  1. Got an advocacy group's email this morning on the Trump "pull funding for testing programs" decision.

Apparently, the Trump Administration announced that they reversed their decision to pull funding last night.

Who knows HOW such a decision got made — either the original one OR the new one to rescind and return to the status qu.

Unfortunately, neither will be expanding the testing program to allow a more complete understanding of the status of the disease in the United States.  Last night's summary said there had been 1,124,195ests — or 3.39 per 1,000 in the United States.

    1.  “anybody who wants a test gets a test.”   Trump, Mar 6

This is right up there with
      – there was no coverup, there are no tapes

      – the US did not sell arms to Iran to fund the Contras

      – if you like your plan, you can keep it

      – I did not have sexual relations with that woman

  2. But soft, what stink from yonder politics falls?

It is the East, and Trump is a sewer.

    So foul of mind,

    So full of himself.

The stink that first only repelled

    now kills.

    Bow to the stink,

    Suck up to the stink

Congratulate the stink for doing a great job

or die in agony after watching your loved ones

precede you to the stinky hell.

    We must endure to November

When the scowling stink can be exorcised,

the Senate redeemed, the House held fast.

    Then, the healing can begin.

But our lives will never be the same.

Never again will we gather 75,000 strong

to celebrate in sport and worship.

Those whom the stink has not killed, he has crippled.

    Out, out dammed stink.

And let us resume our forever lessened lives.

    Trump stinks.

    Great God Almighty, Trump stinks.

And stink, the awful kind, can kill.

    1. I saw a poll that voter enthusiasm is not in our favor — more GOPers are excited about voting than Dems.  That may narrow once the fact that Biden is our candidate takes hold among supporters of other candidates.  But, it's still very concerning.

Opponents will try to demonize Biden just like they've demonized every Dem candidate (see: Hillary).  We have to resist bashing Biden and embrace the notion that a Biden Administration will be light years better than a second Trump Administration.  (I feel like I have to go wash my hands after typing "second Trump Administration".)

      #TyphoidTrump

      #WishHillaryWerePresident

      1. I do not know if we are talking about the same poll, but the CNN poll that showed GOPers with higher enthusiasm, also showed Biden beating Trump by 11%.  So, it seems like the same old story – the right-wing nuts are greatly outnumbered, but they show up to the polls. If the left and center get out the vote, Dems win easily. If not, we are all on pins and needles waiting to see if the electoral college screws Americans for the third time in 6 elections.

      2. Voter enthusiasm is extraordinarily high … but not necessarily when it comes to Biden.  The "vote blue, no matter who" crowd won't be excited by a single Democratic candidate … but they will be WILDLY excited about the prospect of defeating Trump.

        Turn out in midterm elections has often been a pretty good predictor of turnout in the following Presidential (4 year) election. Roll Call's Nathan L. Gonzales wrote "Over the past century, the average difference in turnout between a midterm and a subsequent presidential election has been 16 points. That would pin 2020 turnout at about 66 percent, setting a record."  Granted, the prediction needs to be bracketed by considerations of voting in a time of pandemic — but, as Gonzales continues;

Depressed turnout is not a given, however.

States have the opportunity to make it easier to vote. Whether it’s following Oregon’s lead with an all vote-by-mail process, making it easier to vote by mail, providing more opportunities to vote early or other measures, it’s possible to accommodate the situation, including people who will have a hard time voting in a traditional way.

Hickenlooper wrote a "vote by mail" column for Washington Post, including "Since we started mailing ballots to every eligible voter in Colorado, voter turnout in the state has increased 3.3 percent, putting our state’s voting rate among the highest in the country."

If enthusiasm for voting against Trump is paired with voting participation sustained by vote by mail, this can still be a historically large turnout.

          1. Uhh, I wonder what you think of Tom Friedman's suggestions for Biden's cabinet, including:  Mike Bloomberg, Treasury; Mitt Romney, State; Mike DeWine (R-OH), OMB.   A so-called "Team of Rivals".

Are you excited yet?  Regardless, you better realize that Biden is light years better than Trump and start promoting that message.

              1. Michael: re the article's mention of William Cohen as Clinton's defense secretary….. A little Cohen trivia here: co-author in 1985, with Gary Hart, of "The Double Man" thriller novel. I have it. Read it years ago and thought it was pretty good.

