We don’t want to make a habit of promoting other people’s events, but we’ll make an exception for what looks like an excellent reason to save the date a week from Wednesday:
Colorado Journalism and the 2010 Election
A panel discussion with:
Charles Ashby, Political Reporter, Grand Junction Sentinel
Curtis Hubbard, Political Editor, The Denver Post
Adam Schrager, Political Reporter, 9News, Producer/Host YOUR SHOW
Eli Stokols, Political Reporter, KDVR Fox 31 and KWGN TV
Kristen Wyatt, Reporter, Associated PressWednesday, December 8, 2 p.m.
Lawrence Street Center, Terrace Room
1380 Lawrence Street, 2nd floor
Free and open to the public
No RSVP requiredWith the Rocky Mountain News gone and journalism in the midst of major changes, did Denver media outlets provide citizens with the information needed to make informed decisions during the 2010 election? What were the journalistic triumphs and lapses during the election cycle?
Panelists will offer introductory comments and then take questions from the audience.
We’re thinking our readers will definitely have some opinions on this. Ought to be interesting.

but it won’t be interesting. Have you ever watched a panel of journalists talk about what they do? It’s like Albert Brooks in Defending Your Life.
Brooks: “Well, I did the best–”
Judge: “I know, I know. You did the best you could do.”
that’s willing to ask tough questions. Wish I was over there that day. I’d probably give it a shot.
I’ve been to forums where all the questions were pre-scripted so there was no interaction with the audience.
Live mics and unrehearsed questions are generally more entertaining even if the event organizer lose a little control over the proceedings.
1. Why won’t you disclose who leaked you the McInnis / plagiarism story?
2. Why was there little to no reporting on the Salazar / Tipton race? How did Tipton get elected without a once-over by professional reporters?
3. What do reporters and lower editors think about the Post policy about sites like CoPols posting Post stories for comment and discussion?
4. If you worked for a blog and not mainstream media, how would your coverage be different?
5. Would it be more fun for you to work in fuzzy slippers in your mom’s basement?
I’ll take a little issue with No. 2, though. While the Denver media, as usual, ignored the Third District race, it was covered pretty well by several papers, including the Durango Herald and Pueblo Chieftain. The Grand Junction Sentinel didn’t cover it worth a damn but that’s normal operating procedure. It makes me wonder why Ashby is on the panel instead of Joe Hamel.
The question I would ask the panel is: what’s the real story behind Penry’s withdrawal from the governor’s race and why aren’t you reporting it?
The 3rd CD race got terrible coverage in Grand Junction. We had no inkling that Tipton was running as strong as he was, unless you watched some of the desperate mailings that the Democrats did on behalf of Salazar.
No one from the Grand Junction media ever asked Tipton any tough questions or gave the public a thorough look at his professional and legislative background. Sad excuse for congressional race coverage from the local media.
They don’t like Salazar.
No slight intended to Charles, but Joe is one of, if not THE, best reporters on this side of the hill.
There are a couple of good ones in Aspen…but that, in reality…is a separate universe.
Just a live event w/ no webcast or live blogging? WTF Denver media, get a clue!
Print & local TV journos kissing up & backslapping on a job well done to a throng of politically active retirees is NOT compelling.
Make it tech friendly. Take it on-line. Embrace the internet, it’s your friend and your future.
The organizers of the forum apparently didn’t read political news or debate or opinion posted at websites and blogsites this election year, which means they know nothing. It’s a politics-journalism conference 1992-style.
Go live blog. People will love you and elect you FP editor.
