Salazar pushes tax cut extension for wealthy

  • by: dmindgo

John Salazar has signed on to a letter to Pelosi and Hoyer pushing for a one year extension of all tax cuts, including those with income over $250,000.

The letter-written by Utah Rep. Jim Matheson, Illinois Rep. Melissa Bean, Virginia Rep. Glenn Nye and Michigan Rep. Gary Peters-states that after listening to economists, small businesses and families over recent weeks they are concerned that “raising any taxes right now could negatively impact economic growth.”

The CNN article More Democrats break with Obama on tax cuts does not list the individual representatives but online a found a list that included Salazar.  Markey is not on the list that I’ve seen but an additional 7 Dems have apparently signed on.

I called Salazar to let him know that I consider the deficit important, too.  If he wants to push tax cuts, he needs to offset the costs.  I am frustrated when the PAYGO rules are called on for everything but tax cuts.  If we want to keep from expanding the deficit, we need to offset.  My preference would be to see a reduced tax cut package or none at all.  What we need most right now is clarity on what will be the tax situation.  What Rep. Salazar seemingly doesn’t understand is that a clear decision is better for the economy than the indefinite wrangling that the Blue Dogs love to pursue.

      1. to try to just get past this election cycle.

The Ds that are pushing this kind of junk right now are willing to screw the country for another year (or two or three) just to save their bacon.

(The Rs that are pushing this kind of junk have always been willing to screw the country for their bacon.)

          1. feel the pain of the wealthy and powerful when it comes ot taxes.

I even heard a Republican get cheers at the recent Club for Growth event when he said how it was thos epeople making over $250,000 per year who were hiring all those people making less than $250,000 per year. What idiocy!!! Do they really believe they are hiring all these people out of their personal funds?

I guess maybe it was an audience of undocumented workers then that were doing their housecleaning and yard-work, because the rich sure aren’t spreading their personal wealth any other way!

  1. I’m listening to Ken Buck’s description of the problems:  overtax, overspend, and overregulate.

I agree on the second, the first one is way more complicated than that (is he saying deficits don’t matter?), but the third is an insult to a true Americans.  Was it over-regulation that caused the economic meltdown?  Only if you blame the whole thing on the CRA.  And that’s forgetting getting rid of Glass-Steagall (under Clinton) and the look-the-other-way policies of Bush II.  Was it over-regulation that blew the well in the Gulf?  I am going back to listen to more, but reality should be part of the equation.

Salazar is an order of magnitude closer to reality even though he tends to be difficult.

  2. that make people like me see red! Like Republican RED! This is the essence of a DINO, a ConservaDem, a Blue Dog! What the hell???

No wonder the liberal wing of the party is going nuts here. Dump them all and at least we can hold the real Republicans responsible when the chickens come home to roost again, and roost they will!

      1. You must be thinking of DavidThi808…

and it doesn’t make me any happier about it. I’ve already posted a bout the inevitability of his win. And why as a Democrat, he still helps my cause by re-electing Pelosi speaker when the Dems keep control in November.

And one last point- conservatives always harp about local control, representing their districts, blah, blah, blah. But when push comes to shove, they are often first in line to shove their view of morality down the throats of everyone else, regardless of what locals believe. Just like the DC gun control lawsuit, Medical Marijuana dispensaries, Planned Parenthood clinics, etc.

          1. but it just makes many question what’s the difference then between a Dem like Salazar and a Republican like Hank Brown for instance. I think Salazar might be more conservative.

            1. It will be most apparent in social, not fiscal, issues.  The Blue Dogs vote with the rest of the party on social issues.

If Tipton gets elected, you’ll see the difference.  Write down his votes and let us know if you see differences.

  3. most Democrats will run away from “raising” taxes. What frustrates me is that I think the President has done a very good job communicating why these tax cuts for the wealthy should expire. Unlike the HCR fight, the Republicans haven’t been able to control the messaging AND the public is on board.

There is absolutely no good argument, economically or politically, for extending tax cuts for the rich.

    1. Here go the Blue Dogs again.  We have national agreement on what and how to go forward but they have to demonstrate their power.  Politically for the Dems, this is a bad deal.  I expect Pelosi will get them to line up on the issue.  She has a lot of power and will use it.  Plus, she realizes how this affects the Dems in the upcoming election to once again appear unable to pass something.
