Everyone in Colorado is hurting as we struggle to get through the COVID-19 pandemic.
But some of our neighbors are suffering disproportionately. Right now, Colorado’s burgeoning population experiencing homelessness is facing every aspect of this crisis, from the threat of deadly disease to the stalled economy, without the most basic resources most of us are still able to take for granted. As is so often the case in times of crisis, those who have the least end up faring the very worst.
While state and local officials have worked to provide for vulnerable communities, many areas of the state still don’t have safe shelter space–or any shelter space–for people experiencing homelessness. It’s imperative that the state aggressively expand hotel room availability, especially in rural areas. Like every other emergency responder, shelter workers and volunteers need personal protective equipment to safely do their jobs. And above all, testing needs to be made available to everyone who needs one, with no barriers to equal access by marginalized communities.
Sign the petition from our friends at the Colorado Coalition for the Homeless right now: urge Gov. Polis to take further action now to protect Colorado’s most vulnerable. It’s important he get this message before it’s too late for some.
Thanks for taking action to make sure everyone in Colorado has a place to be safe during this pandemic.
