The Great Website "Buckpedal"

Another telling catch, fresh up at the Huffington Post this afternoon:

AFGHANISTAN: In the earlier version of Buck’s website, accessed on May 18, the Senate candidate said that he supports a nation-building effort in Afghanistan that will take “at least 10 years”:

  My son is a third year cadet at West Point. I’m very proud of my son’s decision to serve his country. He understands the risks involved. He also understands there is a price for freedom in this country and he’s willing to stand up and shoulder that burden. For so many of our brave men and women today, that means shouldering the burden in Iraq and Afghanistan.

   We definitely need to continue a major effort in Afghanistan. We are told this effort will take at least 10 years. It will require both military and civilian personnel to help build up the country. The generals on the ground tell us we are likely to be in Afghanistan for the long term with a difficult and complicated mission.

   As Colorado’s Senator, I will always look first to the advice of the generals, and I will strongly support the mission of our troops who are in harm’s way.

Today, his site has no reference to the long occupation of Afghanistan…

And that’s just the beginning, read the whole report by Amanda Terkel–apparently, Buck has made uncomfortable positions on a constitutional anti-abortion amendment and stem cell research disappear too! And in rather stark contrast to the old version of his immigration issue page, apparently Buck doesn’t want immigrants “forced into the shadows” now, which is a good thing since everybody agrees that illegal immigrants should be paying their taxes. It’s worth noting that these edits to Buck’s issue pages don’t necessarily mean Buck’s position has changed; he just doesn’t want to lead off with so much base-pleasing red meat anymore. Which, as we’ve been talking about ever since the primary, seems to be happening an awful lot.

In our many years of exploring the finer points of a good campaign website–usually through the lens of embarrassing failure–we’ve developed a number of helpful rules of thumb: don’t try to do it yourself, make extra-doubly super sure those are Colorado mountains, et cetera.

Add to the list: only put things you won’t regret later on your website. To remove them, especially once people are paying attention to you, only draws more attention to the, uh, “old you.”

    When you go so far right, that you are right of reality, its kinda hard to climb back off that ledge and shimmy back to the middle.

    Actually, this journalist was nice with BUCK.

    We all know he made some rather crazy (yes crazy as in, you went to law school, you are a DA and whats “unconstitutional?) almost anarchistic statements whether it was about getting rid of federal government agencies, constitutional amendments or bills passed under the current administration (PPCA healthcare act or as he puts it Obamacare.)

    Every time BashBuckPols puts up the Bash of the Day, I’m upping my Buck victory margin prediction by 1,000 votes. And doing a shot if it’s evening like it is now!

  3. He may delete but he cannot erase.  The Colorado electorate will learn of Buck’s true beliefs with a well-funded TV campaign.  It’s already started and is reaping dividends.  

    This election is about choices, in this case Bennet v. Buck.  Buck’s extreme views alienate Independents.  Moreover, Buck lacks any proposals to stimulate the economy and create jobs (other than tax cuts for the rich, of course).  Bennet’s campaign will make this crystal clear.  Buck will face a  television barrage that highlights his extreme views, lack of economic solutions, and presents Bennet’s moderate positions.  Upcoming debates will also present a stark choice.  As angry as they are about the economy, Independents will realize that their choice is between Buck who offers nothing and Bennet who offers solutions.

      ….  Btw, both argued on DP solutions which focesed on a “Balance Budget Amendment,” how about that ERA (that was our last attempt at putting in a great amendment.) before that….Jeeezz

      The guy who was asking, no begging, for the public option now thinks public spending is out of control?

      Surprised that both parties move to the middle in a General?

      Think they are trying to get elected?

      Any experience in life?

      Seen this before?

We are told the effort will take at least 10 years =/= support for a nation-building effort in Afghanistan that will take at least 10 years.  A little nuanced but it does not mean the same thing.  What he does say is that he supports continuing efforts in Afghanistan and that he would take advice from the Generals on the ground.

      Or a Country up from the ground.

      Or…

      Long term involvement. Civilian and military engagement. Build up the country.

      Nation. Building.

      Agreed with him then. Know he’s just a phony now.

      Since he likes to shoot from the hip, we probably ought to count how many toes he has left.

      It’s really getting hard to keep up with all his positions/opinions/true beliefs anymore.

      But we can count on him to have a new one every day, just ask him.

      1. It’s just satisfying to poke fun at Dems lame attempts at CYA after what we endured in recent elections. As for everything else, who knows what you’re talking about? Like I’ve been telling all the other frantic lefties on here today, lay off the weed! The world will go on and you’ll be just fine.

    But it has a picture of two sailors hoisting a US Flag. Where’s the Son? You’re willing to pimp him on the website as your entire National Defense and Veteran policy stance, why not show it?

    Somebody should get around to telling the Repub candidate that Colorado has 4 major military bases HEAVILY involved in National Defense, and 475,000 veterans.

    He might want to pull some reall issues out of his ass before Sept 14th….
