More Fallout from Beauprez Flip-Flop on 38

  • by: Colorado Pols

The Rocky Mountain News editorial board takes Bob Beauprez to task today for his flip-flop on support for?Amendment 38. As the News points out, why would Beauprez have ever though backing 38 would be a good idea?

Republican Bob Beauprez’s three-page explanation for why he yanked his support last week from Amendment 38 is almost as dense and detailed as the amendment itself. So permit us to offer a loose translation that involves some reading between the lines:

“Good grief! I can’t believe how many business people who by all rights ought to be in my corner as I run for governor positively hate this amendment. And if there’s one thing I fear more than the mocking phrase ‘Both Ways Bob’ that Marc Holtzman hung around my neck, it’s getting on the wrong side of my natural donor base.”…

…What surprises us is that the Republican standard bearer for governor, given the breadth of his connections, would fail to anticipate the business community’s hostility toward Amendment 38…

…What kind of reception among this state’s civic elites did Beauprez think he was going to encounter by endorsing a measure promoted by Doug Bruce, TABOR’s author, and longtime grassroots activists Dennis Polhill and Doug Campbell? Those three are not exactly known for ingratiating themselves with mainstream business and political leadership. Quite the contrary.

By endorsing Amendment 38, Beauprez appeared to be staking out a somewhat unexpected position as a grass-roots populist – and to heck with the fallout. Now he says, in effect, the endorsement was a thoughtless blunder. Any more such stumbles and Holtzman’s once implausible gibe will begin to sound prophetic.

  1. Gee. Ya think the translation offered above was written by a Ritter supporter? This is the kind of reporting that you get on CBS. (Katie Couric is a good choice to carry on in the tradition of Dan Rather).

When you look at Amendment 38 on the surface it sounds great. Make it easier for the voters to initiate legislation through the petition process. But on consideration of the consequences, this does nothing but undermine the representative form of government. This is how we ended up with the mess on our state consitution now with trying to find some way to reconciliate the effects of Gallagher, Amendment 23 and TABOR. Doug Bruce cannot get into the legislature by being elected so he is attempting to find another way to govern.

Beauprez followed the same thought process that a number of voters will have. First thinking 38 sounds great but the devil in is in the details. His mistake was to have ever supported the lefgislation but that should not stop him from correcting his course. Hopefully voters will get to the same conclusion on 38.

  2. Ah, the Rocky Mountain News editorial page… that liberal bastion.  Get Real, you need a serious dose of your own username to accuse the Rocky of liberal bias.

The problem is Both Ways Bob is a stick in a cow paddy, a Rubberstamp Bush Republican who’s overseen the largest expansion of US debt in history.  He takes stands for political expediency, not because of what he thinks.  The prodigal son of American dreams.

  3. Shoot the messenger, but we must all forgive BothWaysBob for all mistakes, especially if he wants to be our next Governor.  That darn newspaper is ruining his campaign!  Or maybe, it’s BothWaysBob that is ruining his own campaign.

  4. I get a kick out of BWB thinking the business community should support him “by all rights”.
    Feeling a little entitled?

And why is Beauprez himself emoting fear about the BWB moniker? Hasn’t the memo gone out in that campaign to quit saying Both Ways Bob?

  5. Lets face the facts.  Both Ways Bob got his name for his behavior and was deserving of it long before Holtzman or the Rocky Mountain News ever showed up.  The guy does all things based not on principles, but political expediency.

Fact is, the man’s character is severely flawed.  To say that he didn’t know what he was getting into with Douglas Bruce is nothing less than unbelieveable.  It’s known as a “One Night Stand.”  BWB got what he wanted out of Bruce.  However, he is getting more than he bargained for from the Holtzman Camp.

The RINO’s of the Republican Party are going to pay for this nonsense when November arrives.  There aren’t 35,000+ additional votes in El Paso County for BWB.

Get REal, the doctor just called and said for you to stay on your meds and stick with your therapy and you’ll recover.  What color do they paint your sky in Beauprezville?  Time to drop the Rose Colored glasses.

No one really believes that BWB didn’t understand Amendment 38.  Maybe it took BWB so long to get a grip on its contents because he had to wait until his illegal interpreter could get their Consular Metricula Card renewed from Vincent Fox.  Now that is more believable.

  6. Get Real: you’re really saying Beauprez didn’t bother to read or consider 38 before he signed on. You don’t suppose he rushed into it to look good in the primary, do you?

  7. I’m posting here for the first time, so we’ll see how it goes.  I decided a long time ago that I’m voting for Bill Ritter and Barbara O’Brien… but I’m mad as heck about how they are handling this.  Let Bob Beauprez take the inevitable slack for changing his mind, especially from Doug Bruce and fellow maniacs; but shouldn’t a responsible leader who cares about Colorado be standing up for Bob Beauprez for making the right choice on an important issue like this?  But no, let’s instead make darned sure that no politician ever changes his mind again.  Let’s have our campaign manager stand up and publically berate Beauprez for making a decision THAT WE AGREE WITH!

What is wrong with this place?

  8. Chris, assuming you’re not actually a Beauprez campaigner, why are you upset? Politics is kinda like sports.  What you’re saying – that RItter should stand up for Beauprez – is like saying that coaches should argue with referees when they blow a call against the OTHER team, even though it isn’t in their interest.

