As you might expect, we get a lot of press releases and media advisories here at Colorado Pols. Some of them are good, and some are not so good, but we usually spend more time on the bad press releases/media advisories than the good ones.
We’re trying to be gentler and more positive in our old age (Colorado Pols is almost 6 years old, you know), and a press release/media advisory we received yesterday caught our attention because it was pretty good — particularly for something coming from a state legislative candidate (let’s face it — many local candidates, particularly first-time candidates, have no idea what they are doing).
Take a look at the media advisory after the jump from Republican Luke Korkowski, a candidate in HD-61 (running against Independent Kathleen Curry and Democrat Roger Wilson in the district that spans roughly north-south from Glenwood Springs to Pagosa Springs) for a good example of how to send a good, useful media advisory. We don’t want to go overboard here, but like we said, it’s sometimes as interesting to point out the good stuff that drops in our inbox as it is to just laugh at the bad (okay, yes, the really bad stuff is always more fun, but you get the point)
There are a couple of things in this media advisory that we really like:
The overall effect here is that the reader comes away with the impression that Korkowski is out there working the campaign trail very hard. Whether a reporter or supporter does anything other than skim the text, that message will come through. But he also offers several chances to learn more without cramming in a bunch of text. Too much text is a killer in a media advisory, because anybody getting a bunch of emails in a day is going to be inclined to skip the ones with the most text; how many times have you decided between two books based on their size alone?
Anyway, good work Luke Korkowsi.

and am sorry she will not be returning.
Welcome to the legislature Mr. Korkowski.
I hope Curry finds a home somewhere in politics. Her expertise is not easily replaced.
I also hope Wilson loses. Not very Dem of me, but my great-aunt, who lives in the district, said that he’s actually taking personal swipes at Curry. Not only are they allegedly not true (she used to head a PoliSci department, so I tend to take her word for it even though I haven’t seen or heard what was said), it’s also pointless in a way that makes the negativity just mean spirited.
What’s the point of attacking Curry? She has to run as a write-in candidate, so mentioning her name at all only helps her cause.
