Front Page Guest Editor Elections Next Week

  • by: Colorado Pols

(Bumped to the top of the page again as a reminder to get those nominations submitted. – promoted by Colorado Pols)

We’d like to thank our front page guest editors for the second half of 2010, ClubTwitty and Voyageur, as well as special guest editor DavidThi808 for their valued contributions over the past few months. This is the most widely read and discussed political blog in Colorado because of our community of politically savvy readers–and our democratically elected guest editors, as we’ve said repeatedly, are the best of the best.

We will be holding an election for two new front-page guest editors next Wednesday, December 15th. The new editors will start on January 1st, and barring anything unexpected will hold their positions through June of 2011–at which time we’ll have another election. We’ll conduct one poll of nominees, and the top two finishers from that poll will win coveted front page editor spots. And as always, our current editors are automatically renominated unless they decline, in keeping with our opinion of the negative effects of term limits. Because things will likely be a little calmer in the coming off-year, we’ve decided to not make any “exceptions” for a candidate who “comes close”–two front page editors only this time.

To learn more about the privileges and expectations of our guest editors, read this post, and feel free to ask questions. We’ll be trying out some novel methods of ensuring the election is fraud-free in addition to our usual countermeasures, so we remind readers again to not bother trying. We’ll catch you, you’ll have accomplished nothing, and you’ll join a select group of banned users who serve as the butt of various running inside jokes.

Use this thread to nominate candidates, a list of which we’ll post again in a few days–you’re free to nominate yourself, of course, and a reminder that there are no restrictions on campaign spending.

      1. Will FPE candidates be asked to write a mission statement or platform for their terms as FPE?

Should a FPE be allowed to have a personal agenda?

Should a FPE be expected to focus on specific issues such as education, spending, taxes?

How would a FPE improve ColoradoPols? Yes, it does have potential.

Does a FPE have to give up being snarky for his or her term?

Or, is being snarky a requirement for a FPE?

Does a FPE have to disclose conflicts of interest and bouts of McInnis Syndrome?

How will a FPE be rewarded for reading “diaries” for six months? There has to be some kind of incentive to undergo waterboarding.

    1. Is that he would like to be FP editor. He is, after all, one of the only right wingers who consistently sticks around post-election.

In the spirit of obsessive stalkerism, I hereby nominate Laughing Boy for FPE.

          1. I just looked at ‘my comments’.  Wait – maybe this is a new beginning!  A search for new colloquialisms and ways to communicate that might open up a brand new world for me and……

            Nah.

    2. Seriously, I put forth ardy36 and Sage Sam, but I won’t say which is which or even if they fit that bill at all.  But consider one or both my nomination please.  Need to keep a West Slope guest editor…in the spirit of the Great Compromise and all.  And what about that Hugh guy?  Or is being a presidential contender verbotten?

        1. (Whoever that is? Yet another one of my sockpuppets? Damn, they are so hard to keep track of. You put them in the dryer and next thing you know, one of them has disappeared again.)

I will offer a conditional acceptance of the nomination. The ardy clan will accept nomination to FPE on the condition that he/she/they not actually be elected. If there is a risk of being elected, then I/me/we politely decline.

Hey! ardy33, you get back here this minute. If I have to stop this diary …

          Whew!

    3. Something to do with revealing how truly left-wing and wacko the site was. I think you were planning to teach us all a valuable lesson about ourselves or something.

  1. two separate elections on the same day–one for a left leaning blogger and one for a right leaning blogger. We have an overwhelming amount of lefties that blog here and our current election makes it impossible for a right wing blogger here to be a front page editor.

I’d like to see us return to the way we used to do this, which brought some balance to the front page,

    1. They are, albeit unfortunately, few and far between.

It doesn’t seem very fair to have one election with two or three candidates, and another election with 10-15.

      1. to collect all the candidates names and take it from there. This diary has only been up for a couple of hours, no?

And I can think of a few off the top of my head so let’s make this my official declaration:

        Cologeek

        Ellie

        Onebigrepublican

        Laughing Boy

Who really cares if there are 15 names or 2 in each election? These site desperately needs some balance and if we work towards that, perhaps we’ll start seeing more viewpoints from different political spectrums show up.

                    1. Honestly I don’t really care that much. If you want two elections, go for it. I just think it’s fairer to do the top two, and if you want a Republican, then get a Republican elected.

      1. And that’s my point. This will always be a left leaning site. That said, it doesn’t need to turn into an echo chamber. There are plenty of those political sites on both sides of the aisle already.

