UPDATE 7:15PM: Former Gov. John Hickenlooper wins the 2020 Democratic U.S. Senate primary easily as margin nears 20% with almost 500,000 votes counted.

—–

UPDATE 7:05PM: Initial counts coming in now including liberal strongholds of Denver and Boulder showing John Hickenlooper settling into a comfortable lead:

It could be a early night, folks.

UPDATE: The campaign for Sen. Cory Gardner (R-Yuma) released a “Cory Gardner Isn’t Dead Yet Probably” memo this afternoon predicting a General Election matchup against Democrat John Hickenlooper.

Click the link above to read the entire memo, which is generally very silly. Authored by Chris Hansen, Gardner’s longtime campaign guru, the purpose of the memo is to try to convince media outlets that Gardner is not already a dead man walking because Hickenlooper is “the worst senate candidate in the country” and the idea that Democrats have a voter registration advantage in Colorado is “nonsense.”

Our favorite part of the memo is this line about Gardner’s LWCF bill:

It’s a big accomplishment and one that will override more traditional partisan fault lines among the outdoors-loving electorate in the Rocky Mountain state.

We presume Gardner is talking about Colorado here — WTF is “the Rocky Mountain state”? Do they serve world-famous Colorado BBQ in the “Rocky Mountain state”?

Watch this space as the scores get settled. There are a lot of races tonight, but this is where we’ll be focusing our attention:

  1. Looking forward to seeing how Yosemite Samantha fares against milquetoast dumbass Scott Tipton.

Tonight will also tell us how far gone the Republicans of HD-48 are. Grady Nouis was filmed a Proud Boys rally yelling "nigger" at black people.

  2. With 10% reporting, CBS4 has Hick ~ 54- Romanoff 46

I’m glad to see David Ortiz doing well (66-34) in state HD38- Ortiz is a very impressive candidate. If you want to support a combat veteran in the general, assuming he keeps his lead in the primary, you might send some cash his way.

CHB, you may be glad to see Larson doing well in HD22. 56-44.

    1. The Caribou Barbie model is still quite popular among the freedom lovin', god fearing, gun totin' true Americans here in the Land of the Ute.

          1. Feels like that works in the general too

I wanted her to beat Tipton, but now I wonder if she goes full Qanon how does anyone run against that if voters don't already see it as crazy

            1. Mitsch Bush will run against Boebert by siding with public opinion; most would rather keep virus control measures such as social distancing and masks in place. (US polling)

All we have to do is keep pointing out that Polis’ measured, science and data based approach to reopening is working , compared to surrounding states that are inundated with new covid cases.

Boebert will get like 40% of the vote in the general.

              1. That might could work… if Mitsch Bush carries a gun and lets people think the Bush is from a cousin or grand nephew

Seriously- you are talking sense and logic but I think there are more than 40% of the voters who
                a) support Trump
b ) want to vote R for house and senate because they won’t vote R at that the top
                c) are not so sure Qanon is wrong
                d) know that defund the police is code for gangs of black lives matter trouble taking their way of life

I was in Douglas county uesterday when the governor announced bars are closing again – and the people’s reaction was less than cooperative

                1. CO-3 is only a +5 GOP district. It's conservative but not overwhelmingly so. COVID has definitely taken a big bite out of those important tourist dollars so they know that if the virus gets out of control, it'll only get worse. Polis has thread the needle very well by keeping the economy as open as possible but still keeping things safe. I as in Durango two weekends ago and Main Street was busy with mask-covered folks properly socially distancing. They know that the only way to go forward is to keep the virus under control in Colorado.

                  1. I wish, vertigo. Mesa, Montrose, Delta, Rio Blanco and Moffat counties have shown for years that they'll vote against their self interest in favor of wingnut ideology every time.

Mitsch Bush should set up campaign camp in Pueblo with forays to Durango, Gunnison and the ski towns.

She'll need to show a little aggression to jump on the Calamity Jane shitshow when it has its inevitable trumpian moments.

On the bright side, the reptilian state Sen. Ray Scott was thrashed in the primary for Mesa County commissioner. There goes the $95,000 salary the reptile was counting on. The guy who beat him turn out to be nuts but at least it's a fresh face.

