Trailhead Grumbling Growing

  • by: Colorado Pols

We talked a couple of weeks ago about how Colorado Democrats were generally outraising Republicans in some of the bigger legislative races. Many of those low fundraising numbers probably stem from Republicans who are waiting for outside interests – such as The Trailhead Group – to come in and spend money to help them out later.

Sen. Lew Entz is one of those underfunded Republicans who has been receiving help from Trailhead in the form of radio ads. Entz had only $13,000 on hand at the end of June, compared to $90,000 for Democratic challenger Gail Schwartz, but if Trailhead is going to be spending money on his behalf, what does he care about raising his own cash?

Well, he might want to start caring a little. The Denver Post reported that the Republican Governor’s Association put $500k into the Trailhead funds, no doubt all of it earmarked for Bob Beauprez’s campaign — which has also been outraised by Democrat Bill Ritter for several months.

“We are going to be aggressive to support Bob Beauprez and the RGA is part of our team and excited about investing,” said Alan Philp, executive director of Trailhead.

Obviously a great deal of Trailhead money is going to go toward helping Beauprez’s candidacy for governor, but where does that leave the other Republican candidates who had their hands out? Trailhead has raised a total of $757,000 thus far, and they’ve already spent a lot of money on robocalls and radio ads for a handful of local candidates. The more that Beauprez’s campaign continues to stagnate, the more likely it is that the bulk of that Trailhead money will be spent on him.

Local Republican candidates have been worried for months that the wealth would not equally be distributed in the fall, and the grumblings have been growing louder today.

  1. Trailhead is involved in local races, indirectly.  Look at the Republican candidate for HD 32 Tracey Snyder on the SOS website.  She has received over 35 $400 contributions coming out of two different offices affiliated with Alan Philps.  She outraised almost every House and Senate candidate in June in one of the strongest Democratic performing districts in the state.  Trailhead is already out there, Democrats beware.

  2. If I read this morning’s Rocy correctly, BB has some $857,000 on hand vs. about $184,000  for Ritter. The issue isn’t about who’s raised the most but who has the most. And can Ritter out raise BB enough to catch up  and keepup? Rockky’s story is here: http://www.rockymountainnews.com/drmn/elections/article/0,2808,DRMN_24736_4851970,00.html.

That Ritter leads in the polls should help his fund raising, that BB is a social issues radical should help him in some ways and hurt him in others.

I want to write a Diary piece about whether the money will make that much of a difference, but I keep being told I’ve post more than twice in 24 hours, which is my limit. Give us at least 5 or 10 diary posts, please. Unlimited would be best, of course.

    1. But the current limits are set to curb abuse.

By the way, Ritter has so little on hand because he already spent more than $600,000 on TV ad buys (it was in the news a few weeks back). It’s apples to oranges comparing their cash on hand at face value at this point in the campaign.

    2. I think BWB has $100k more cash on hand than Ritter, not $650k+.  $857k sounds suspiciously like Ricky’s COH total, not Beauprez’s.

Ritter spent something over $400k on TV ads that won’t air until the Fall.  While it doesn’t show in the COH department, it’s credit he still has in the upcoming ad campaign.  Plus, it was cheaper to buy now than it will be in the Fall – extra return on investment for Ritter.

I expect Beauprez will be doing some serious catch-up in the next cycle now that Holztman isn’t dragging his campaign down.  But he has to get better fundraisers than Ann Coulter if he wants to catch Ritter in the fundraising race.

  3. I don’t need to contribute to any Republican candidates because Trailhead will be there to take care of them.

    Makes perfect sense.

Now I can actually afford to fill up my car and maybe even take the kids to Six Flags. Whoopee! I’m free from any obligations.