Having two completely different viewpoints on the front page can only be a good thing, unless we can’t bear to read an opinion that differs with our own.

    2. There are a few issues I have with your proposal:

      1) It’s a bit late. Optimally we’d ask whether people want the rules changed back, but then that’s another election which takes a little time.

      2) There are more than just two types of political views. There are lefties, centrists, lefty contrarians who frequently endorse conservative views (which is probably our biggest constituency), crazy right-wingers, and really crazy right-wingers. Where does a libertarian fit in? Where does someone like Ali Hasan fit?

      3) FPEs have often not written a lot of diaries (ClubTwitty and David are exceptions). Their role is more to promote other people’s diaries, and generally the ones we’ve elected have gone out of their way to promote conservatives’ diaries.

I think this was a more reasonable situation when there actually was a balance of reasonable people on both sides, but there isn’t now.

And people forget who actually proposed doing away with the left/right editor balance. It was, as I recall, Laughing Boy.

            1. Not just the reaction that doesn’t address any substantive aspect of the post, but the beating a dead horse joke that wasn’t particularly original or funny the first time.

          1. I think I was just trying to let Pols be Pols, though.  They’d already made the decision, and now I wish it were the old way again.  No biggie, though.  I’m certainly not going to lose any sleep over it.

        1. But I think both of them represent a conservative viewpoint.

The problem is, it’s becoming harder and harder to find Republicans that are willing to start a rational diary, just like it’s becoming harder and harder to find Republican elected officials who haven’t gone ’round the bend.

        2. She sure isn’t a Republican, nor is she a Democrat. She is measured and thoughtful. I hope she’ll consider it.

I also hope she won’t kill me for nominating her.

          1. Ali also a solid pick. I think that if we had a few more voices from the broad range of the right side of the spectrum, as we do from the broad range of the left, it really wouldn’t matter so much if those voices  were far right, center right. etc. as long as they are thoughtful cogent voices.

It would be nice if we could increase our diversity and make the site more welcoming to those who are neither more or less progressive nor sock puppet rightie. It would make for more discussions that really involve discussing things instead of  so much predictable me tooing or the equally predictable calling one another misguided fools.

      1. And too bad no one’s going to nominate you either.

What an egotistical comment. Methinks someone’s trying to get over his own irrelevance by projecting it elsewhere.

            1. At least that guy had ‘some good ideas.’  Whoever the FPEs are, I hope they can write a good diary.  A few random videos and a sentence of questionable value is not a diary…

          1. I will accept only if there is not an acceptable right of center nominee. People that pass muster, and whom I hereby nominate if they have not already been nominated, are:

            you,

            onebigrepublican,

            cologeek,

            marilou,

            JLD,

            No2Dems,

            Libertad

There may be a few others that I missed, apologies if I left your name out. 20th Maine might be good but I seem to recall disagreeing on some things. Ali, unfortunately, is no longer right of center. However, I think he would make for a very interesting FPE, given his lack of a fit in either party.

  2. And as always, our current editors are automatically renominated unless they decline,

I’m glad I did it but it’s time for someone else to gain the incredible power of being a front page editor. (At least I assume it has a lot of power based on the reaction of many to the vote.)

              1. It’s pretty plain and obvious that DavidThi was responding directly to the Dead Govs when he declined to be nominated. If he didn’t take positive steps to decline he would be automatically re-nominated.

That’s not from some obscure rule stashed somewhere in the COPols catacombs. No, the quote that DavidThi included in his post is from the current diary.

Let’s try not to impulsively think the worst of each other, OK? Let’s leave that to the trained professionals (they call themselves Republicans).

                1. All — David was just doing what we asked in the posting above. If you do NOT want to be automatically re-nominated (as happens with past FP Editors), you have to remove yourself from consideration.

    1. Wasn’t sure if rules had changed on that.  In which case I definitely want Voyageur back and would support Ellie, LB or Ali as well. This is a long thread I’m just now checking into so I may have missed someone else doing so but I’d like to nominate Ali.

  3. H-Man, GOP warrior, David Chestnut and High Jidette

H-Man and GOPW both owe me $50.

H-Man disappeared after election day but ya know he wants it.

GOPW returned long enough to promise to pay, though to date has not.

Chestnut clearly has too much free time.

And HJ is just the kind of ideological assininity that can make it work.

    1. But are you sure you can nominate 4?

I’m pretty sure H-Man and GOPw are typical R’s when it comes to debt. They’ll whine that it should get paid, but by anyone but them.

