  1. "… Democrats have to do something extraordinary — forge a national unity ticket the likes of which they have never forged before. "

    https://www.nytimes.com/2020/02/25/opinion/democratic-primary-candidates.html

    LOL

He is talking about "winning." The sooner he figures out there are higher priorities, the sooner he can stop writing farcical editorials.

If Sanders is the nominee,  is there any unity that can coexist and allow the kind of unity that Friedman is describing? But what about all the so satisfying Bernie bashing? How does that fit into unity?

    4More! 4More!
I am so certain that in four years we can get a much better nominee who is sure to be unifying and victorious.

    1. Well, we can kiss FL goodbye after Sanders continues to double down on his praise for Castro, including at last night's CNN town hall.  FL Democratic congressmen are apoplectic about this and are furiously trying to disassociate themselves from Sanders.

But, that's okay.  We didn't need FL to defeat Trump.  After all, we have the kindergarten level response to everything:  Vote D.

        1. We have a golden opportunity in florida, where 1.4 million ex felons have regained right to vote.  A racist legal syst em means most are black.  My hope is that bloomberg will spend $1 billion to register them .  A plurality of, say, 300,000 dems could result making florida a blue wall state.

      1. Cuban-American voters are not monolithic in their hatred of Castro. There are generational divides. Older folks who fled Cuba are mostly Republican. 18-35 year olds are mostly Independent /unaffiliated, and Democrats. Per the Sun Sentinel, Sanders’ defense of one aspect of the Communist regime – the literacy movement- is not necessarily the kiss of death.

        https://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/politics/fl-ne-cuban-american-poll-20190131-story.html

Anyway, forget Castro. The existential threats to Floridians are climate change and cuts to Medicare.

Florida will also shade bluer because ex-felons can now vote. The GOP tried to suppress the vote by requiring felons to pay back every fee and restitution before voting, but lost the appeal. The court ruled that you can’t deny the right to vote if the voter is poor.

        1. You are correct that younger voters are not obsessed with Cuba and Communism. But the problem with that is that older voters always vote while younger voters are haphazard.

          1. I’d bet real money that Bernie, Buttigieg, Warren, and  Bloomberg (what is it with the B list candidates) have had staff on the ground for weeks, and Steyer has always spent big for Dems in Florida. They’ll all be doing GOTV for their preferred candidates.

The effort to keep Sanders off the March 17 primary ballot will fail, and the 40% independents will be more motivated to make their votes count.

So yes, older voters are dependable, but  younger voters have been showing up strongly across the country. I’m good with Elizabeth Warren capitalizing on Bernie’s weakness in Florida, though, and I hope  she gets the benefit of the youth wave.

      2. Kindergarten level? Your concern is appreciated, genuine or otherwise, but your condescension is not.

This elementary approach was used by the OD to get to and transform the government. T***ps’ message was simple. Hate anyone and everyone you please. After that, it’s just tactics.

Yes. Unity is found in simple expressions of hate…or in simple expressions of determination to right a great wrong and save our democratic republic from descending into despotism.

Vote D. Or get your fucking MAGA hat…and get down on your knees to pay homage to your new king. You choose.

    2. Let’s not despair yet Matt.  Maybe if all sides agree to stop demonizing the other candidate, we might be able to forge something.  What’s really peeves me is that Dems. have had a perfect opportunity every month to convict Trump in public with their debates and they prefer to use their time to mount glorious food fights with each other.  If they really wanted a unity ticket, the different campaigns would be coordinating with each other with the same precision as the House Impeachment managers to present some aspect of Trump’s awfulness on the topics they are debating.  Instead we get Warren ratting out Bloomberg for his memos and spewing her grievance in public when they should be closely coordinating their attacks on Trump.  On top of everything else Sanders is a loner who hates the Democratic Party with a decades long passion and has a fanatical obsession with himself and you have the ingredients for no cooperation at all from him.  It sucks but what can we do except agree between ourselves that we’ll vote our conscience in the primary and vote Trump out of office in the General.  Best we can do.

      1. I don’t understand why the focus hasn’t been and isn’t now on Trump
        I understand but I don’t.
OTOH- maybe it’s all just vetting – so in the general there there is nothing new.

Except maybe a tape of someone shouting about grabbing women by the pu**y.
Or a campaign meeting with a foreign agent regarding dirt on an opponent.
Or some other pointless baloney no one cares about.

        ABT

        1. Correct me if I’m wrong but Sanders registered as a Democrat for the first time ever in 2015 right before he campaigned for the Democratic Presidential nomination and then changed his affiliation back to an Independent in 2016 and ran as an Independent in his 2018 Senate campaign and then changed his party affiliation in 2019 back to be a Democrat in time to run for the 2020 Democratic Presidential nomination.  Am I missing something here about Sander’s loyalty to the Democratic Party?

  2. Tourist is a synonym for idiot.

Italian hikers rescued in Alaska after trek to 'Into the Wild' bus

Hiking to a place where a Coloradan died in the wilderness? That is a special kind of arrogantly stupid. "Oh sure, he died out there, but I've just bought a new coat so I'll be fine walking out there. How hard could it be?" If there was any kind of useful takeaway from the book and movie it should be: DON'T GO INTO A SURVIVAL SITUATION WITH NO EXPERIENCE.

  3. Context for the Nevada Caucus:

    Democratic Party celebratory release included:

    Here’s a by-the-numbers look:

    • Roughly 105,000 Nevadans total participated in their precinct caucus
    • Nearly 75,000 turned out during the historic four days of in-person early voting
    • 30,000 turned out on Caucus Day
    • Total turnout was more than 21,000 higher than in 2016
    • 35% of Nevadans who caucused were non-white
    • A majority of Nevadans who caucused were first-time caucus-goers

The turnout was almost as good as 2008 — which had ~108,000 turnout. Of course, 2008 did not have “early voting.”  And since 2008, the voting age population has gone up 25%.  Democratic party total registrations have gone up 37%.  Democratic active registrations have gone up almost 50%.

The big surge since 2016?  84,000 to 105,000, or almost 25%.  Voting age population went up 8%.  Total Democratic registrations are up 19%.  Active registrations are up 29%.

So the big surge of enthusiasm looks a bit more like a ripple to me.
