Hop on to the meeting and say “Hi”.

People chatting on computer
Polsters! Want to Have a conversation about politics and share your La Rona survival strategies….or talk about anything but politics and coronavirus? Has sheltering in place turned into climbing the walls? Want  to have a social conversation with someone you don’t live with, take for poop walks, or see in the mirror every morning?

Want to put a human face on that person whose posts you like or dislike?

Now’s your chance. Michael Bowman has agreed to host a Zoom virtual meetup for Coloradopols readers, writers, editors, administrators, lurkers, trolls, and anyone else. He can host up to 100 people at a time, and said that he’s flexible about when the meetup happens, but would prefer evenings or weekends. I care for a wannabe toddler most mornings, but other times are ok. Please respond in comments with level of interest, and best times to meet.

Logistics

You will need to decide what device to use- and then download the Zoom ap on that device. Business Insider has a how-to page, that is actually better than Zoom’s own.  You can choose to show live video of yourself, or an image or avatar. Others will hear your voice, but the label  attached to it is up to you. It will use the camera and microphone of your device. For all devices- download the ap, then click on the link to “join a meeting”.

You don’t need a Zoom account to join a meeting- but you do need the app.

  1. Thanks for posting this, Kim.  I can provide a one-tap phone number as well for those who don't have/use the Zoom app.  I can handle up to 100 so capacity shouldn't be a problem.  Evenings are good for me but happy to make it happen when we get a consensus on time/day.

  2. I participated in a Zoom dinner with a group which has been getting together regularly for more than a decade.  Conversation got a bit raucous at times, but it was less confusing than the usual expanded restaurant table when you can't hear what's happening at the other end of the table.

So yeah, a virtual meet-up would be of interest — and I don't have many competing appointments these days.  I'd suggest late afternoon or evening … simply because I'm likely to have a margarita or beer in hand, and I usually don't drink in the middle of the day.

  3. We can do this. Karen’s working from home, 9-5, using some of these apps already, so we’re all set up for it. She’s hosted a couple of happy hours for co-workers, to talk about stuff other than work. Since no one has to leave their house, maybe we’ll get a better “turnout” than the last time we got together. There are still a bunch of people I’d like to meet.

          1. Thanks so much for that donation to my retirement fund, buddy!

Your roll of toilet paper is in the mail.

PS.  These being such hard times, you’ll understand why I also had to take the shipping and handling fee from your account.  Stay safe, and I’ll keep in touch!

        1. I think that Michael as the host can mute bad actors, if any. I don’t mind hearing from some of the dissenting voices around here, who should keep it civil if they want to be heard. We’ll see how it goes.

    1. For any of you who might direct dial into the meeting:  if it asks for a password use   966347  Zoom is implementing new security protocols and I'm not sure whether they apply to this meeting or not.

If you're using the link you won't need anything else – that will bring you into the room.

      1. Thanks, Michael. Again, when you call in or click the link, there are settings which allow you to show real time video, a still image, or a generic avatar, or nothing. If you feel fancy, you can ask an 11 year old how to do a Snapchat filter and show yourself with kitty ears or as whatever.

I’ll ask folks to do a “Check in”, i.e., say who you are and how you’re doing. You can pass on that, as with anything else.

looking forward to chatting with y’all in a few minutes.

  4. I enjoyed seeing and hearing from all eight of you that zoomed on in. It was good to hear how people are coping  during this slow-motion train wreck, supporting your loved ones, creating new art and business and politics, keeping on keeping on.

Thanks all of you, and let’s do it again soon.