                    1. Could Calamity Jane single-handedly fill the void left in the House by the departures/ascension of Bachman – Blackburn?  Those are some big shoes to fill.

Right now they're stuck with the Einstein-trio of  Gohmert-Gaetz-Gym Jordan.

                    2. Reply to Michael’s comment from 9:50 AM this morning (since there is no Reply button): you’ll find it hard to believe as have I. Matt Gaetz seems to get it on climate issues. He’s put out some stuff supporting work on climate change and makes it clear that he believes it is a problem, and even a human caused problem.

There is, however, no hope for “Clueless” Louie Gohmert and “Gym” Jordan.

    1. I had some good interactions with Rep. Mitsch-Busch when she was in the legislature. She’s a common sense Dem and not a “far out fire eater.” She’ll make a much better Congress person than “pistol packin’ mama.”

And, yes, it was good to see Justin Everett losing in HD 22 and Ms. Marble also losing. I had thought Ken Witt might try a comeback in that district; at least I think he lives there, but it didn’t happen. But, better Larsen than Everett.

  3. It's official, West Slope Republicans are crazy as a loon.

I stayed out of the  d primary, but will send Bush a C-note now.   Lets make this delegation 5-2!

    1. Exactly. I don't live in CD3 but I think I'll do some work on Diane's campaign – would be great (WILL be great!) for Democrats to get that District back.

  4. RMGO backed 5 candidates in the primary.  All are losing:

Vicki Marble, Rupert Parchment, Grady Nouis, Patricia Miller, and Justin Everett.

This does not bode well for Patrick Neville keeping his caucus leadership.  Hugh McKean is on the prowl for that position.

  5. Hickenlooper / Romanoff results split the difference between the two polls.

Did anyone get a video of the happy dance that Mitsch-Bush has to be doing, now that she knows she'll be up against a newbie with a gun in the general election?  Suppose she will be added to the DCCC's Red to Blue list to get some visibility and backing?

  6. Wouldn't want to be Tipton's campaign manager tonight.  Going to be tough to land another political job with this steaming turd on their resume.  Seriously?

  7. Whoa..CO-3 is going to be super competitive. Mitsch-Bush already gave Tipton his most competitive race in 2018. I think she can really do well agains Boebert. She already has tons of name recognition and money. And honestly her agriculture/environmentalism nexus is a really good fit for a lot of the district. She'll definitely get all the tourist towns and I suspect many of the agricultural regions. I guess Boebert has the oil-gas, tea party, gun-nut types, which there are probably a lot of those, but I don't think as many as we think.

    1. The psycho gun nuts types are few but loud.  They helped swing this low turnout primary.  But in the general election they are an anchor pulling their favorites into quicksand.

      1. Looking at the election results, Boebert's home county of Garfield was surprisingly competitive. She only won by 89 votes. It's almost like the people who know her best are like…no thanks. Mitsch-Bush overwhelmingly won her home county of Routt…people who know her actually like her. That says a lot right there.

        1. "almost like the people who know her best are like….no thanks"

Didn't she have a problem couple years ago, at the Garfield County Fair, when some people got sick from a meal catered by her restaurant?

          1. Good catch, CHB. 80 people got food poisoning from Shooters Grill pork sliders in 2017.

I’d bet that there are many getting sick now – from coronavirus spread. Contact tracer work is slow but inexorable- Boebert can’t evade being a superspreader venue forever.

I have a new slogan for the Shooters Grille:

”Come for the Clostridium sliders, stay for the COVID Spreaders”.

            1. A great slogan, if I remember correctly, needs to be “short, true, and memorable” (plus big bonus points if V can get jiggy with it)??? . . .

              I suggest, maybe:

Boebert’s Shooters  — howdaya’ wanna’ die?!

            2. ”Come for the Clostridium sliders, stay for the COVID Spreaders”

I like it, and it's far more genteel than, "Come for the diarrhea, stay for the Wuhan Flu."

  8. RE: the Gardner press release.  Did a swarm of murder hornets borough into Mr. Hansen’s arse?  It reads like something written in a Trump University poli-sci class; a sheet ripped from Fat Donnie’s playbook.

That style of flame-throwing might play well in wide swaths of land in CD-3/4 – unfortunately (for them) land doesn’t get to vote.
