When lawmakers adjourned in March to wait out the pandemic, Colorado’s economy was roaring and the revenue picture for our state–never far from crisis even in good times–looked a lot better. Today, the state faces the largest budget shortfalls in our lifetimes, a direct reflection of the economic disruption from the necessary measures taken to save lives at the peak of the outbreak.
Now more than ever, it’s time for Colorado to take a hard look at the tax policies that make it hard for Colorado to balance the budget even when times are good, and leave us powerless to meet needs when disaster strikes. This fall, with your help, Coloradans have the chance to make an historic change to Colorado’s tax code–a tax cut for 95% of Coloradans and a modest tax increase for the wealthy. The Fair Tax Colorado campaign to move Colorado to a progressive tax structure like a majority of states already have is working to make the ballot this November, and they need your help.
Action item #1 this week: visit our friends at Fair Tax Colorado and check out ways you can help get Initiative 271 on the ballot.

TABOR – Preventing Progress on Climate Action
COVID-19 is overwhelming Colorado’s economy, and TABOR (Tax Payer Bill of Rights) is making it worse. TABOR is an amendment which was approved by voters in1992 and limits the amount of revenue the State of Colorado can retain and spend. It has prevented progress with environmental policy in the state. Transportation funding, carbon pricing, enforcing environmental rules – are all impacted. During the panel, fiscal policy expert Carol Hedges of The Colorado Fiscal Institute will explain the far-reaching effects of the TABOR amendment. We will hear about the many ways this amendment is hindering Colorado’s progress toward growing our clean economy and providing a healthy, low-carbon future. You’ll also learn about Fair Tax Colorado (Initiative #271), which may be on the November ballot, and would be a progressive step.

Rocky Mountain Values: Mental Health Town Hall
Rocky Mountain Values, Mental Health Colorado, One Colorado and Protect Our Care have come together again to put on a another mental health town hall. Racial Justice Senate Forum
Racial injustice affects the lives of too many Coloradans. The disparities can be seen in areas like healthcare, education, economic equality, and environment – and have been present for generations. Most recently, while Latinx people make up 22 percent of Colorado’s population, they are represented in 28 percent of the state’s COVID-19 cases. And while 4 percent of Colorado’s population identifies as Black, they make up 7 percent of the state’s COVID-19 cases. Now more than ever, we need a US Senator who will fight for all of us.

Housing is a Human Right! Denver Car Protest
Now more than ever, in the midst of the deadly coronavirus pandemic, safe and secure housing is a necessity for survival. While the government funnels billions to banks and big corporations, working people have been left to fend for themselves. In Colorado an estimated 450,000 people may be facing eviction once the coronavirus lets up. Thousands more are facing the pandemic without a safe place to live, either experiencing homelessness or trapped in unsanitary and overcrowded conditions of incarceration. Join the national day of COVID-safe car protests on May 30 to demand immediate action from the government to ensure that ALL people have the safe and secure housing needed to survive this crisis!
