Romanoff Posts Awful Q4 Fundraising Numbers

Andrew Romanoff

Former House Speaker Andrew Romanoff, one of many candidates seeking the Democratic U.S. Senate nomination in 2020, filed his Q4 2019 fundraising report this afternoon…

It’s not good.

Romanoff reported raising about $313,000 in the last three months of 2019, leaving his campaign with roughly $686,000 cash on hand to start 2020. He also reported spending about $352,000 in Q4, which puts his burn rate somewhere south of terrible and well beyond anything sustainable.

These numbers would be fine if Romanoff were a candidate for Congress, but they are catastrophic for someone seeking a U.S. Senate seat in what is expected to be one of the most competitive races in the country in November. Here’s how Romanoff’s numbers compare to some of the other fundraising reports from the last quarter:

Romanoff can probably list a number of reasons as to why his fundraising has been so poor, but it doesn’t really matter why he is having trouble raising money. In 2020, you cannot win a U.S. Senate seat with a couple hundred thousand dollars.

Democratic frontrunner John Hickenlooper is putting together the necessary resources to win a tough U.S. Senate race after joining the field in late August. Romanoff has been a candidate for twice as long but has raised only about one-fifth of what Hickenlooper has reported.

Tomorrow is the first day of February in an Election Year. Romanoff is out of time.

  1. Hickenlooper is the Hillary Clinton of this race. The party favors him over the choice of the base and pushes them out of the way. Then the party favorite goes on to lose.

Man, Nutlid, you're totally giving #coverupcory a big sloppy kiss of death today.

    2. Except …. Hillary Clinton didn't lose in Colorado.

      Perhaps you can remember:

      Clinton 1,338,870 (48.16%)

      the current *resident 1,202,484 (43.25%).

If my trusty calculator is right, that is a 136,386 vote (or 4.91%) margin suggesting being the "Hillary Clinton" of the race isn't all negative here in Colorado.

  2. Although one can not ignore that Romanoff doesn't take PAC money, and that the big bad O&G polluters aren't going to belly up to the bar for one who is calling them to account.

Also not surprising when the DSCC put its thumb on the scale and has been encouraging wealthy donors across the country to send money to Hick.  I will never again donate to DSCC, DNC or DCCC. During the impeachment hearings, I look at Chuck Shumer and wish the Dems really had a better leader with more dedication to the country and less to his own party power.

They should keep their dirty mitts out of local politics. Let us in Colorado decide!

Have you seen the ads that CRED is running now about what great climate citizens they are?  It's stomach crunching to see them.

    1. “Let us in Colorado decide…..”  Hate to break it to you, dude. But the far right wing, dark money, PACs that will pump tons of money into Colorado, to prop up Gardner, don’t really care what you think. Nor do the TV stations, and other media, that will rake in the money for all those negative ads.

If you truly want Gardner out, then go with the best way to make it happen. Right now, Romanoff doesn’t appear to have what it takes.

      1. Hate to break it to you CHB, but Hick created his own negative ads when he was asked, pre-Big thumbed DSCC, if he wanted to run for Senate. Take a look at Hick’s self-assessment for the job – then explain why Gardner won’t be running this on a loop if Hick is his opponent.

        1. And I’m sure hick’s modesty explains why you swing naked from the chandelier while playing “Ride of the Valkyries” on your kazoo and composing the 43 negative-mails a day you send off against him.

Christ on a pogo stick, girl, get a grip on yourself!

          1. As usual, Venezoso, all sexist personal attack, zero political substance. And butting in to a post addressed specifically to CHB.

CHB, did Hick create that ad with his own words, or didn’t he?

        2. explain why Gardner won’t be running this on a loop if Hick is his opponent.

Well … I think we're far past the "if" stage. It's essentially a coronation at this point.

But yes, here's hoping Hick is into buttplay, because the Gardner campaign will be ramming that up Hick's ass all day, every day until the voting's officially over. Hick won't have a good answer (because there isn't one), but hopefully his campaign team will come up with a passably acceptable answer.

          1. When all you’ve got is just one all-you’ve-got, then . . .

. . . Gardner’s going down his own, personal Udallic campaign rut.

Neither one of these two can honestly run on their record.  It’s gonna’ be a long, long well-funded campaign of lies and mudslinging and dark-money/PAC antics . . .

. . . Basically, everything that you’ve come to expect in the way that America does politics, circa 2020 . . .

  3. This is the problem with nominating Romanoff. If he were to be the candidate, the national party would need to divert money away from Iowa, North Carolina, Arizona and Maine to spend in Colorado.

At least Hick doesn't sap resources that need to go to other states.

    1. Wouldn’t include Arizona on that list.  Kelly is raking in the dough.  Far surpasses McSally (and Hickenlooper for that matter).

Alas…the party will kick in tons of $$$ in Colorado, regardless of who is the nominee.

It should still be a Colorado vote. I don’t care for big party control in Trump’s administration or in the Democrats either. I’m a PCP and volunteer on lots of campaigns…and I like to think that we are the party that cares about the grass roots, about individuals. But when the BIG DOGS who don’t even live in this state or care about our environment to come in controlling things, it makes me doubt my commitment to the Democratic party. It is our state, let Coloradans decide.

      1. Anyone who took part in the 2016 caucuses saw what happened.

I walked away from the Dem party establishment because they lost their hearing. They are not listening still. Perhaps they never will.