And I’m pretty sure that is not a word.

    2. Extremely busy home school semester starting January: Biblical Greek and Latin, Creation 427, Fox News Internship, Ptolemaic Astronomy, and I need to find a date for my senior prom in April.

        1. Oh, you must mean all those “thee”s and “thou”s and “verily”s and “wherefore”s? — because all the rest of those red-letter words in my Bible are good, old-fashioned, American english.

          1. A tea party American. But he didn’t speak English.

Neither did any of the apostles. Or anyone else.

And the King James version you probably have has nice pictures and captures the big picture.  But the English kings can kiss my ass.  we kicked mad king George outta here for good reasons.  (Mostly land and money, but those are good reasons)

Now, if you want American prophets and texts  – Joe Smith.

            1. but now you’re just playing with me.

As every tea-party American knows, you can’t be a tea-party American — and most definitely not a tea-party American savior — if you don’t speak tea-party American (or at least Alaskan).

One a personal note, if you’re really serious about this FPE gig, I suggest you give an attentive ear to one of the Pols sage political minds:

You’ve got to grow up a little bit if you want to be taken seriously politically.

(For the life of me, I don’t know why that quote hasn’t yet made it into a sig line.)

                1. No doubt I’d give you a hell of a run for the 12 year-old demographic. ;~)

(BTW I thought the red-letter/KJV comment was quite a sophisticated piece of Lutheran humor.)

      1. Don’t be slippery about it, pretending you’re just being “objective.” Say, “I believe this, and this is why this is important.” Or, “I don’t believe this, but it’s worthy of discussion.”

  4. IIRC you end up in the top 5 every time this election rolls around. And you consistently offer some of the most reasonable and insightful commentary on here.

I also would like to see some right leaning influence, but I think everyone who posts semi-regularly with conservative view points has already been nominated.

  5. If there are going to be so many nominees (my rough estimate is 20 as of this moment), we should have a runoff – say, first election to narrow down the field to, say, five or six candidates, followed by the one for the top two.

      1. It always seems to happen that we get several candidates nearly tied at the top since a lot of vote-splitting happens.

But it’s probably too late for this change because we have a million crucially important things to do on this site before the end of the year.

  6. for the right-wing editor.

    Two reasons:

    1.  Even though he’s not a Republican, he’s a fairly consistent conservative voice, as well as a representative from a major party.

    and,

    2.  He seems just about crazy enough to accept the nomination.

    1. But he’s on vacation so now is the perfect time to mess with him. He’ll return not even knowing what’s happened.

Besides, V leaves and CoPols decides to do the FPE vote?

      Hmmmmmmm….

          1. but that quote looks like an insulting parody of Steve’s old quote… His “bio” reads “I am a very interesting person interested in everything interesting.” … and Steve’s sockpuppets tended to have mythological names (Bellerophon, for example). I just don’t see him reregistering his own name and get kicked off again.

            1. and is quite happy to be self-deprecating, but reacts badly to being deprecated. Like a lot of us.

Wouldn’t surprise me if it’s him, and wouldn’t surprise me if the same guy who’s amused by David Chestnut and BSWilson and Voyageursucksass and such. (Personally I never got the fake-username joke.)

              1. But, more importantly most folks using the google to search for “BJ”, are going to be very confused, and disappointed, by BJWilson.

Let’s ban ’em both for the sake of googlers everywhere.

  7. Thank you all who have nominated me above – it’s an honor to be mentioned

That said – I still plan to be involved in Colorado politics and participate actively here, but I’m also going to be registering to vote either in California or New Mexico, sometime in the next few months – that said, I probably shouldn’t be editing here?

Also – I think OneBigRepublican would do a fine job as an FPE, bringing in a Conservative perspective, so he/she has my nomination vote

      1. I’ve noticed over the last two or so years (Obama on) that everyone I support loses.  Often horribly.

So while I think you make a great FPE, I cannot, in good conscience, support you.

        Sorry and you’re very welcome.

  8. Phoenix Rising

    Aristotle

    MADCO

    Voyageur

    Club Twitty

    For the conservative voice:

    Laughing Boy

    Cologeek

    20thMaine

(Really wish Ellie was able and/or available for nomination. She would be fantastic)

I saw my name thrown in the nominating pool. Whether it was done seriously or not, I must decline. I am excited and blessed to be busy with work and school for the next 6 months. In between therapy, of course.

Very excited to be a part of these elections and looking forward to see how our new (or re-elected) FPEs handle the responsibilities.

    Good luck all.
