In today’s Durango Herald, the GOP backs off gas rules changes. As one would expect, the Republican leadership at the State House has decided that maybe the rules aren’t going to destroy the state’s economy.
Changes that the Republicans and some industry leaders recommend include timely permitting, a moratorium on new regulations and new taxes, and replacing some of the people on the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission, which they claim was unfairly stacked by Democrats with environmentalists.”
I’m going to take it as a good sign that any revisions that are made are going to be done in an effort to reach consensus. The gas rules will be politicized again in two years, but in the meantime, we’ll see if this spirit can be duplicated for the state budget and education.

not for the ‘Pubs. Backing off on the oil and gas regs means they saw the political reality of trying to change them with a Dem Senate and governor.
But give them credit for recognizing a little reality.
and the election is over….for now.
to change much of anything now. They have already improved Ritter’s overly burdensome O&G regulations — by getting elected as the majority party in the House — problem solved.
Who knew solving problems was so freaking easy?
It’s what fixed the 2010 health care reform in DC too.
should never be found in the same sentence:
Republican Caucus..trustworthy
As Gertie says, anyone who sees this as some sort of change of heart is fooling themselves. Politics…nothing more.
The COP (Corporate Oligarchy Party) are going to be going after the folks on the COGCC. Rich Alward is their target, since it seems unlikely that Tresi Houpt will remain after her term as Garfield county commissioner expires.
As Duke said, the goal was to gain power, not to actually do something. Unless they are as stupid as a rock, a dumb rock at that, I can’t imagine that too many of these folks actually believe the crap they spin–anyone with half a brain can compare the costs of producing gas in the Piceance v. the Marcelleus; anyone with half a brain can do the comparison with other states, regionally or across the nation; anyone with half a brain can quickly find that Nat Gas remains glutted on the market with prices near an all-time low. Ironically, these apparent (but probably cynically rendered imaginary adherents to) Free-Market fundamentalism hate the free market when it actually works–increased supply drives down prices; drilling a lot might realize massive gains for shareholders, but by glutting the market it perpetuates the boom and bust realities of many western communities. Tipton said as much when the Rifle mayor said they were sick of riding the volatile commodity roller coaster–it’s just the Free Market working, our new Congressman-to-be opined; but the decline in drilling activity in Colorado: all the fault of evil Democrats.