So Chris, are you a Beauprez campaigner posing as an independent voter? Or are you who you say you are?

  9. Hi Chris,

Welcome. The fact is, Both Ways has a pretty good history of changing his mind/opinion/vote about as often as most folks change their undies.

Ritter’s just calling him on what this is really about–going with whatever direction the wind is blowing. Both Ways Bobby hasn’t exactly proven himself to be a principled candidate and his decision to completely change course re: Amendment 38 sure as hell isn’t about “coming to Jesus and seeing the light.”

It’s about trying to win back the business community and fellow Republicans, who he has repeatedly alienated, starting with his weak ass stance on Referendum C last year, continuing with Republicans for Ritter (mainly business folks joining that club), his oh so timely lawsuit against his potential primary opponent and now this.

  10. MrHandy2001, I was concerned that you had spiralled down into a deep depression after Holtzman called it, glad to see that you are still around. I would reccomend that you look at the big picture, and come back into the fold.
    Best Regards,
    RkyMtnBama

  11. MrHandy2001, to use a phrase way too young for me: ROFLMAO! (“It’s known as a ‘One Night Stand.'”) Great post, even though I suspect we don’t share a few political views.

Get Real: Get real. Editorials aren’t reporting. If anything, the News was way too lenient on BWB: he doesn’t need “any more such” flip-flops to richly deserve Holtzman’s nickname.

Now, Bernie Buescher: THERE’S a “BB” Colorado can be PROUD of!

  12. Thanks TancredoWatch.  We may not agree on everything but I call em like I see em.  I never left the fold, the fold left me BAMA.  Just like all of the other Big “C” Conservatives who think the Republican Party is standing on a cliff and lacking the spine to do anything about fighting against the tide that wants it to self destruct.

I, like Abraham Lincoln, believe that the Republican Party should be a party of principles, not rhetoric and empty platitudes.  Everyone is a conservative when they are running and then they go native when elected.

Can’t blame the financial woes on the Dems, they didn’t have control of the legislature.  C and D were nothing less than Republican hacks out on a “Cover Your Ass” Campaign to hide the millions of dollars borrowed (kindler, gentler words) from the Worker Compensation, Unclaimed Property Funds, etc.  When the economy tanked, they figured out that they had screwed up.

Problem is, none of them want to own up to it.  A little bit of “HONESTY” goes a long way.  Instead, they continue to offer empty platitudes and promises as they suffer from an acute state of self-denial.

My father always asked me, “If your friends decide to jump off a bridge, are you going to join them?”  The same holds true for those who stand for nothing, and promise everything.  The WHIGS failed because they wouldn’t take a stand on slavery.  And they dissolved into the Republican and Democrat parties.  These are the moderates.  The Middle of the Roaders.  Nothing but white lies, yellow lines, and stench.

If being a member of the fold means that I give up my principles for the sake of a political party or philosophy, not sure I want to join the fold as they head over the cliff to self-destruction.  After all, leadership is about governing, not “Just Wanting to Win.”  The winners controlled things and look what we have.  A standard of living that is less than in 1975, more laws than anyone can keep track of (not to say enforce), and DEBT, DEBT, DEBT.

If your party is the majority party, but can’t get legislation passed because of the minority, who is in charge?  The majority or the minority?  If your party platform is “You don’t want the alternative, do you?” That doesn’t say much for leadership.

Heres a good analogy, I will give credit where credit is due.  James Carval uses this analogy about both parties.

A company decides to introduce a new dog food.  They conduct studies, do their market research, analyze the polling data, and investigate market share.  They spend millions preparing for the ad campaign.  However, they run into one small snag.

THE DOG WON’T EAT THE FOOD.

If either party isn’t able to get an effective message (one that is believable) to the electorate, neither will win.  Voters will stay home in record numbers.  For the Repubs, this means that any amount of voters (i.e. conservatives) that sit on their hands spells doom for the Repubs statewide.

And that is what’s at the heart of the BWB Campaign.  The dogs won’t eat the food.  Why?  Because there isn’t much.  No message, no victory in November.  No amount of money can force the horses to drink, only lead them to the watering hole.

  13. Of course I’m not a Beauprez campaigner.  If I were writing the press release for the Ritter campaign, it would look something like this:

We’re happy that Bob Beauprez changed his mond and announced his opposition to Amendment 38.  Bill Ritter has been telling people that this is a bad idea since the beginning of his campaign.  The business community has said it’s a bad idea.  Every reasonable advocacy group in this state has said it’s a bad idea.  We were puzzled why Bob Beauprez supported it.  Now Mr/ Beauprez has changed his mind, with good reason.  We’d like to take the opportunity to point out again whatg a bad idea idea it is.  Thank you.

  14. @ Chris – cool. Welcome to the blog. Hope you become one of the regular bloggers. But watch out for shills from any campaign. They do like to post campaign slogans while pretending to be just regular folks.

  15. Again RMR, I hope you understand that Mr. Handy DOES see the big picture and is thoughtful about his plan of action.

Voting R for the sake of voting R only brings about a concentration of power for the monied elite.  -They count on YOUR VOTE to keep THEM in power.

Ask yourself, why you choose to give people who don’t have a plan or a message, power for the sake of wielding raw, unmitigated power?

I hope you’ll be more thoughtful and take a “big picture” approach to your vote.  We have a chance to change the direction of this party, to have another “Regan revolution”.
