  1. Ideas for which there is no dat thaat neighbors and others are clinging to:

    – virus will just go away… disappear
    – corona infection confers immunity, like chicken pox or measles
    – retaining bases and other federal assets named for confederate generals is useful for historic memory and is not intended to remind black Americans of their unique history
    – the NFL is necessary

      2. Datum is singular, but people seldom use that form, mainly because data tends to be an aggregate of single datum points in order to be of any use. Data is always growth (or not) over time

        In schools, where "data-driven" is the new buzzword, nobody ever studies just one student on one test on one day.

        "Data" then refers to a group. You can properly refer to a group, or the group, or "the group is".

        Data on a computer is "the" data, with the assumption that you're talking about a group of bytes and bits.

         

        1. "Data" was also a reference to singular as there was only one of him on "Star Trek: The Next Generation," and subsequent movies.

  2. Not to be outdone in the violent sociopathy department, a U.S. Park Service Ranger stopped a 25-year-old Grand Junction man for speeding in Carlsbad Caverns National Park. The speeder got a bit lippy, so the ranger tried to tase him. That failed, so the ranger tried to kick the guy's ass, which also failed. At that point the ranger did what any other reasonable person would do, and pumped two rounds into the guy. The second pierced the guy's heart, killing him.

    After the speeder had been lying on the ground for several minutes, the ranger handcuffed the corpse and announced that the corpse was under arrest.

    I don't know whether the Parks Service uses an IQ cap in screening ranger applicants, but this story suggests an affirmative answer.

  3. I was surprised to read an email today about a Colorado race I'd not heard of …

    A recall election seeking to remove Lance FitzGerald from his position as Ouray County Sheriff in Colorado was approved by voters with 92.8% of the vote on June 30, 2020, according to unofficial election night results. Justin Perry (unaffiliated) defeated Ted Wolfe (R) in the election to replace FitzGerald. … The Ouray County Republican and Democratic parties created a recall committee together to lead the effort.

    Apparently, there are some things which can bring about bipartisan cooperation.

  6. Since I returned to this charmed circle from my sabbatical, I've seen Motor Anus post a few of his pathetic remarks but no signs of Powerful Pear. Is Roger still with us or did he take his Dear Leader's advice, slam some Clorox and have a bad reaction? 

  7. Haven't seen Pear and I miss him.  We shouldn't be just an echo chamber.  Unlike Moddy, Pear usually stayed in. bounds and avoided personal attack.   

    1. He did pay up on his bet to send $30 to Elizabeth Warren – I forget what my side of that bet was. Anyway, good on Roger for being a man of his word.

      I messaged Roger “Pear” on Facebook. He said that he needs to “disengage from political / virus negativity”, and asked me to say “Hi to the Polcats” for him. So there ya go.

      1. You’re middle of the road but loathe Trump.  Roger represents that 40 pct of America that thinks Trump does a good job. Or maybe he’s seen through Trump at last– and thatmaybe why he no longer hangs out here.  Whatever.  I miss him.

  8. Here's a change of pace, and an uplifting story. Those that have driven much on the NE plains have driven past the ghost town of Dearfield, a few miles east of Greeley on 34.

    Dearfield was once a thriving black town in Colorado – it had hundreds of residents, and a full cultural life. Whites were such"welcoming" neighbors, they christened the town down the road "Masters", in a not-subtle dig at the descendants of slaves.

    Just last year, Dearfield was just a few falling-down buildings, regularly plundered for their picturesque old lumber, eventually fenced off to avoid further vandalism. It was one of only two homesteading black communities in the country with any  original buildings still standing.

    Now, in a partnership between Clayton Homes and the Black America West Museum, Dearfield will be resurrected as a cultural and historic site, part of Colorado history.

    1. There is no baseball. With the advent of the "universal designated hitter", baseballs' descent into irrelevance is complete. Baseball is dead to me.

      There is only one way for Major League Baseball to repent…admit Pete Rose to the Hall of Fame. I do not plan to see another game under any circumstances until the hated DH is completely removed…but if they are finally nice to Pete, I won't hate them forever.