            1. Regardless, you better realize that Biden is light years better than Trump and start promoting that message.

              For reals?

Will you please stop insulting our intelligence? How long has Michael been posting here? Have you ever heard him, or any progressive for that matter, extol the glories of his majesty, Donald the Inept, as superior to ANY Democrat?

              I didn’t think so.

              1. I’ve been here since the early days of the Ritter for Governor campaign (2006).  You can find my library of right-wing diaries I’ve written since then -> here.  wink

You’re a good friend, Dukester. Have a great weekend!

  3. First Ben Kuck lining up behind der leader, now a suggestion by some Republicans *rump engage Dubya and that black man who was once a squatter in the Whitest House?  This isn’t going to go over well with our pet troll on the government dole.

Trump Keeps Talking. Some Republicans Don’t Like What They’re Hearing.

In interviews, Republican lawmakers, administration officials and members of his re-election campaign said they wanted Mr. Trump to limit his error-filled appearances at the West Wing briefings and move more aggressively to prepare for the looming recession. Some even suggested he summon a broader range of the country’s leaders, including former Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama, in an all-hands-on-deck moment to respond to the national emergency.

    1. He will never include Obama in anything. His hatred of Obama since his humiliation at the White House Correspondents Dinner has cost this nation plenty. I just can't see him working with Obama, and I don't see the Bush family wanting to have anything to do with him.

      One never knows….

      1. The Bushies have grandchildren in the wings. They will be back. Similar to the Kennedys. (Assuming the Kennedys don't kill themselves off.)

The Dumpster®'s children and grandchildren will be forever tarred with the brush of [insert worst ever metaphor here].

  4. This can’t be!

MLB might eliminate leagues, go with universal DH for 2020

“What’s more — and what’s likely to get the most discussion — would be that the DH “would likely be universally implemented.” Which, really, if you’re expanding rosters and dealing with weird, fastracked, pitcher-health-endangering baseball to begin with, is probably a good idea.”

Heresy!! Subversion!!! Bob Nightengale is a fool!

    V.  What say you?

      1. Did it never occur to the goofy motherfuckers that it could go the other way? That we might get rid of the nambiest, pambiest, mostest lamest rule, ever…in any sport?

This is a BIG issue. Calling all baseball fans!! Organize…resist!!

  5.

Don’t worry…it’s only the brown ones…well,I guess the yellow ones, too.

Trump admin looks to cut farmworker pay to help industry during pandemic: report

According to NPR, President Trump‘s new White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows has been working with Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue to consider a policy reducing pay for foreign guest workers. Those workers, on the H-2A seasonal guest-worker program, make up about 10 percent of farm laborers.

It’s not clear how the Trump administration would take the measures to reduce pay, but NPR reports that Perdue has pushed to change a specific rule that guides how farmers using the H-2A program pay their workers. The rule requires farmers to pay their laborers a wage comparative to local hourly pay laws. Under the rule, hourly pay rates range from $11.71 in Florida to $14.77 in California.

    Steven Miller…Is that you?

      1. Your guess is as good as mine, Dio. Remember when they restricted the guest worker visas and the farmers tried to get locals to work the harvest? They didn't last a day.

        1. We see it every year in ultra-red Mesa County. The fruitgrowers and sheep operations run ads for months seeking labor. The workforce centers try to recruit. No success, but that doesn't stop the anti-immigrant local yokels. Put “all those people who are on welfare'' to work, they say, never mind that most already work and the others are unable to do so by age or disability. Or both.

  6. The County jails already exploit inmate labor. My son in law’s serving a 6 month sentence for DUI (no victims, no priors) in Jeffco Jail. He gets up at 4:30 every morning to work in the kitchen. He gets gloves but no mask. Coronavirus is spreading in the facility, with one deputy positive and numerous inmates with symptoms. One doctor for a thousand patients. The attitude of administration seems to be that all inmates are lying, and anyway their lives don’t matter much since they’re poor, black or brown, or both.

For his labor, he is paid $2.00 per hour, which buys 2 packs of Ramen noodles at the commissary.

We’re trying to get him out. The elderly and physically fragile inmates are out. I’ve contacted his lawyer, judge, and legislators. But nobody gives a damn.
