Former Gov. John Hickenlooper

Democrat John Hickenlooper released some jaw-dropping fundraising numbers today in the race for U.S. Senate, with $2.8 million raised in the last three months of 2019.

According to a press release:

Ninety-three percent of contributions the campaign received were $200 or less, and the average grassroots contribution was $26.

This quarterly total sets a record for Senate campaigns in Colorado in the off year. In 2019, Hickenlooper received contributions from each of the state’s 64 counties and $0 from corporate PACs.

Hickenlooper for Colorado heads into the election year with $3.2 million cash on hand.

Hickenlooper’s $2.8 million quarter in Q4 (2019) is easily the best quarterly fundraising period for an off-year election in Colorado — particularly for a non-incumbent candidate. Senator Cory Gardner (R-Yuma) raised $2.4 million in Q3 last year with the power of incumbency and a Republican Senate Majority in his favor.

Hickenlooper’s Q4 bests his initial fundraising haul of $2.1 million in Q3, which itself was more than four times the amount raised by his closest Democratic competitor (Andrew Romanoff).

We’re still waiting to see what Gardner raised in Q4. For comparison’s sake, Arizona Republican Sen. Martha McSally raised more than $4 million in Q4 but still trailed Democratic challenger Mark Kelly, who hauled in an incredible $6.3 million.

  My guess is that they consider <$200 to be "grassroots", given that they use that directly above. It excludes the lager contributions. Of course, the regular numbers like % from in-state donors, total donor count, % from grassroots donations would have been nice.

    “Thank you to each and every one of the grassroots donors who stepped up to support our campaign,” said Hickenlooper. “As we head into the election year, these resources will help us to travel across the state and get out our message of bringing change to Washington and bringing people together to actually get things done on the issues that Coloradans care about.”
    
    Contributors to Hickenlooper’s campaign this quarter include 3 brewers, 160 teachers, 62 nurses, 10 farmers, 3 ranchers, 6 firefighters, a cheesemaker, a tango teacher, and a babysitter.

So, if Hickenlooper was raking in that much cash, what the heck was the blizzard of emails in the last week of the year, begging for more donations? On January 2, I got the last in the series … "my team let me know that we reached our $500,000 FEC goal"

If Hick has $3.2 million on hand at the end of the year, I wish a bit of it would pay for a poll that could be publicly released … and perhaps a bit of change could be dropped into a "common campaign" fund to register voters and get ready to GOTV in the 3 Republican Representatives' districts.

  Campaigns have changed. Hick, like Michael Bloomberg, will rely on overwhelming amounts of money. At least Michael Bloomberg doesn’t pretend he has grassroots support.
  
  Hick will always have a degree of popular support for the same reason Denver fell in love with Klondike and Snow. He is just soooo adorable.
  
  Will he be substantially different as senator from Bloomberg as president, if elected? Not really…except that Bloomberg doesn’t get his job description from the API.
