains. We can also hope that Ed Perlmutter keeps us in mind occasionally.

All Calamity Jane is good for is appearances in the conservabble teevee outlets. Thank gawd she's in the minority.

      1. As I've mentioned before, watch who her key appointments are, to try for a view of how effective she might be. I'm looking at her D.C. staff director, D.C. legislative director, and in-District staff director.

  4. I wonder if she’ll uproot her family from Rifle to bring them to DC. My guess is not, especially since this is likely to be at best a two-year gig. So she’ll be commuting and probably compete with  Buck for the worst attendance/voting record in Congress.

She’ll have to forego her security gun, or leave it as an unloaded prop, rely on her staff to decode the bills for her, vote the way the KooKooKaucus says,  and smile and pose for photo ops until she can get a right wing media gig.

After coming across this little nugget on Anne Landman’s blog,
https://annelandmanblog.com/2020/10/republican-cd-3-candidate-lauren-boeberts-husband-arrested-in-04-for-indecent-exposure/#comment-367741“ , I’m thinking that perhaps Mr. Boebert isn’t the ideal single parent for four young boys. This was a year before Lauren married Jayson, by the way, while she was still a high school student.
My favorite quote from a victim of Jayson’s exposure incident:
“I know that wasn’t his thumb, because thumbs aren’t 6 inches long.”

      1. Hubs’ history as a sexual predator could stay safely in the past, except you know darn well Congresscritter Lauren Boebert’ll be jumping on the culture war bandwagon to say trans folk are a danger in restrooms, or reality-based sex ed shouldn’t be taught, or women shouldn’t have access to abortion and contraception, and Christians should be able to discriminate against LGBTQ folk at will.

When she does, her hypocrisy and personal history should be noted.

    1. Seems like he should be a registered sex offender and a DV offender and have to drag around all of the requirements that go with those honors.

If he is invited to DC society functions as Mr. QBert will he have to give advance notice of his presence?

Her little verbal clapback at Beto sure complicated her life.

Now Beto has one or two or three for her.

      1. I looked into that- he isn’t listed as a registered sex offender. He could have petitioned for it to be taken off his record 10 years after the offense, so in 2014, and if granted, it would have been removed in 2019.

The records posted by Anne Landsman seem authentic to me- but it would be good to do a deep paid court record search to corroborate the charges.

        1. It would be very, very good.

Such a strange event. Maybe it was his version of courtship.

And then she married the perv in spite of it all.

          Congressional material, not.

          1. I spent $5 on the CBI site to verify the charge and arrest info. It all corroborates what Landsman posted.

            From CBI report:

            Jayson Boebert, BD 12/06/80

Arrest date 1/28/04 Charge: Indecent exposure to minor and adults Misdemeanor. Arrest # 04-0162

Arrest 2/12/04 Arrest 04-025 Charges on 2/11/04, 3 charges in total, all misdemeanors: Charge 1: Crimes against persons, harassment Domestic Violence

Same day, two other charges of domestic violence

On 5/01/04, another arrest, #04-0759, this time on violation of restraining order and contempt of court.

And yes, Lauren married him a year later.

            1. There was some pretty animated commentary on the Landsman blog. Adding this info to that might cause a ripple in the force.

Any other plans for your new-found knowledge?

              1. I’ll write to Anne Landsman. I’ll stay alert for Qbert hypocrisy on sexual/reproductive issues and call it out when I see it.

I don’t really have a vendetta against Jayson Boebert, and in many ways I’m sympathetic to Lauren, and especially to her kids.

But now she’s going to have power to affect lives of people I care about. So I’ll push this story out there if/when she goes on a Q -fueled rant about Democratic pedophiles and child sex traffickers, or tries to legislate against trans or gay rights, or crusades against sex education in schools. Then it would be quite appropriate to point out that her husband fits the label “pedophile” , and yet she has enabled and supported him.

Some mainstream reporters follow my work. I’ve seen stuff that I dug up first, reposted as their research. That’s OK with me. What they do with the info is on them.

                  1. kwtree provides new meaning to the old saying: "people who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones."

And your sympathy for the kids is laudable. Maybe Jayson has changed his ways, but……

                    1. Whatever do you mean, CHB?

I don’t think we have met in real life. What exactly is this “glass house” you think I live in, pray tell?

    2. Forget for a minute just the sons, . . .

. . . imagine what happens when lonely ol’ Six-Shootin’ Daddy gets left alone in Rifle for an extended time with nobody but the hired help down at Fannie Oakley’s Grille?

  5. I really hope that she gets redistricted out. What would happen if we simply swapped Summit and the rest of Eagle into CO-3 and gave the eastern half of Pueblo County to CO-4? We could make up for the loss to CO-2 by returning Longmont to the district. That would net Democrats about 10,000 more votes in the CO-3. I always though Breckenridge had more in common with Aspen and Steamboat Springs than Boulder/Ft. Collins anyway. And the same with Pueblo, especially it's eastern parts that are more rural.
