Klobuchar to Drop Out, Endorse Biden

  • by: Colorado Pols

As Politico reports, Coloradans are quickly running out of people to support in Tuesday’s Democratic Presidential Primary:

Amy Klobuchar is ending her presidential campaign and will endorse Joe Biden later on Monday, according to a campaign aide, making her the third Democrat in three days to exit the race after Biden’s big win in the South Carolina primary.

Klobuchar is dropping out just before her home state, Minnesota, votes on Super Tuesday.

Klobuchar was scheduled to hold a campaign rally in Denver this afternoon, but that event has been cancelled.

Klobuchar is the third major candidate to exit the race in the last few days, following the departure of businessman Tom Steyer and former South Bend, Indiana Mayor Pete Buttigieg.

  1. It's kind of shitty these folks didn't stay in until after Super Tuesday.  Plenty of early voting and lots of folks votes wasted without even getting the satisfaction of seeing how their candidates did.

    1. Their votes were wasted even if Buttigieg and Klobuchar had stayed in. If you don't get to 15%, you get skunked. In those races where B&K did receive delegates, they can be used for horse trading at the convention, so those were not wasted votes.

Also, don't assume all of Buttigieg, Klobuchar and Steyer support automatically goes to Biden.

      (1) Some percentage will go to each of the other remaining candidates.
      (2) Candidates just under 15% will get the biggest boost: from zilch too something.
      (3) Candidates solidly above 15% will get a little something, but they would have benefited more by B, K & S staying in and keeping Bloomberg and Warren under 15%.
      (4) There is a lane for Never Biden/Never Sanders.

      1. This isn’t about strategy.  I was excited to pop my ballot in the box the day I got it.  I bet a lot of their folks were, too.  Now…well, my candidate’s still in.

You know your campaign isn’t going anywhere before South Carolina ever happens.  Get out.  Let your folks vote for someone meaningful to them.  Ot wait it out so folks can enjoy the results of their loyalty, whatever those are.  That’s all.

  2. Biden better hope he’s become a lot of voters’ second choice.
The polls of him head to head with Bernie were never great.

I wonder if Warren got a phone call too?

    1. It isn't head to head, but Morning Consult reported a post-South Carolina poll today.

Sanders down 3 to 29%; Biden up 7 to 26%; Bloomberg down one to 17%; Warren holding stead at 11%..  Pete was down 1 to 10, Amy down 1 to 3%.  The polling said Pete's supporters split on their second choice, and the top 4 candidates would be boosted by about 2 points each.

In Super Tuesday states, "With 33 percent, Sanders leads in an average of polling from the 14 Super Tuesday states, while Biden saw a 7-point boost, to 24 percent, following his South Carolina victory. Bloomberg, who’s staked his campaign on victories in Tuesday’s contests, is backed by 16 percent of Super Tuesday voters, down 4 points from the previous polling. "

      1. Is that "all Super Tuesday" voters?

Or some kind of delegate projection?

Imagine the responses 'boosting' Biden –
Before SC: I am voting (not Biden)
After SC: I am voting Biden

        What changed?

        1. Sorry … yes, polling from the 14 states holding SuperTuesday primaries, polling people who self identify as registered Democrats or eligible for the state's Democratic primary.  Not assessed with any sort of "likely" voter screen.  Read all about it…

  3. 3rd or 4th place finish, or Veep? Not really a tough call at all. Big question is: did Klobuchar beat out Buttigieg in time to get the nod?

    1. Neither shore up a Biden nomination.
A 2020 Biden (or Sanders) veep will be seen as the 2024 frontrunner. Neither were exciting enough this time – but yhey will next time….
